"You can't be a sentimental swordsman!"

The Sentimental Swordsman was a “whodunit” mystery regarding a terrifying assassin called the Plum Blossom Bandit. Despite dressing in a pink ninja costume and throwing poison darts in the shape of flowers, this baddie left a host of bodies in their wake. Based on a story by Gu Long, the film was packed with characters and red herrings.

Little Flying Dagger Li is headed home with his faithful servant having been away for ten years. His sword brother, Long Xiao Yun, had saved his life during a battle with the Plum Blossom Bandit (PBB) so Li gave him his girl and his property as payment leaving afterwards. Now, the PBB has returned and Li is duty bound to bring him down. On the way he befriends a traveling swordsman, Ah Fei. Not long after returning to the area, fights break out over a golden vest that is impervious to PBB’s darts. Li is framed as the PBB with all the local clans coming after him. He stays to clear his name but his life is in constant danger from revenge seekers and the PBB.

The opening scenes and many other outdoor scenes were a stunning icy vista of snow and frozen lakes. The sound stage sets attempted to match the frosted world. Not to worry there were plenty of breakaway sets for bodies to jump or be thrown through! The pace rarely slowed down enough for the characters or audience to catch their breath.

Ti Lung was perfectly cast as the sentimental swordsman though I will argue with Li’s view that he could abandon his fiancé to another man and she’d be cool with it. Derek Yee appeared to be a stand in for the no longer available David Chiang given that his dress and character were similar to the ones Chiang played opposite Ti. Ching Li was the woman no man could deny and seeking vengeance on the PBB. Ku Feng was the blindly hypocritical clan leader who’d lost his son to the PBB. Norman Chu made an appearance as the Iron Flute whose little brother was murdered by the PBB and who also jumped to conclusions. And stiff upper lip Yueh Hua played the BFF Xiao Yun. Yuen Wah made a brief appearance as the love-struck swordsman Long Sheng.

The fight sequences were actually pretty good given that most of them were sword fights with a little hand to hand thrown in on occasion. With several acrobatic scenes you could see where the stunt doubles jumped in to lend an assist. As a Shaw Brothers movie, the characters were duty bound to use creative weaponry as well. The Poison Kid’s clan employed a variety of poisonous reptiles, big bugs, and amphibians, but they weren’t the only ones doling out poisonous treats. Thankfully, the bodies piled up without the spewing blood and flying limbs you’d see in a Chang Cheh flick.

The Sentimental Swordsman was overstuffed with characters and revenge plots, but they were easy to follow. Due to the casting, I knew immediately who the PBB was going to be. It took Li a little longer to read the writing on the wall. He could be very sentimental.

Welcome to Atlay where home is found in people, not places!

Some dramas are to be reviewed. This, 'To the wonder' needs to be experienced!

On paper, the plot is surprisingly simple involving a young woman who returns home, a community goes about its daily rhythms , a soft romance that unfolds gently and subtly. That’s about it.
But what sets it apart despite its rudimentary premise is the way it captures the lives of each character living in Altay. From grasslands to shifting season, somehow nature was the backdrop and the main character. Mind you this isn't just a tourist brochure but every episode and everyone living in it felt like a living reality.

What impressed me the most after visuals was how humane everyone was. Everyone grieved in their own ways, hesitated, resisted change and made very questionable choices holding down their traditions in a world that refuses to stand still. I liked how the generational tension and cultural aspect around it was portrayed without making anyone a villain.

I also enjoyed the romance between Web Xiu and Ba Tai. It was soft, romantic without overpowering the actual theme. A near perfect in my books!

My only small complaint was the tone of the finale. It felt out of theme. After 7 episodes of grounded storytelling, the last one felt dramatized excessively. It felt more like drama for drama sake. Don't get me wrong,it isn't terrible. Oh far from it, just not what I was expecting in the finale.

Acting wise, I have no complaints. I felt everyone played their parts really well. And props to the casting director because every single person on screen feels perfectly chosen for their role.
Production and cinematography was exceptional, I mean really exceptional. It just elevated my whole viewing experience. I liked how grand it looked but there were so many little details and intimacy with soft expressions captured to the point. I liked the costumes too.

Overall, I loved it. This is one of the dramas where everyone has a story going on and it came out cohesively and beautifully at the end. In a limited runtime, it managed to capture the essence of living, adapting, learning and loving and it was told in the most heartwarming way.
I didn’t go into this with any prior knowledge of the culture, so I can’t really comment on how accurate the portrayal is. But I can say this I definitely walked away having learned something.

Will I recommend it ? You bet, I will. Do yourself a favor and watch this. And the cherry on the cake is it is 8 episodes and a perfect binge worthy drama!

