Thanks for this fantastic walk down memory lane. I personally feel very sad to see demise of HK TVB canto dramas.…
Many current wuxia dramas also used more CG, special effects, and green screens than actual kungfu, martial stunt actions that inadvertently lose the true spirit of wuxia dramas
I just noticed, for the 2000s and the 2010s, the "top ranked dramas" and "most popular dramas" have no overlap…
Yea, i noticed that too, and i accord this to the hugely successful Korean Tsunami x digital social tech that swept the globe. Kdramas trumps both in terms of the number of kdrama productions and the landslide popularity of kdramas vs other dramas.
Thanks for this lovely overview/lesson about the evolution of popularity of dramas. Iöö admitt I know very little…
Glad you enjoyed this article! the one thing that surprised me is the landslide popularity of kdramas since the 2000s. For the 2000s, more than 120K had watched Boys Over Flowers ( #01), but only about 45K had watched Hana Yori Dango (#09, and most popular non-kdrama). For the 2010s, kdramas took up the top 43 spots! Even for 1990s, the golden era of jdramas, the most popular drama is Autumn Tale with 9.2K viewers, while 2nd placed jdrama GTO had only 7.2K viewers.
I would love to watch some of the really old ones, but it can be difficult to find them. Does anyone have any…
Are there specific ones that you plan to watch? And thank you mjf314 and MidnightKnight for helping out - Much appreciated! I had problems trying to watch/rewatch some older dramas too.
Thanks for the article! A few comments:"Top ranked dramas of the 1980s" is a strange list, because each drama…
Thanks for your comment and sieving out dramas with fewer than 30 ratings - dramas in the 1980s and before are still not as widely watched globally, though many are the classics, and pioneer of many remakes in the subsequent decades. The New Heaven Sword and the Dragon Sabre (1986) by Tony Leung is worth checking out!
And yeah, should have left out "mid" for consistency, though the Korean Wave i felt was stronger in the 2004-5, as more kdramas are exported to more and more countries.
Hopefully, the Japanese production companies will follow the steps of TVB, to make their dramas more accessible to international viewers through subbing and launching their own streaming sites.
Wonderful article again, guys! :) I remembered when I was still a kid during the 90s, Chinese dramas were more…
I had fun reminiscing the times watching dramas with my parents as well while penning this article! Have you watched Alex Su's The Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre (2002)? It is one of my fave in the Condor Heroes Trilogy.
It's really a pity many older Japanese, Chinese, Taiwanese dramas have not been subbed. Hopefully, in time to come, they will be subbed and easily accessible to viewers via popular streaming services such as Netflix etc!
Great article! I like the layout of each decade. Some of the older dramas I have heard of but hadn't seen yet.…
Thank you! PP and BB are fun, hilarious watch for the summer! For the Condor Heroes Trilogy, as you have enjoyed The Untamed, you might want to check out The Condor Heroes 95 (1995) for "hidden" cross references :)
to all: if anyone would like to include boys over flowers, pls hop over to the 2000s list: https://kisskh.at/list/1zEmx8V4
