A CHILLED CUTE ROMANCE
I absolutely loved this drama! It’s refreshing because it doesn’t follow the typical Chinese drama formula — there’s no scheming “villain” character we’re forced to hate, and no annoying side character constantly interfering with the leads’ romance. Instead, it’s a pure love story where the only real obstacles are the characters themselves. The misunderstandings felt natural and were kept to just the right amount — unlike in Here to Heart, where the endless miscommunication became frustrating. Here, the pacing was perfect, making it easy to sit back, relax, and simply enjoy the cuteness.
What makes this show stand out is that it doesn’t rely on exaggerated clichés. There’s no rich tycoon falling for a poor girl. Instead, we see more realistic dynamics:
- An ex-boyfriend pressured by his father, leaving because his and the heroine’s career paths don’t align.
- A doctor who falls in love with a normal, career-driven woman.
- A female lead who is independent, strong, and never reduced to being weak or overly cutesy.
The acting was excellent as well — full of subtle nuances that made the characters feel real and relatable.
With so many repetitive storylines in dramas, sometimes it’s worth appreciating a show like this: one without an over-the-top villain, just a genuine and heart warming love story.
The only thing I think would have made the show a bit more cohesive is just to add a few scenes for context purpose why the ex-boyfriend broke up with the FL as apparently it was not obvious enough after reading some of the reviews. Maybe that he was trying his best to prove to his dad and was forced to break up with her but decided I can make it on my own I want her back in my life. (This was my impression from when I watched but I do feel like some people didn't get that lol)

Another light and fluffy series with an adorable green forest couple. This one has an even slower pacing and smaller scope than Shine on Me, in terms of plot and background/location. It focuses on traditional Chinese medicine and not much else, which can be boring for some. I expected to fast forward a lot through it, but found that I liked learning about it, even if I have no opinion on its effectiveness. I like how the story does not propose that TCM replace scientific methods of curing people, but can be a good supplement instead, to alleviate pain and discomfort. Introducing a different ingredient at the beginning of every episode was also a nice touch. This drama also focuses on healing and has a very good message...that in order to be happy in a relationship, you have to learn to love and value yourself- not just in terms of your physical health, but also in terms of your mental health and who you surround yourself with. The female lead, Shen Xifan, was coming out of an abusive relationship, which was a cause of anxiety and physically affected her. The male lead, He Suye, helps her out of it in the sweetest, most supportive way. Later on, she returns the favor by reuniting him with his father, who he had an unresolved resentment with.
Their interactions were very cute and fun to watch. The chemistry between Xuo Ruohan and Zhang Linghe is also good. I don't have a favorite type of female lead and don't specifically care if they are depicted as girlish, mature, tomboyish, etc for as long as the character fits the story and the main couple has good chemistry. Xuo Ruohan's Shen Xifan is very ladylike. She is gentle but strong, vulnerable but also a survivor. She has dreams and ambitions (ex: studying abroad) that she isn't afraid to explore. Her character reminds me of Zhang Ruonan's character in the First Frost, in a good way and with far less trauma. He Suye is a very caring and soft spoken male lead, but he can also be boyish/playful. He has a naughty streak that can be quite funny, especially when exposed by his grandfather and when his friends tease him. I like how, in spite of being a gentle and soft spoken doctor, he knew when to get angry and stood up to her misogynistic ex without even saying a word.
I also really like the female lead's parents and the male lead's grandfather. They were very supportive of the main couple and there were a lot of heartwarming family interactions because of that. Her parents' reaction when they found out how nasty her ex had been to her was very touching.
Despite being shot in only a few locations, The Best Thing is also (visually) a very beautiful drama to watch. There were many shots of landscapes filled with flowers, blooming plants and trees...the characters looked and felt like they were in a fairy tale, even if filming was done in the heart of the city. I kind of wondered if all the flowers were real in the wedding scene at the end. Everything was so beautifully arranged/decorated that it made me wonder what happened to all that foliage after the event.
One thing I kind of took issue with is that the female lead decided to pursue a private business after she came back from abroad. I don't have a problem with career changes, but a big deal was made of her studying hotel management in terms of the plot, so it was strange how she decided on the career change so abruptly after coming back; it felt like a waste after going through so much effort to get her scholarship.

the best thing I did is watch this show single *sobs*
I will stand by Xifan no matter how many haters she has. I connected to her feelings throughout the show and sobbed when she did. I love Suye and do appreciate how he grew from his flaws. The "secondary" couple was very underbaked, but I know the show is way more focused on the main couple instead. I adored all the cute moments and loved the cozy atmosphere. That wedding was also one of the prettiest ones I have seen so far (might take inspiration for my own hehe). <3Was this review helpful to you?