Arnold Tua

Arnold and Tua are such a refreshing and exciting pair in Only Friends: Dream On.
Their chemistry feels fun, warm, and full of sparks in the best way. Every interaction between them has this light, playful energy that makes you smile without even realizing it. The way they look at each other, tease each other, and slowly grow closer feels natural and heart fluttering.
Arnold brings a charming confidence that makes every scene lively, while Tua adds softness and sincerity that balances everything beautifully. Together they create moments that feel sweet, exciting, and full of promise. Watching them feels like witnessing something slowly bloom into something special.

what a journey!!

The humour: it worked for me, it’s hard for me to pinpoint what makes the humour work for me and what not, but it just feels like the characters are having fun and not that the humour is written for the audience. It did fade a bit as the story got heavier, but it din’t disappear.

The cast density: soooo many characters, and I love most of them, they all matter! (Let’s also mention the amount of good looking characters). I loved the eight disciples, they have different principles, different temperaments, different ways of standing upright in the world. Master Li collected different people with conviction not power. But besides the eight disciples, there were still so many interesting characters, Dongjun’s family for one, so fun - and explains his interesting character.

Of course, baili Dong Jun - the emotional spine. The joy of watching him grow over more than a decade without rushing it. I usually dislike time jumps, they break the immersion for me, but it worked well in this story about youth.

The friendship triangle, I loved their loyalty without conditions. Neither of them abandoned their friends. There is this one line “he didn’t blame you. but I do” - I loved his honesty and the pain that this was. Ah honestly the friendships baili Dong Jun had and the things that happened made me cry quite a bit of times.

Now the romance: at first I was bothered by the lack of chemistry but I stopped caring. For me, this drama shows that love is just part of life, I didn’t need to see the chemistry of reasons why they fell in love, however saying that, love is not just a part of life, this show cleary shows also how love moves the world… there was this part where Yue Yao and Wen Jun where complementing each other on how beautiful they were and Ji ruofeng said “the kind that… brings disaster to the country”.

I loved this journey. I loved the failures. This story doesn’t always compensate you with a victory for the protagonist, but that was just a part of their youth and how they get shaped into their protagonist roles haha.

Not a romance — sacrifice

Tender Light” is not just a love drama. It is a story about survival, fear, and sacrifice — a story where not a single emotion feels false.

A separate tragedy is the police officer, played by Ye Zuxin. A cold observer, a “player” who seems to place bets on other people’s destinies. He understands them better than anyone — and still condemns them. His tears in the finale are not justification, but the acknowledgment of his own moral catastrophe. Like Pontius Pilate: he sees the truth, yet chooses the law.

Every character here is neither purely “good” nor “bad.” They are alive. Jealousy, resentment, doubt, weakness — all weighed like in real life. The husband: a beast or a victim? The former friend: a traitor or simply someone who could not survive her own pain? The school friends: the embodiment of purity and first loyalty. There are no simple answers.

“Tender Light” is a story about how love does not always save.
Sometimes it only gives you the strength to endure punishment, fear, and loneliness.
And yet, it exists — quiet, sacrificial, mature.
The kind of love that does not demand, but gives.

Politics at its peak

Swords into Plowshares is set around the 5 Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period after the fall of the Tang Dynasty and thus set upon a time in medieval China where multiple general warlords ascending into royalty have become common as such is the turmoil spread all throughout. It follows the story of three prominent characters, Qian Hong Chu, Zhao Kuang Yin and Guo Rong and their experiences and tribulations throughout this period.

The story and setting isn't the usual chinese costume drama. Its setting is based on actual history. The politics is heavy while presenting realistic themes and characters full of meaning and nuance. Genuinely, it has been a while since I've seen something of this caliber in chinese costume dramas and I am thankful this one caught my attention around here in MDL and gave it a try. If you ever get tired of idol dramas from modern to costume dramas and is seeking a quality inducing drama, then this is the start for you. It has everything you're looking for if you want a dynamic setting, characters and plot that by episode 18 above much has happened that it feels like its been many episodes.

Best in its last episodes

This drama is at its strongest when it's about the historical era, whether it's the actual past life scenes, or when they're trying to figure the past out during modern day. This happens in the later half of the show, which ended up being my favorite episodes. It really feels like there are stakes to the romance and the friendships, and the parallels between past and present work really well, while the first half goes for a more typical mid-2010s type rom-com plot, which I didn't enjoy that much, especially since the female lead had no idea about it and just felt very detached from the main plot — an issue I also had with dramas like My Love from the Star.

I do think the love triangle was done extremely well here. Even though I already quite like this trope (as opposed to most people), this is one of my favorites because it really shows the different ways of love and how it affects who ends up together and who doesn't. It's also really clear that everyone cares about everyone else, which is so much more touching than annoying competitions. The love triangle gets to shine a lot in the last episodes, not by taking over, but by elevating the stakes.

Where is the the intrigue and charm?

