From the book, Xie Wei is definitely NOT the "sacrificing for love" type. I also found him darker than Ling Buyi, and a significant degree more psycho haha. Really an anti-hero!

Somehow ended up rewatching this drama after reading more about the novel it’s taken from… While I understand it a bit better this second time around, I’ve found out that it really does not do the novel justice.

I’d recommend all of you to check out the original novel (there are some chapters translated and the rest is very easy to auto translate). Name of the original novel is 凤囚凰.

I’m assuming you watched The Long Ballad already? This year I also quite liked Jun Jiu Ling and The Autumn Ballad. If you want to go back in time a bit, Legend of Fuyao, Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms and Ashes of Love are great (more xianxia).

It’s such a refreshing take from the usual “mentor/ parent/boss” saying that one of them is not good enough for the other. Usually there is misunderstanding, separation, drama… BFX definitely called him out on his bs 🤣
