Oh my goodness this drama is so frustrating to watch. If there is one thing I hate the most in a drama is....the....bad character. Super tiring to watch lee geum always crying or give that pitiful look. one moment he acts smart, the next he makes stupid mistakes and I’m only halfway through the drama *face palm*
This drama is just...bad..... I have never seen the main characters as dumb as in this drama. I did enjoy the earlier episodes. But after the ‘tragedy’ struck, their brains become haywire and don’t make sense. I’ve seen really really really bad dramas but this one is the worst XD
Finally after all the shitty saeguks that came out after Rebel Thief Who Stole the People in 2017, this one ticks all the boxes of what a historical drama Should be(no bad characters, no love triangle, no bad ending). Not to say this drama is the best, but certainly better than everything that has come out in recent months. Last year was just a really bad year for saeguks. It has definitely improved this year with many more higher production quality saeguks coming out.
I am a huge fan of political fights and i can say that the screen writer did well with this one. Certainly not the most intriguing plot, but still entertaining to watch. A good balance between romance and politics (which most saeguks failed to deliver. It’s always politics or romance. No in between) The queen swept me off my feet with her character and acting!! I think the queen’s character is among the best I’ve seen so far. Though, I would’ve wished for her character to be more plot driven instead of just to drive the romance. The ending is soooo satisfying that I cried a bucket lol.
can you tell me if this is like perfect couple which i really did not like because of how slap stick/inconsistent…
I wouldn’t say they are a perfect couple. But u can tell that they really love each other. I don’t know what is inconsistent or poorly executed in your point of view. The reason why I really like the romance is because of Sheng xin yi, of how much he has changed for zhou ying. And it was very well directed which made the story more compelling imho. Romance is not my genre because they bored the crap out of me but this one caught my attention. There’s a similar poorly written n cliche plot drama called saimdang light’s diary which has really good romance also but with more mature feel to it. Not the I love u, u love me kinda romance. That’s why I like it. Some people find it boring, but I don’t. So yhh ~ Ming lan I haven’t gotten the chance to watch it.
1 year later and I am still not over this drama. This has got to be the longest and most ridiculous merry go round-ish heart wrenching drama I have ever seen but have one of the best sets of characters in all Chinese historical dramas I have watched. Zhou Ying, Sheng xin Yi, wu pin, wu pin’s parents, wu pin’s 2nd uncle, Zhao bai Shi, Chun xing, zhou Lao si, Sheng si hai. Crazyyyy
This drama got me hooked on the very first episode. 1 hour 20 mine doesn’t feel long at all!! And the last time I felt this way was with the drama My Mister.
I was never a fan of LJS. I’ve seen his acting in several of his dramas, and all I can say is that he always has the same face expression. That good looking guy with a straight face and hands in his pocket. It might work in modern dramas but not historical. And this is supposed to be a tragic one, but he lacks that emotion. He can act, and show emotions but I’m sooo used to watching historical dramas to not be convinced with his acting in this one. But I did cry tho when he was arguing with his father. But that’s just about it. SHS on the other is better. I mean she expresses her emotions with just body gestures. And like some of the comments below, I too did not buy to their romance. Overall it was pretty and just okay.
That was one hell of an opening for the very first episode! Finally something good to watch. I’ve been disappointed with saeguks these past few years. I find myself scouting old dramas to watch.
The misunderstanding pile up in last few episodes was definitely goddammit. I sort of see what they were going…
Agree! If they had added just a few more episodes to wrap the plot up it would definitely be better or pull the plot a bit earlier because the drama took about 20 episodes to set up which is very long. And yesss the relationship between the emperor and his sons are amazing too!! Love all the princes. You can tell each has different characters.
The misunderstanding in the last few episodes is just....so...ridiculous. Also Helien zheng’s character is a lil bit awkward, and princess shaoning is so annoying. But still I really enjoyed this drama from the start til the end. Personally I think the ending fits the situation they’re in considering the number of people sacrificed for the both of them. How can they face each other, living with guilt? Of course it would’ve been better if was otherwise but still it’s reasonable enough for me.
Alsooooo my fav character is Zhao Yun!!! When he knelt and begged the emperor for Ning Yi’s life, that’s it I lost my composure. It’s the first time I’ve seen an eunuch being so involved with the story. And I reeeaaaaally like the dynamic between the emperor and Ning Yi. The distrust, the misunderstanding, the betrayal, the cold shoulder, but at the end of it all the father knows that regardless, Ning Yi is the one for the throne.