This series is missing something as a viewer. Neither is it able to build intrigue and mystery nor does it have endearing loveable characters to root for. It is not very successful either as a story or in its protagonists. I am struggling to feel anything for the leads and the cases they are chasing. It could have been so much better with evocative ambient music and more developed interpersonal connection. Master - Protegee , King- daughter, King- Minister, Detective duo, ...there is nothing specifically charming enough in any of these relationships, nor in the mysteries these pairings are trying to uncover/cover. What great talent, Bai Lu and Wang Xingyue could have been great even as siblings in this series, only if the screenplay was good enough, but it is not! It tries so hard to be smart that it forgets to be entertaining! Sorry guys, it is a skippable drama.

Cute romance, but weak plot: 7/10 ⭐️

I watched this drama while it was airing, but initially dropped around episode 12 and, after picking it up again because of its high rating, I remember why. The story just doesn’t fully engage me and feels mediocre overall for its high rating.

The transmigration element seems a bit unnecessary since the FL adapts to the cultivation world almost instantly. Apart from some modern knowledge about technology etc., her past life barely matters. It feels like it was just added to the overall comedy which I did enjoy sometimes. But she could have simply been written as a "native" character in that world.

While I find the FL very relatable for simply wanting to enjoy life, eating good food and treating everything like a vacation, and I really like Wang Yinglu as an actress (she was amazing in 12 Letters!!), her character feels kind of naive. She fell in love very quickly, especially considering that the ML is introduced as the story’s biggest villain. While he is clearly a victim of the other sects, he’s still portrayed as dangerous. Yet she doesn't seem to question that and trusts him very easily, and their romance develops at a pace that feels rushed. But despite my criticisms, I do think the romance is very cute. The first arc is actually enjoyable, if you only watch for the romance. Watching their feelings develop was so sweet and heartwarming, especially since they do have lots of chemistry on- and off-screen!
Another issue is that the side characters (and the acting) don’t particularly interest me, and their storylines don’t add much engagement :(

What I really like though is the beautiful soundtrack. The OST is really amazing and one of the highlights of the drama!

What I like the most so far:
✿ The way Sima Jiao adores Liao Tingyan and would burn the world for her 🥹
✿ This drama did the star-crossed lovers trope and "villain would burn the world for their love" the best!!
✿ Liao Tingyan being all silly and cutesy!
✿ The OST!
✿ The comedy is fine too, most of the time ^o^

Overall, I don’t quite understand the high rating, but I might still finish it to see if it improves :)

A love without end

I liked it. In a word, it's a great series. Does it have flaws? Of course it does. But it's a very compelling story, and the filming is done to match it. The actors are good, the director is good, the costumes are good, the fight scenes aren't bad, they could have been better. It's a low-budget series, so I don't want to criticize it too much. However, the subject matter and its delivery are well done. I liked it.

I don't want to go into details. It tells the story of a girl sold by her father who escapes and joins a group of assassins. It also touches upon the conflicts between the states of the time.

I started watching it wondering if it would be very bloody because of the title, but it wasn't like that. There is blood, of course. But not as much as one might expect, considering the title. There are many fight scenes. There's excitement. There's love. There's interest. There's jealousy. There's enmity. Everything is there.

Some mistakes in the fight scenes were noticeable. Some makeup variations were striking. There were nonsensical things. I don't want to go into those details to avoid making it too long. These negative aspects and the deviation from reality were the main flaws. Yes, this is a film. It's fiction. It's not authentic. However, the viewer shouldn't dismiss something that isn't real. Some effort should be made in that direction. It can't just be a hasty, "I wrote it, and it's done." It's an adaptation of a novel. That's why it's interesting and good. It could have been much better. I liked the actors. I really liked Li Yi Tong, one of the lead actors. I've watched many of his dramas and I like him. I watched Qu Chu Xiao in this drama; I hadn't seen her before. She was quite reasonable and very suitable for this role. I liked her. Wang Duo was better than I expected. He was emotional, angry, and aggressive. He did his role very well. But his ability to act as if he could see while blind is a bonus. I really liked Jill Hsu. I think she gave a fantastic performance; I think she deserved an award. Well done. I also really liked Li Zi Feng. He was very, very good. Well done. Zhou Yu Xi also tried, even surpassing herself in some parts. I really liked Yin Zhu Sheng. I really liked Si Xua Ding. Well done. The acting was good. I liked it. I recommend it to those who enjoy this type of film.

Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy is a creative and odd fantasy movie. It is very different from what I usually watch, but I still really enjoyed it! While the beginning was a bit confusing and excessive, it swiftly became better and better and I ended up very enthralled! My only other complaint is that the CGI in some parts of the movie looked weird and felt off, but otherwise the movie was produced well.

JISOO JISOO JISOO! Tbh I watched the movie because of her and Ahn Hyo Seop. While I now see why she gets critized for her acting, I still enjoyed it pretty much. I'm looking forward to Boyfriend on Demand so much!

I also need to say that the dokkaebi was so cute and it was really nice seeing their moment with Kim Dok Ja!

Note: I haven't read the web novel but I want to do it now.

I truly recommend the movie if you want some action and a break from your usual life!
