Semi-Translated
What I’m about to say as a huge Kim Seon Ho fan is painful. But please hear me out.KSH delivered so did the FL but not enough to catapult the show into a classic, iconic, or stellar list.
The first few episodes, I enjoyed but when I reached the latter episodes, esp. Episode 10 onwards, I found myself pressing the 1.5x speed button (one of my proven and tested indicators as a longtime K content fan). I felt it became repetitive and tiresome. I couldn’t believe myself and had to pause to accept the fact that I was bored and KSH wasn’t enough to save me and the show. It must be the pacing?
From that point on it became a struggle to go on, as it became a chore. I wasn’t enjoying it anymore. Also, the leads chemistry didn’t reach me sadly. This should have been reduced to a 8-10 episodes max.
Cinematography + Music 10/10.
I still finished it as my means of support to KSH but I’m sorry, this is not it. 8/10 overall. I’m a fan but this must be said.
And by the way, I need to say this. This show reminds me so much of Kill Me, Heal Me x IONTBO, fusion. Those two dramas that I mentioned are even worthy of a rewatch than this. Mianhae. :(

Love Is the One Language We Still Misunderstand
*Can This Love Be Translated?* is a quiet, thoughtful K-drama that lets emotions breathe, and the Canadian scenery plays a huge role in that. The wide skies, snow-dusted streets, and calm lakes mirror the characters’ inner loneliness and longing. Canada isn’t just a backdrop here; it becomes a psychological space where distance, silence, and unfamiliarity force the characters to confront their true feelings. What makes this drama compelling is its subtle use of psychological theory—how unspoken trauma, emotional translation, and attachment styles shape the way people love and misunderstand each other. The story suggests that love isn’t only about language, but about emotional literacy: how well we read ourselves and others. Every hesitation and pause feels intentional, grounded in realistic human behavior.
The OST is another standout. Soft, melancholic tracks blend seamlessly with the visuals, heightening the emotional weight without overpowering the scenes. Together, the music, setting, and introspective storytelling create a deeply immersive and emotionally resonant experience.

Amazing storytelling on such a subject
It's more than a love story. Intertwined is the lead female's wounds around finding and holding onto love. I honestly cannot believe how the writer and director managed to portray this in such a beautiful, extraordinary and simplistic way. It's funny, quirky, lovable and insightful. A must-watch!I feel everybody should watch this drama just for the story on facing your wounds and how they can show up - but to know it doesn't define you, nor your chances at being loved.
I love the concept of the translator and how that fitted in with the storytelling as a whole. This drama has been a great joy to watch.
I was not expecting this when I started watching this drama. I love how healing, wounds, thought patterns are cropping up more in dramas, taking us on a deeper connection with the characters and life situations, and portrayed in simple ways! For any audience member to resonate with, it’s allowing us to walk away with a more deeper understanding for our own situations.

A very unique and unexpected series!
You have got to watch Can This Love Be Translated!!!!!I have a blending of mixed feelings about it - However, I liked it a lot - it was very different than what I am usually used to but in spite of the strangeness and beauty of the series, watching was definitely worthwhile.
This series was strange, imaginative, distinctive, blending fantasy, surrealism, memory, and dreams and romantic as well. Ending was lovely. The scenes taken in various nations like Italy and Canada give it an international taste as well.
Kim Seon Ho as the ML and Go Youn Jung as the FL did an excellent job - especially the FL, having to be 2 different people, one imaginary one real.
Kim Seon Ho, from Cha Cha Cha, was handsome as usual but played a quite serious role.
The Hong sisters, who wrote the script hit another success, although there are a lot of mixed remarks on MDL.
I would give it at least an 8.5 but it is hard to score it because it is so different and can't be compared to other series.
I think Korea filming is finally realizing that it can't keep making dumb series like Potato Lab, Dynamite Kiss and other like series. Many are getting pretty tired of the same old tropes.
Idol I, Translated, Love Me, Spring Fever and others coming up, hopefully will bring new ideas - let's hope, C dramas and J dramas are just around the corner competing.
Thank you for reading this!

Hater doing what they do best
Trust me, you’re in for a treat with this one. Seriously don’t let all the negative reviews scare you off before you’ve even given it a fair shot. I went in expecting something mid because of all the complaining online, but it ended up being such a fun, satisfying watch. The chemistry between the leads is honestly one of the best parts. It feels natural and easy, like you actually want to keep watching them interact instead of rolling your eyes at forced scenes. Also, can we talk about the production quality? The background music is so on point. It kicks in at the right moments without being too dramatic or distracting, and it really helps build the mood. The cinematography is gorgeous too, there are so many shots that look clean, intentional, and just aesthetically pleasing. You can tell effort was put into how everything looks and feels, not just the storyline.
And the pacing? Surprisingly solid. It doesn’t drag for no reason, and it doesn’t rush through emotional scenes either. It keeps you interested without making you feel like you’re waiting forever for something to happen. The characters are genuinely lovable as well like, you actually care about them and their growth, and they’re not just there to fill space.
If you enjoyed shows like It’s Okay to Not Be Okay or Kill Me, Heal Me, there’s a really good chance you’ll love this too. It has that same mix of emotion, charm, and addictive “one more episode” energy. So yeah ignore the noise, press play, and enjoy!