Love, Growth and a Shining Romance
When I write my reviews, I usually just dive straight into what I absolutely loved about the story and the few things that didn’t quite work for me. So, yeah…What I Loved
1. Shen Xifan & He Suye’s Chemistry
Oh my god, the slow-burn romance here was so good. From their first meeting at the clinic, every little moment between them felt real and heartfelt. The way they gradually opened up to each other? Perfection. The buildup to the final confession—chef’s kiss.
2. Character Growth
Xifan’s journey was honestly inspiring. She went from being stuck in that awful relationship with Yan Heng to rediscovering herself, chasing her dreams, and becoming so much more confident. And Suye’s whole backstory with his parents and why he chose TCM over Western medicine made him even more layered and lovable.
3. The Soundtrack
Not even gonna lie, the music in this show was top-tier. Every song hit at just the right moment and made the emotional scenes even better.
4. The Humour
This show had some genuinely hilarious moments! Like when Suye pretended he lost that "ring" Xifan gave him and panicked each time he was about to be found out. Adorable🥰. And his reaction when Li Jie interrupted their almost kiss. 😂 Gold. The humour kept the drama from getting too heavy, which I really appreciated.
5. Realistic Toxic Relationship Depiction
Yan Heng was infuriatingly realistic. His arrogance, manipulation, and overall toxicity made Xifan’s struggle feel so real. Seeing her finally walk away was such a powerful moment.
What I Didn’t Love
1. Not that big of a deal actually but I was expecting something mysterious when Suye's face was hidden behind a mask at the beginning. The face reveal just kinda happened and it was nothing at all. Lol. The disappointment.
2. Yan Heng Was Too One-Dimensional
I get that he was supposed to be the toxic ex, but I wish we got a bit more backstory. What happened to make him go from a loving boyfriend to that over seven years? Give me something!
3. Xiangya’s Sudden Mood Swing
Her anger toward Lin Yishen after overhearing that phone call from his mum? A little much considering she was the one who kept Lin Yishen in friend zone and said it'd be impossible for friends to grow beyond just friends. Now, my guy had to face her annoyance over her unannounced feelings when he didn't even know what was going on.
4. Suye’s Endless Hesitation
Okay, I get it, he was shy, but after a while, I just wanted to shake him and say, “Dude, just tell her already!” His nervousness was cute at first, but it dragged on just a little too long.
5. Some Loose Ends
So, nothing was really addressed about Suye's relationship with his dad. No talk. No nothing. Just swept it under the rug. I'm not gonna lie, that along with Yan Heng's behaviour was the most annoying thing ever.
Final Thoughts
Overall, this was such a fun, emotional, and engaging watch. Xifan and Suye’s romance was beautifully done, and the character development really hit home. Sure, there were a few flaws but they didn’t take away from how much I enjoyed the story.
Between the sweet and swoon worthy moments and the realistic struggles, this one was totally worth following till the very end!

A normal romance done beautifully
I'm a sucker for normal people doing normal things in media and it being portrayed beautifully. This drama falls into that category, two normal people falling in love in the most organic, simple way yet still keeping me invested throughout their journey. I just wanna say that their relationship is a copy paste of what I ask God for everyday, a relationship that is gentle, sweet, and patient.Anyways, on to my actual critiques! I want to start with talking about the acting, specifically the FL's acting. I don't think it was bad but I think it was lacking, in a very subtle way. There were many instances throughout the show where I would be watching her and then suddenly I would realize that she is an actress acting in a show. I don't know if that makes sense, but her acting would make me lose my sense of immersion in the show. If she was a new actress I would say its because she lacks experience and doesn't really know how to fully become her character. Looking at her history, I don't think thats the case and she is simply stuck like that now. Again, her acting wasn't horrible but it wasn't amazing either. Also side note I wish some writers would realize that not all female actresses can act cute, and thats okay. Her cute scenes felt wayyy to unnatural and awkward.
I already talked about how much I love the premise of the show so I will try to keep this brief. The story revolved mainly around their love story and some minor points of conflict throughout. I call them minor because they were literally all settles within a couple of episodes such as the ex-bf, her study abroad dilemma, and her mother. I want to say that I suspected they would bring her mothers conflict into the show from the beginning but she way it was executed felt almost like, collateral (?). Like they didn't know what to do for the last couple episodes so they just threw that in and called it a day. Something so big was resolved perfectly within like two episode and were supposed to smile and nod, righttttt. Apart from this small critique I really don't have much else to say when it comes to the plot. Their romance advanced at a very reasonable pace, not too slow and not too fast, it was just right! Sometimes it did feel like the show was dragging but I wouldn't say it ever got boring, if they cut it by two episode I don't think much would have been missed but either way it was fine.
This is already kind of long but I want to finish by talking about the relationships in the show. I am not gonna lie, I did not care much for the FL's friends romance, like at all. I don't think even the writers themselves cared much for their romance considering we barely saw anything about their backstory or their actual relationship progression. I cant be invested in something that has no substance or story to be invested in, you know what I mean? Now onto the main characters. How can one achieve a love like theirs? When you find out, I will personally come to your house to get that information, thank you in advance. No but seriously they were so gentle and patient with each other it made me want to cry sometimes. I love that it wasn't love at first sight for them. You know those dramas where the man would see a woman and then decide they will kill/die for her without even knowing her? Yeah, thank goodness the characters in this show weren't like that. Yes, there was initial attraction but that just how relationships in real life are, people are attracted to each other and thus interest begins. They went through the liking phase and then love phase perfectly, never once going into that weird obsessed and possessive phase some of these dramas like to go through. They loved each other in such a healthy way. Obviously, were not gonna talk about the ethics of a doctor pursuing their patient so i'm just gonna say that detail got lost in the wind....Other than that I loved everything about them and think they were the perfect people for each other.
I'm gonna give it a 9/10 because although there were some issues I think the story was too good to give anything lower. They are the blueprint of an attainable and realistic romance.

