I had fun reminiscing the times watching dramas with my parents as well while penning this article! Have you watched…
Yea, dads are usually more picky, and anti-hero vigilante justice, wuxia and action dramas which i enjoy happen to click with my dad :) Maybe you can give these a try

This is based on MDL users' ratings, right? it's not based on research from external sources like Nielsen ratings…
Thank you and yea, it's a simple comparison based on the Top 10 ranked/popular dramas on MDL for each decade. The 2000s MDL popular chart has been dominated by kdramas, taking 9 out of 10 spots, and 14 out of 20 spots. Meteor Garden is currently #48 on the 2000s' popular chart - you can click the title of each table to view the current list.

Thanks for this throwback! I've seen all those kdramas and some 90s jdoramas on tv back then. I'm actually re-watching…
same here - still trying to hunt down some j-oldies to rewatch so that i can log them here :)

Great article! I love how you have compiled the dramas from all the decades since the 80s. I have pretty much…
Thank you! What is/are your faves in the 80s and 90s that you will highly recommend?

Great article, I would have seen a couple of other mentions (totally personal opinion but hey, that's what comments…
Thank you! Jdramas need to be more accessible so that more can enjoy the good works. And you are so right, kdramas have expanded from just romance (comedy and melodrama) from the early 2000s to medical, anti-hero vigilante justice, fantasy etc that kept up with viewers' interests

There's just something about 90s jdramas - they capture the perfect tone. jdramas seem to be the most withstanding…
Cdramas especially the historical costume dramas are usually longer for world building and character growth, but they are not all that daunting, as each episode is 45mins, while a kdrama episode can take 65-90 mins. Perhaps you can try out some older contemporary HK dramas that are pretty down to earth and have more manageable episodes. Btw Reset (2022) is a good short cdrama to try out :)

Thanks for the article, it was very helpful! The truth is that I prefer old jdramas from the late 90s / early…
It's gonna be a steep catch up for jdramas but glad that they are doing something about it!

Love Generation and Hero were pretty popular hits. Most of KimuTaku's dramas were, but now not even his drama…
Jdramas have been thrown far back not just by kdramas, but also cdramas and maybe even thai dramas.. Catch up is gonna be hard.

Thanks for this fantastic walk down memory lane. I personally feel very sad to see demise of HK TVB canto dramas.…
Many current wuxia dramas also used more CG, special effects, and green screens than actual kungfu, martial stunt actions that inadvertently lose the true spirit of wuxia dramas

Interesting article, but your methodology ended up missing a major kdrama that gave a boost to Hallyu, at least…
Yea, it's a simple comparison based on the Top 10 ranked/popular dramas on MDL. My Lovely Sam Soon is #17 most popular in the 2000s.

I just noticed, for the 2000s and the 2010s, the "top ranked dramas" and "most popular dramas" have no overlap…
Yea, i noticed that too, and i accord this to the hugely successful Korean Tsunami x digital social tech that swept the globe. Kdramas trumps both in terms of the number of kdrama productions and the landslide popularity of kdramas vs other dramas.

Thanks for this lovely overview/lesson about the evolution of popularity of dramas. Iöö admitt I know very little…
Glad you enjoyed this article! the one thing that surprised me is the landslide popularity of kdramas since the 2000s. For the 2000s, more than 120K had watched Boys Over Flowers ( #01), but only about 45K had watched Hana Yori Dango (#09, and most popular non-kdrama). For the 2010s, kdramas took up the top 43 spots! Even for 1990s, the golden era of jdramas, the most popular drama is Autumn Tale with 9.2K viewers, while 2nd placed jdrama GTO had only 7.2K viewers.

I was born in the early 90's but I enjoyed 1980's TVB dramas the most. No one beats Felix Wong and Margie Tsang…
Oh wow - you probably know 1980s' TVB dramas more than me! Felix Wong's Guo Jing is a classic.

there is one website whose goal is to compile very old dramas. Even though some links are dead, there are a lot…
Thanks much for offering to help provide sites to watch older jdramas! Are subbing done for jdramas in that website?
