LOVE THIS ARTICLE proving once again how much Hong sisters stole from wuxia&xianxia without due credits ππ»
Ehhh... this editorial is never intended to invoke cultural appropriation. It is only meant to introduce cdramas to those who remain skeptical of cdramas and have stuck with kdramas. I also found Harry Potter moments in AOS, and frankly, resemblance of the puppets in TU to the zombies in Kingdom and Train to Busan..
In due respect to the Last Empress, this is my one and only comment to just clarify.
@Authors, good job! :)@readers & commenters: this is definitely a recommendation, not a "let's fight over who's…
Thank you and you are so right - it is a recommendation to introduce C-dramas to those who remain skeptical of C-dramas and have stuck with K-dramas. And certainly it works both ways for those who have watched TU to also watch AOS! Both dramas have their own strengths and treats for us viewers :)
As someone who watched both of these series, they definitely do feel similar in some aspects. personally I loved…
I personally prefer the TU drama. For me, the core of the story is not on the romance between the leads, but the depiction of the ugliness of society and the struggles to uphold justice. Censorship helps to re-focus on the main plot and the powerful messages on society norms, good vs evil, weak vs strong, and transcends the novel into a critical production.
I watch both K dramas and C dramas and I have to agree that Chinese historical/costume dramas are a hidden gem…
My sentiments too and that each has their own strengths and more choices for us! :) I enjoyed the wuxia and royal politics of ancient costume c-dramas and the plot twists in modern k-thrillers :)
The relationship focus for The Untamed is that of found-family and deep friendship. The protagonist has complex dynamics with his found family and a friend-enemy relationship with his found brother Jiang Cheng and Lan Wang Ji (peer from another clan).
Any recommendation that is Korean ? ... doesn't seem like there is ?
You can check out The Pop Timesβ Top 25 Shows Like Alchemy Of Souls Every K-Drama Fan Will Love. There's a list of 24 Kdramas that you can pick from. But i would really recommend you TU if you have enjoyed AoS, especially since you have yet to watch a Cdrama..
I can't help but think that this article is going to have the unintended effect of reigniting the "cultural appropriation"…
No, that is certainly not and never the intent of this editorial. It is only meant to introduce cdramas to those who remain skeptical of C-dramas and have stuck with K-dramas.
Why do I think the untamed is bl? After reading some parts of this article
Don't worry, really!! While this drama is adapted from a bl novel, the leads are portrayed as soulmates in the drama, and the "soul" of this drama is not on their relationship, but the hypocrisy of society and the ordeals the protagonist face going against society, practising unorthodox cultivation to fight evil and help the weak. And I watched TU, with zero knowledge of the novel, with both my parents, and none of us are fond of bl.
Ah, here we go again π. A clear stab at AoS by a still butthurt cdrama fan. Is this to start another flame…
No, it is not a stab at AoS, neither am i a butthurt cdrama fan, nor is this to start another flame or to incite. It is only meant to introduce cdramas to those "who remain skeptical of C-dramas and have stuck with K-dramas", as indicated in the Prelude.
I don't agree that cdramas are too shoddily made - the cdramas i have watched over the years, particularly the ancient costume cdramas, never feel shoddily made. While cdramas usually have many episodes, each episode is only 45 minutes (and 40 minutes less the opening and closing credits), compared to a typical 60 minutes kdrama episode.
Thanks all for your active participation! I missed the 1k mark, but managed to record down the results at 1004 voters. Will based the article on the 1004 votes. You can still continue to vote though as it will count towards the 1 year review. Or do your own comparison when the article is published.
