A dark romance that hit as hard as crashing waves, yet felt as gentle as a sea breeze
It is rare for me to enjoy a dark romance in my 20s. Maybe when I was younger, I would enjoy anything as long as it was BL. As time passed by, I began to value quality over quantity and gravitated toward stories that felt more life-affirming rather than villain-driven. Yet this drama has many of the negative aspects I usually avoid, and I still ended up loving it.Fan Xiao and Shu Lang’s story is truly distinct. They are the embodiment of yin and yang. President Fan, the rich, cold-hearted, and obsessive man, meets the gentle and kind Director You. Cunning is Fan Xiao’s ultimate weapon, and his plans slowly begin to bear fruit when Shu Lang becomes addicted to his “matchstick,” eventually allowing Fan Xiao to take Shu Lang away from Lu Zhen. This is only the beginning of Fan Xiao’s madness.
One of the most beautiful aspects of this drama is its title, To My Shore. It reflects love, comfort, and Fan Xiao’s reason for living, having Shu Lang by his side. After Fan Xiao’s traumatic experience with a tsunami, which led to his mother’s death, he bumped into SHu Lang, who became his source of comfort. Ironically, Fan Xiao later becomes the storm that disrupts Shu Lang’s once-peaceful life.
Shu Lang has his own tragic backstory: being orphaned, adopted, bullied, losing his adoptive mother, raising an ungrateful stepbrother, and building his life and title from nothing with no one by his side. Despite all of this, Shu lang grows into a fine man with a heart of gold. I would do everything to protect him.
And then there’s the King of Manipulation himself, Fan Xiao. It was devastating when Shu Lang discovered that his boyfriend was the mastermind behind everything that had gone wrong in his life. The scene where Shu Lang cries alone in his bedroom while Fan Xiao and Lu Zhen stand outside was absolutely heartbreaking. From that point on, misfortunes keep crashing down on Shu Lang, all planned and planted by Fan Xiao.
But this is a dark romance. And for a dark romance to work, it must be carried by talented actors, and this one absolutely succeeds. I was deeply invested in every single episode, thanks to the powerful performances of Hao Yi Ran and Yun Qi. They truly brought Shu Lang and Fan Xiao to life. Their emotional delivery was always on point.
Fan Xiao’s redemption arc was a chef’s kiss. Watching him completely fall apart after Shu Lang left was painful yet satisfying. He paid the price for everything he did and genuinely regretted his actions. I’m glad I stayed until the end, because after witnessing all the evil he committed, forgiving him was not easy, especially from Shu Lang’s perspective. Still, the story’s progression made it feel earned.
This drama does not romanticize toxic relations. Instead, it explores giving someone a chance after genuine growth and change. That said, forgiveness is never easy, and it is also okay not to forgive. What matters most is choosing what brings peace, making decisions that align with both your heart and your mind.

When toxic love meets irresistible chemistry
The storyline itself feels familiar. However, the intense chemistry between the main leads kept me fully engaged from the very beginning. Their chemistry together is really phenomenal. The flirting, kinky talk, love biting are so hot. This kind of tension is something I rarely encounter in mainstream Chinese romcoms these days, which makes this drama stand out.What works for me:
- The performances are undoubtedly the strongest appeal of the drama. Their chemistry is undeniable, natural yet electric, and the intensity they bring to their interactions feels raw, immersive, and extremely sizzling.
- From episodes 1 to 10, the pacing is tight and engaging, rarely feeling draggy. While the overarching theme may not be entirely original, the main characters are relatively well-developed. Their motivations, emotional struggles, and gradual growth arcs add depth to the narrative, preventing it from feeling shallow, making the story feel more complete and emotionally grounded.
- The cinematography is another highlight. Emotionally laden scenes are beautifully framed and thoughtfully directed, enhancing the emotional resonance rather than overpowering it. The visual language complements the storytelling well, making key moments feel intimate, poignant, and visually memorable.
What doesn’t work for me
- On a personal level, I didn’t enjoy the repeated references to Buddha and Bodhisattva. While I understand their symbolic and thematic purpose within the story, these elements didn’t resonate with me and occasionally felt unsettling.
- I felt Episodes 11 to 13 were quite draggy. By episode 10, Fan Xiao had already been established as possessive, manipulative, and deeply toxic. The emotional damage he inflicted on You Shu Lang and Lu Zhen had already pushed my tolerance to its limit. The introduction of the mental “kidnapping” arc further crossed a line, making his character feel irredeemable to me. Because of this, I struggled to accept Shu Lang’s return to him. The lack of focus on Fan Xiao’s transformation makes it difficult to understand his choice. Perhaps it’s lust, or something “written in their stars,” but I'm not getting this kind of love on personal level. I believe the drama would have benefited from scaling back some of Fan Xiao’s manipulative behaviours in these episodes and reallocating that screen time to explore his transformation, remorse, and growth later on. Given how rushed the ending feels, this shift could have better prepared the audience (at least for me) for the HE, making his eventual redemption more believable and emotionally resonant.
Final thoughts
If you are unable to tolerate toxic or dangerous love dynamics, this show may not be for you. Of course, there is no clear boundary between right and wrong here, and the narrative reflects the uncomfortable reality that such toxic behaviours do exist. Ultimately, these are two wounded souls who perhaps find in each other the means to confront, or mend their old scars.
That said, it’s still worth a watch for the sizzling chemistry.