"Your delusions are sad because they're beautiful"
Note: I talk about story details as they were essential to connecting my thoughts to the drama. I still tried to avoid heavy spoilers, though. Before anything else, if you’re hesitant to start this drama, I hope you try it first. Test the waters. You can always drop it if it’s not your type. I don’t think extreme negative or extreme positive reviews should be the deciding factor here. This drama depends a lot on what you value emotionally as a viewer.
Going into this drama, my expectations were shaped by the trailer: a slow-burn, slice-of-life romcom. And lots of yearning. Actually, emphasis on the yearning. To some extent, the drama does deliver that vibe, especially in its early stretch. But as the story unfolds, it also reveals a gap between what it wanted to be and what it actually was.
⁂ The first half vs the second half
The opening episodes gave me what I was expecting from the trailer. The pacing is comfortable, the banter easy, and the chemistry between the leads immediately readable. It has a solid romcom foundation, paired with a calm, scenic atmosphere despite the somewhat chaotic energy between the leads.
The second half is when we get to know Do Ra Mi better. When Do Ra Mi finally steps into the story not as an inner voice but as a physical presence, the drama shifts. Unfortunately, this makes a painfully clear shift in tone. Around this point did I realize, however, that the entire story revolved around the FL's inner struggle.
⁂ FL and her alter ego
One of the most important aspects of this drama was the FL’s mental health, especially her hallucinations coming to life (DID), and should've been emphasized more before the drama even started. After all, we realize that this isn’t a minor plot device, it’s in fact central to the story, the romance, and the overall.
I was honestly bummed this wasn’t clearer in the trailer, synopsis, or even the MDL tags. From the description alone, it’s easy to assume the “dual image” simply refers to an actress’s on-cam vs off-cam behavior.
Contrary to some complaints, I didn’t find the reveal abrupt, although the tonal shift in the second half is very evident. As early as ep 2, the hints began as inner voices and hallucinations, tied to past trauma, anxiety, and the pressure of popularity and public perception. Later on, when the FL accepted the alter ego's existence, it becomes clear that Do Ra Mi exists to carry emotions the FL couldn’t process on her own, and conceptually, this could've been one of the drama’s strongest plotlines.
⁂ The rom ....and the com?
The romance itself is a study in contradiction. This is not meant as a negative comment. It was quite entertaining to watch, even if it came with frustrations.
The ML is consistently gentle, thoughtful, and caring, yet also emotionally distant and cold when it comes to the female lead’s feelings. He clearly cares, sometimes too much, but he keeps drawing invisible lines. He’s painfully professional even when he clearly knows the FL’s feelings and is already being swayed himself. His words can be sharp, and he knows they are, yet he doesn’t soften them.
Their dynamic becomes a push and pulls of mutual concern and emotional misalignment. They banter, they communicate, they look after each other… and yet, they never quite speak the same emotional language for quite a while. His jealousy clashes with his emotional restraint, and while this does get addressed to an extent, I wish the drama explored his inner conflicts at least a bit deeply as it explored the FL’s.
What I thought this drama will be filled with was what it lacked: yearning and maybe angst. There was real potential for deeper yearning and angst, especially given the leads’ acting ability, but the drama least commits to it. Ironic how I felt the trailer had a lot stronger yearning than the entire drama. Emotions sometimes feel rushed or underdeveloped, making certain conflicts feel emotionally hollow rather than deep. I felt this especially when Do Ra Mi fully entered the story, I guess understandable because she exists because FL escapes the angst lol. I guess I should blame her for cutting the yearning short. The result is a romance that tells us it’s a painful scene without allowing us to actually feel that pain.
I'm more than okay that misunderstandings are resolved almost as soon as they are introduced, but there were moments that should've let the ache linger longer before the plot moves on. I only felt this after the "breakup" (because they weren't even together yet lol) before Do Ra Mi surfaced.
⁂ The attempt to add everything for every chance possible
I’m not entirely sure what direction the Hong sisters ultimately wanted to take with this drama. At times, it feels messy, not because of the ideas themselves, but because of how abruptly the story shifts tone and focus. One moment we’re grounded and reflective, the next we’re pulled into a comedy skit, then a psychological thriller, then something else entirely.
The alter ego’s goodbye, for instance, arrives with narrative importance but little emotional aftermath. Instead of sitting with the loss or allowing the FL to fully realize being her whole self again, the story quickly feeds us twists to add more problems to the ones barely even resolved.
By the final episodes, the drama introduces yet more twists that feel like they were always meant to matter, but never fully had the space to unfold. There were answers, yes, but also a sense that some mysteries were solved too late to resonate as deeply as they could have had. Maybe it would've been the better choice to leave certain things unanswered.
⁂ Final thoughts
One of the drama’s strongest ideas is stated outright by Mr. Kim, the ML's novelist friend and our second half cupid: everyone has their own personal language, and misinterpretation is inevitable when we assume others speak ours. This theme echoes throughout the series, not just between the leads, but also with the side characters' own stories, and even within the female lead herself.
Although I spoke a lot of what I saw were the cons, the drama isn’t without its strengths. The banter remains consistently charming. The dialogue occasionally lands with surprising emotional clarity, and there are conversations I still remember fondly: the aurora metaphor, the kitchen wordplay, and a few of the quiet moments that briefly captured what this drama could have been at its best.
At its core, this drama did touch on the themes I was looking for. While these ideas weren’t explored as deeply or as satisfyingly as I had hoped, there were moments where they still resonated. Moments where I paused and reflected. In the end, this is a drama I'll choose to remember closer to the feeling that its trailer promised than the story it ultimately told.

