I absolutely loved Reply 1997, but I dropped Reply 1994 halfway (just couldn't vibe w the FL, maybe because I've never liked Go Ah Ra's acting?) but finally got around to watching Reply 1988. While I absolutely enjoyed it, and am a new fan of Lee Hye Ri, I still prefer Reply 1997.
There were so many thing to love about the drama, but what frustrated me was the lack of screen time for the main couple, especially in the later episodes. Everybody in the neighbourhood, even freakin' Jung Bong had more screen time than them. I also skipped 90% of her older sister's storyline. The wrong sister's wedding was shown, in my opinion!
I'm sure the plot waited until the last couple of episodes to reveal who she ended up with to amp up the tension but seriously that should have been resolved earlier so we could actually enjoy their relationship development and root for the couple more.
Great article, thanks so much for pulling it together! I see lots of favourites in this genre on there... here's my list of ones that were not in your article
K-Dramas: * Crash Landing on You * What's Wrong With Secretary Kim * A Poem A Day * Heart Signal 3 (this is actually a reality dating show not a drama but it's kinda great. No screaming, weird people or crazy drama and there's one special couple who basically live a drama ..the heatpack moment, if you know you know)
C-Dramas: * Put Your Head on My Shoulder * I Don't Want to be Friends with You ( this is one I don't see mentioned often)
Taiwanese : * Our Times (this is a Taiwanese film that makes you go awwwww)
J-Drama *Kikazaru Koi niwa Riyuu ga Atte (just finished this and it was so aesthetically pleasing and short & sweet at 10 eps)
The ML plays the dual role of king/clown amazingly well, he really is a talented actor. However the FL's acting as queen was flat, in comparison (no hate, just my opinion!). I wasn't really feeling the romance plotline because of her, but otherwise really enjoyed this drama. Will be keeping my eyes open for more dramas by this ML
I have a huge girl crush on JaeJae. The comeback show they pulled together was amazing, can't believe they pulled off an After School reunion. Hopefully they continue with many more seasons, there are so many hidden gem songs and groups that deserve a comeback
Thank you so much for pulling this article together! I've been on the hunt for film recommendations when I want to take a break from dramas, so this is perfect.
Sometimes the universe drops the perfect drama in your lap, right when you need it. I needed something light-hearted to watch when this popped up on the front page of MDL. The usual over-acting in Jdramas normally makes me wince but I gave this a go because of the rave review & the premise seemed different. Wow. Whoever made the casting decisions is a genius. Kira is fabulous!! I just cannot stress how amazing his character is. I was snickering and giggling at his antics the whole time. Meguru is all kinds of adorable. Wish I could erase this drama from my mind, so I could watch it fresh all over again
Started watching this randomly after I saw it in someone's list of underrated C-dramas. This was shot really beautifully (v aesthetically pleasing!) and the plot kept my interest throughout. Character development is rare in dramas, but this one had it in spades. Nobody's perfect, although some are perfectly dressed (Si Yi's fashion sense = fire). A certain couple got a lot more screentime than I would have personally liked. Hope to see more C-dramas with this quality of cinematography!
Thanks for pulling this article together. Because of you, I started watching drama that I would never have given a second glance (Centimeter of Love) and it is a true gem. :)
Ikr, that Wolf game really hit me strangely. Especially that "Hide well sheep" sentence
Yes!! For some reason the "hide well, sheep!" in the instructions made me convinced that at the end she was going to escape and trick Arisu into becoming the Wolf, and then it would only be the Wolf who would die and the three guys would be saved in the end.
They had an accident wherein her brother, herself, and her ex got injured severely. In the hospital, when the…
Actually her ex fiance broke up with her, because of her brother. Remember her brother was the one who caused the accident, and he had lost some money and was angry w her ex fiance. I guess it was just one more thing her brother did to her ex
This tackles some serious family issues. I was highly triggered by her family's attitude towards her brother. I actually cried really hard (genuinely sobbing!) in sympathy watching EP 34/35 when she talks to her father. This is more of a family drama than romance, and I did end up fastforwarding a lot of scenes w her brother, but I feel like this is true gem of a drama. If anyone can recommend non-fluffy dramas like this one, please do!
Short and sweet. Just what I wanted after watching some dark, gory stuff. Would love to see more C-dramas skip the boring fillers and just keep what's needed. ^___^
Absolutely loved it, silly bonkers one moment, thrilling plot twists the next. I really didn't expect to get this emotional from an older Jdrama like this but honestly was moved quite a few times. Loved the leads.
Really appreciate the effort you've put into this article. Thanks!