not for everyone
the mystery aspect of the story kept me hooked from the episode 8 and foward. however the overall story of them is not my thing, i didnt liked that the male lead(fan xiao) lied all the time and how he behave most of the time, he did changed at the very end, but the weird feeling remained. i hoped at the end MC (shoulamg) became the top to change the dinamic of the relacionship.Was this review helpful to you?

I really didn't expect to finish watching this series with a smile on my face and a warm feeling in my heart ...I loved the atmosphere of it, the lighting in some scenes was surprisingly exquisite and the love scenes are beautifully choreographed. The plot wasn't only angsty but also exciting and unpredictable (I was always surprised what schemes Fan Xiao pulled to manipulate Shulang)
It would go to onto my favorite list if not for the biggest flaw. The acting. None of the actors were even half decent, they were all pretty bad at acting. The worst of all was Fan Xiaos actor X_X. This character is so extremely complicated, it requieres very good subtle acting skills and he couldn't even get out basic reactions lol. Realistically its a 5 but it was still an emotional roller coaster to me so I gave it a 7 for the "vibes"
I hope in the future this gets a remake with better actors.

Another rapist storyline
im enjoying it so far alot, but what is with chinese dramas and their obsession with rapist storylines?? Normally watching BL Id want to root for the main couple, but in this case im just hoping it all gets exposed and would prefer a tragic ending than a rapist getting their happily ever after….Was this review helpful to you?
Sadistic and Dramatic
This is one of those drama where you figure what the end game must be so you are left wondering at each step how the story is supposed to get there lol.Fan Xiao is so sadistic that I'm not sure I understand how anything can bring him and Shulang back together.
But anyways it's very interesting and the actors are doing a good job.

My favorite BL ofall time
Well, this show is simply perfect-Chemistry is insane !Story is engaging and will make you sit on the edge! It makes you stressed, happy, sad, happy, and satisfied.
The acting is very good, and the couple really suite each other (this is vital for me when choosing BL dramas).
Both leads are strong and bold (I hate series with weak and childlike bottoms who act like morons).
In this series, both leads have bold personalities, and the top is very charismatic (toxic yes but also charismatic) while bottom is very handsome, delicate, and beautiful but powerful at the same time.
Direction and cinematic features are also great.
I have a habit of skipping scenes while watching series, but for this one I never skipped any- I even rewatched them.
Also, why do people keep saying it's a rapist story? Until now there are no rapes. Its dark romance, so of course there is manipulation and lies. Sorry, but what about BL shows with "you must pay with your body" themes, which are all over the platforms? With dumb bottoms who do not get a job but easily sign a contract to pay with their bodies for stuff?

Don’t listen to the haters, absolutely obsessed!!
I was hesitant to watch this drama reading some of the reviews, but I learned through my larger list of dramas, that some of them are unjustified.I personally like that dark side of it, after all, it is a drama, a fictional story that shouldn’t be taken so seriously. Fan Xiao is very intriguing, his manipulation, games made me want to watch the next episodes with curiosity and I was always wondering if he at any point was genuine or just messing around. Sometimes he left his guard down, and others it felt like another manipulation. At the same time, Lang doesn’t seem that genuine as well, I was also wondering if unexpectedly he was playing games as well. Nevertheless this drama serves a lot, the tension, the chemistry between the main leads is really good, and the story is not boring at all, I cant wait to see how it unfolds.

Great story
Still watching ‘To my shore’ as not all episodes are available, watched to episode nine although number ten will be available tonight.I’m thoroughly enjoying this story and can’t wait to watch the rest, great actors all around. I feel the love between the two leads, I wish all episodes were released together.

Finished watching the 4 eps and OMG !! this bl is gonna top other manipulative MLs from recent cdramas. I thought no one could beat ABO Desire Mr Hua but this drama proved me wrong!I can't believe Mr. Fan did that to Director You!! The actor who plays Mr. Fan is fantastic! Really both the MLs are Psychos in their own way 🤣🤣 the question remains who's gonna top whom now lol