Healing kdrama
Can This Love Be Translated? was a very healing and funny drama for me. It helped me get through a hard time, and I’ll always be grateful for that. I really liked the actors, especially Go Youn Jung’s acting—her emotions felt so real that when she laughed, I laughed, and when she was sad, I felt it deeply too. The humor was light and comforting, and the story had a quiet warmth that stayed with me. Definitely a drama I’ll remember. Was this review helpful to you?
A Gentle Slow-Burn to Start the Year
I actually really liked it. It felt fresh, like a perfect rom-com to start the year with. I kind of wish Netflix had released it over 2–3 weeks instead of dropping everything at once. The cinematography was really good, and if you’re into slow-burn romance, it’s definitely worth watching. I also liked how they portrayed dissociative identity disorder so well. Was this review helpful to you?

A new favorite!!
Can this love be translated? is such an amazing drama everyone has to watch. It follows an interpreter and a rising actress. The main lesson is that everyone has their own language that some may not understand, but it doesn't mean they can't learn it. All actors were great! Despite feeling bad for Hiro for not getting the girl he liked, I'm happy for the main couple. In my fantasies, maybe there will be a romance between Nanami and him as well... I also like how everyone was on good terms after this! I guess we'll never know how the meeting with Muhee's mother went, so it's like a happy open ending. I recommend this as a breath of fresh air!!!Was this review helpful to you?

we all have our own language ?
I really wanted to love this kdrama… and I did, but differently. At first it was perfect, I loved it so much that I already thought It would become my favorite drama. What could go wrong? My two favorite actors, beautiful cinematography, cute love sceens, but on episode 6 it got strange? As a psycology student i really wished they made her mental disorder more understandable and not just to have it as a “translator to her trauma”. I mean in reality you would immediately go to psychiatrist, because she had a split, second personality and this is very serious. But this is not reality but a show so. Anyways, thats not the only thing that bothered me. I found it difficult to understand what they were saying, some of their discussions were just too vague, at least for me. Especially at the end of the ep 6. But i guess that’s also a point, bcs he was getting problems with understanding her, so we also had to? Also, I felt like ep 12 was already kinda unnecessary, they just wanted to make EVERYTHING clear😆*spoiler* making her parents still alive felt very needless. I love how thay made Hiro grow up though out the series, he became a real man, love you Hiroo💕 The chemistry was good, acting- perfect, cinematography- IMMACULATE , actually insane, a very serious topic was packed and explained beautifully, the love “triangle” wasn’t really annoying, so overall i would say it was good, like really good. The thing is that I was expecting something much more different, this crazy Do Rami part was unexpected 😆 I definitely need a rewatch to understand everything better and deeper. Anyways, I love it and its a must watch!! 💗💗🍀Was this review helpful to you?
The best kdrama for me this year!!
After a long kdrama slump this drama brought me back to it! I was actually anticipating this drama since long n it didn't disappoint me.. i totally loved it. The starting episodes were sooo sooo good, i binge watched first 6 episodes in one go till late night. Though the later episodes were a bit slow n I didn't get why they were breaking up again n again, I still loved it n would definitely recommend it as the drama I loved this year!! N not to forget I loved all the casts in it, also special mention to the 2nd lead, the Japanese actor, he was so swoonworthy ;), I almost got 2nd lead syndrome becos of his ckt development by the end, if it wasn't for a better ML cktwise n actorwise😊9/10 for me. Oh n I m so impressed that KSH learned n mastered three different languages for this! I was so awestruck! Last but the least, the FL, GYJ did such an amazing job of portraying two different personalities n she is so pretty, this is my first drama of her n I m won over!! Soo altogether a wonderful experience, definitely rewatching! A solid 9/10 for me😊!!