THE BEST THING
I really love this drama—it’s an experience that feels both refreshing and incredibly comfortable. "The Best Thing" creates a serene atmosphere where every detail, from the breathtaking scenery to the soothing OST, plays a part in crafting an immersive viewing experience.Zhang LingHe's portrayal of He SuYe is a standout; his character is an absolute green flag. His gentle, caring nature shines through in every scene, making it impossible not to be drawn to his authenticity and emotional depth. The subtle moments—like the simple act of drinking tea—become emblematic of the quiet yet powerful bond that forms between him and Shen Xi Fan.
The on-screen chemistry between Shen Xi Fan and He SuYe is nothing short of amazing. Their interactions feel natural and full of genuine warmth, inviting viewers to believe in the slow, tender development of love. The narrative succeeds not just in its romance but in the portrayal of a healthy, non-toxic environment, enriched by supportive parents and friends. This aspect of the drama highlights a refreshing take on relationship dynamics—one that encourages growth and healing rather than drama or toxicity.
Overall, "The Best Thing" is a beautifully crafted drama that offers a blend of emotional comfort and visual delight. It is a testament to the power of genuine storytelling where every element, from the cast's performances to the meticulously chosen setting and soundtrack, contributes to an unforgettable viewing experience.

Strong FL for once !
This show was a joy for me to watch mainly because of the FL. For once she’s taking control of her life. Including making the first moves on the man she loves. Their story is not only of love but unconditional support and equality. I think it is important to mention equality in a culture that is not very female empowering. The ML is cute as a button and definitely the model boyfriend. I loved the way he got closer to her slowly not to scare her while treating her for her many different aches. The second leads are also super nice and even their arc story is nice to watch.

warm, sweet, and just the right kind of soft.
this drama felt like a hug after the emotional rollercoaster that was the first frost. it’s not the kind of show that wrecks you, it just gently wraps you in sunshine and kindness. the relationship between the leads was easily the best part: natural, warm, and full of mutual respect. their skinship didn’t feel forced or overly dramatized, it just fit, and that made everything more real.i really appreciated how healthy their relationship was. they actually communicated like adults (imagine that), and there was no over the top drama or unnecessary angst between them. that said, the storyline toward the end kind of lost me, that arc felt a bit tacked on and dragged things out more than it needed to.
still, this is a great comfort drama. if you’re in the mood for something that’ll make you smile and maybe feel a little too single, this one’s a lovely pick.