I have to disagree about the cinematography. Korea may not have beautiful landscapes and extravagant production…
Not saying the cinematography is bad, they definitely put a lot of effort on the cinematography. just that they tried so hard to make it look very appealing that it doesn’t look real. I’m no pro on camera works/technical stuff but my reaction while watching this was “why does this scene look like they added filter” every time when they filmed the hill and lake scene when the rest of the time it looks normal. Personally I find it inconsistent and too unreal for my taste. You don’t have to blow the budget to make it look pretty, nirvana in fire or Tientsin mystic are good examples of that. I don’t compare this with insane productions such as tribes and empires, the rise of phoenixes or princess agents even. They’re on another league. but most Cdramas are consistent with their colour effects, etc. Just my 2 cents
I can’t believed I managed to force myself to finish this drama after more than 1 month. It is unnecessarily long and boring. The first few 5 episodes or so were very interesting but afterwards, mehhh. I thought this was going to be action packed with good politics and a lil bit of romance. But halfway thru, I started to wonder why this drama is called mr sunshine. Then I realised it was about romance all along. And too bad the romance part was what bored me to death the most. Not at all convincing. I have seen really bad dramas, but I have never dozed off as much as I was with this one. Starting from episode 8 until the very last episode, I fell asleep on every single episode. I can even watch half episode today and continue another half tomorrow lol.
Despite that I believe this drama doesn’t deserve anything below 8. Reason being, really good characters. There isn’t one character that I dislike from this drama. From the slaves, to the king. I started watching this because of Byun yo Han but ended up falling for yoo yeon seok. Such a great actor! The plot wasn’t bad, just too slow and pointless sometimes. I can tolerate bad plot but I can’t at all tolerate bad characters.
Cinematography is just ok for me. I’ve seen a lot of Chinese historical dramas and I can say that the cinematography in this drama is pretty standard. Sooo I was not at all in awe like everybody else. *sigh* there hasn’t been any good historical kdramas in recent months. I though this was going to be the one to blow my mind but sadly no.
After sfd I have been waiting patiently for the writers next drama. I’m so ready for this!! But I’m not sure about song joong ki. I’ve seen him in twdr and I was not at all impressed by his acting. He just doesn’t have that aura to be in historical dramas. but still I’m stoked!!!! I just need a good historical drama cos there hasn’t been any really good ones these past few years.
The last time i managed to finish watching harem fight dramas was the empress of china to which i really like. But honestly after watching NIF, this type of drama bore the crap out of me. Ive tried to watch legend of zhen huan, mi yue but stopped halfway. But i reaaaaally like historical dramas :( i was really esxcited about this one but hmmm
I love all characters except for the female lead. All she does is cry from the first episode until the end lol. But in all honesty this is one of those dramas that has equal amount of good plot and good romance combined. And the soundtracks were played at the right scene at the right time which made the scene more memorable. This drama is 10x better than TMOPB (quality wise) despite it being a web drama. Especially the cgi. Kudos to the team
Have you tried The Qin Empire? or the Advisor's Alliance? Both are super serious historical though. They tend…
I have not seen the qin empire because i couldnt find eng sub anywhere. Ive watched the advisors alliance both seasons and altought it is a good drama, it doesnt really live up to my expectations of what a really good drama should be like. After all these years no dramas have managed to execute excellent storyline and good characters like nirvana in fire and six flying dragons did.. qin empire looks promising but too bad i dont speak mandarin. Sigh
70 eps is a lot but with the Sarft restrictions, we should savor up as much content as possible lmao.
Fingers crossed. I just hope this doesnt turn out to be another tribes n empires. But the Sarft restrictions has only been revised early this year right? This drama would have already finished filming and all so the restrictions wouldnt affect the plot that much. Eh?
70 episodes tho, thats a bad sign for chinese historical dramas. But anything historical im in!! Please let this be good. Havent found any historical drama that is really good in the last 3 years
i have been watching the three kingdom period dramas back to back these past few months. (the highly acclaimed the advisors alliance 1 and 2 and Three Kingdoms) which i really enjoyed. i have no further info on this drama other than the king has a twin that is raised by the simas. the writer went to the length to create a fictional character which is twin to the reigning emperor and make sima yi sided with Han dynasty, i thought at some point the writer is going to alter the plot revolving around the characters but sadly no. it would be nice to see a different end. an example of what if the emperor had a twin brother, and sima yi helped the han dynasty what would be written in history? instead, in order to fit into history the writer made some of the characters really weak such as the emperor and cap pi when we have really strong characters such as the empress, sima yi, guo jia and tang ying.
watching the emperor on screen really make me want to bang my head on the brick wall. he kept talking about righteousnes, how he wanted to save everyone but in the end it caused more unnecessary deaths. and i honestly cannot fathom why he thinks highly of cao cao, with reason such cao cao dream of unifying china and how he is a blessing to the country. seriously?? in this drama i don't see anywhere that cao cao is that great. all i can see is him as power hungry and wanting to overthrow the king (if i had not watched other dramas and do some reading i would not have known how accomplished he is). i just cannot see in what sense does cao cao is helping the king ughh. worst, after all the sacrifices and numerous deaths, the king decided to abdicate in the end. what a waste of peoples effort and lives! i was really enjoying this until i realized the drama is following history and the characters kept making the same stupid mistakes. honestly, it was interesting to see the han emperor side of the story. all this while i have been watching from cao cao and simayi's point of view but too bad. overall 8.5 for me.
now can someone make a drama about zhuge liang? i really like that fella.

Yesss lets just hope this drama delivers!!