Refreshingly sweet and simple
There’s a lot to like about this sweet story of two kind but hurting people finding healing with each other. The premise: A young doctor who practices traditional Chinese medicine and a hotel manager getting treated for insomnia open up to each other about heartbreak and family problems over the course of this slow-burn romantic drama.
Zhang Ling He’s male lead is gentle, caring, and a bit lonely. He makes a convincing couple with Xu Ruo Han’s female lead, whose sweet, playful personality immediately charms him when they meet in a doctor-patient context. But she’s cautious about getting into another relationship after a painful breakup.
Their relationship develops very naturally, from acquaintances to friends to flirting, although there’s clearly a spark there from the start. They’re always stealing glances at each other and secretly smiling when they’re together. It’s refreshing to see a simple story about two mature, fairly well-adjusted adults. No childish or toxic behavior here.
One of the qualities I like about ZLH as an actor is how warm his gaze is. In romantic roles, the way he looks at his partner is like they’re the only person in the world. His Dr. He Su Ye is such an empathetic character. You can see all his emotions in his eyes, and it’s like he’s experiencing the FL’s feelings along with her. He’s a natural talent for someone who’s only been acting for 5 years.
The leisurely pace, soft-focus style, lovely shots of nature and flowers, and mellow music make for a pleasant viewing experience. Plus, the leads are very likable, there’s minimal angst, no melodramatic ups and downs — just an uncomplicated, satisfying story about normal people navigating life and relationships. It makes a nice break from more serious or stressful dramas.

THE LOVE STORY OF SPRING
I went into The Best Thing expecting just another sweet romance drama, but what I got was so much more—a heartfelt story about healing, love, and finding comfort in the most unexpected places. Now that all 28 episodes have aired, I can confidently say this one left a lasting impression.Based on Sheng Li’s novel Loving You is the Best Thing I Have Done, the drama stars Zhang Linghe as He Suye, a gentle and thoughtful traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) doctor, and Xu Ruohan as Shen Xifan, a strong-willed hotel manager who’s been struggling with insomnia for years. Their love story unfolds in the quietest, most endearing ways—through late-night remedies, unexpected neighborly encounters, and the kind of small, thoughtful gestures that make your heart melt.
At the start, Shen Xifan is skeptical of He Suye’s treatments. She’s used to powering through life on her own, relying on caffeine and sheer willpower rather than herbal medicine and acupuncture. He Suye, on the other hand, is calm, patient, and always watching out for her, even when she insists she’s fine. Their relationship begins as a simple doctor-patient dynamic, but when they realize they live next door to each other, things start shifting in ways neither of them expect.
What I love about their romance is how natural it feels. There’s no over-the-top drama, no forced misunderstandings—just two people slowly letting their walls down. He Suye isn’t the type to rush into things; he expresses his care through quiet actions, like making sleep-inducing sachets for her or adjusting her diet plan to help with her insomnia. And Shen Xifan, despite her tough exterior, finds herself drawn to his warmth and steadiness. It’s the kind of relationship that builds gradually, making every little moment between them feel even more meaningful.
One thing that really stands out in The Best Thing is how visually stunning it is. Every scene feels carefully crafted, from the soft lighting in He Suye’s traditional clinic to the peaceful, moonlit streets where the characters share quiet conversations. The cinematography makes you feel like you’re right there with them, breathing in the scent of herbal tea or watching the city lights reflect on the river.
The drama also does an amazing job blending modern life with traditional Chinese culture. He Suye’s clinic, with its wooden cabinets filled with medicinal herbs, feels like a peaceful retreat from the chaos of the outside world. And the contrast between Shen Xifan’s fast-paced hotel job and He Suye’s slow, mindful approach to healing adds another layer of depth to their story.
For me, The Best Thing isn’t just a love story—it’s a reminder that love, in its purest form, is about care and understanding. Zhang Linghe plays He Suye with such quiet sincerity that you can’t help but fall for his character. And Xu Ruohan perfectly captures the struggles of someone learning to trust again. Their chemistry isn’t flashy, but it’s the kind that sneaks up on you and stays in your heart long after the final episode.
If you love slow-burn romances, thoughtful storytelling, and a drama that just feels good to watch, this one is definitely worth your time. It’s cozy, emotional, and leaves you with the kind of warmth that lingers—like a comforting cup of tea on a chilly night.

Clean your palate with a slice of life story, beautiful imagery and TCM.
I want to give props for how unique this drama was compared to the others I've seen (and the ones I like). This drama flips cliches and common romance tropes on their heads. Our male lead stank of second male lead syndrome very early on, which is not something I'm used to in my male leads. He was kind and gentle and honestly pursuing a woman who he thought was still in a relationship. I didn't like that very much. However, her behaviour was very unlike someone in a relationship, so she did enable this. You know, I'm used to the domineering CEO being the male lead, but this time, it was the ex! This drama really does flip tropes around, and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would've. This was very refreshing. If you need a more realistic slice of life story with no over the top drama, this is your guy. I also very much enjoyed learning about traditional Chinese medicine in such a unique way. As a scientist myself, I do believe that a combination of Western and traditional Chinese medicine will be the future of medicine and TCM is nothing to dismiss.
