Good story, good execution. Heartwarming without trying too much!

Ive never been a Yoon Kye Sang fan before until now. In this series he showed how great an action star he can be. Im looking forward to watching all his other series that I have never seen before.

What i liked:
1. The story is very grounded to the idea of a good asian neighborhood, where everyone knows everyone and is always in each other's businesses.
2. The cast is great. A lot of overacting and underacting at times. It really felt like watching real-life neighbors. I also love the diverse characteristics of each characters and what each ones bring to the table.
3. Great action scenes and choreography especially those with YKS.
4. The bromance between Choi Gang and Byeong Nam
5. The father-daughter dynamics of Choi Gang and Do Yeon.

What needs improvement:
1. The supposed to be terror attacks werent really terrorizing at all. Big explosions werent really big, if anything they are actually underwhelming. I would chalk it up and assume it has to do with budget constraints because those explosions needs a lot of extra time in special effects to make them more terrorizing and believable.
2. I dont quite understand the idea that civilians are taking charge of police/military operations.
3. How come the assemblywoman came out scotch free when in fact she is one of the most guilty among the public officials?
4. There were a couple of characters with gay undertones but are really not explored. It would have been a nice step forward.
5. Weak villain.

Its a very enjoyable watch, i hope a lot more people can see it. Overall its an 8.5!

Your friendly neighborhood heroes in a perfect blend of comedy and action

When I stumbled upon Heroes Next Door, I was intrigued by the plot and the fact that Yoon Kye Sang and Jin Seon Kyu were lead roles solidified my decision to give the drama a try. And while I expected this series to be to my liking, I am beyond delighted to say that I enjoyed it much more than I anticipated.

The premise of the story had caught my attention from the synopsis. I really like this type of stories of ordinary people who find themselves entangled in complicated situations and are here to save the day. The drama establishes the ground for the mystery and political aspect pretty early on and I was more than eager to find out who was behind the bombing incidents and what were their motives.

At first glance, our main characters appear to be ordinary people who want to protect their families and neighborhood. But soon enough, it's revealed that this couldn't be further from the truth. All of the main characters were reserve special forces veterans. A former member of the JDD lethal special operations unit, a former HID counter-terrorism unit member, a former special operations instructor, a former cyber operations soldier and a former mortar unit member made for a hectic yet competent team which no one should look down to - particularly the people who were responsible for the bombs.

The characters were the heart of the show and the actors greatly contributed to this. From the very first episodes, I was enthralled by their interactions and the chemistry between them was so organic. The performances were more than serviceable, all actors did their part very well and they never came across as awkward. They embodied their characters perfectly and they made sure to make them as memorable as possible.

The bond between the team made it so easy to fall in love with them. Their small banterings made me giggle and yet, despite some disagreements here and there, they always stuck together no matter what. Through their relationship and through the depiction of other dynamics between the secondary characters in the neighborhood, the drama highlighted the significant role communities can play in human relationships. It's vital to surround ourselves with people who we can trust and rely on for their support. Human bonds are always strong and our heroes proved that no matter how dangerous the circumstances were, they would never abandon their group, nay, family.

One of my most favourite dynamics was the bond between Choi Kang and his family, particularly his daughter, Do Yeon. Their interactions made my heart melt, they were just so cute together! Park Ji Yoon was simply adorable, she stole the show whenever she appeared and her on-screen chemistry with both Son Ji Hoon and Yoon Kye Sang was so good. I adored their small family and I looked forward to their scenes.

Yoon Kye Sang was undoubtedly one of the highlights. I got introduced to him in The Winning Try and I'm happy to report that I loved his character in this drama too. He shifted from an outgoing, goofy insurance investigator to a ruthless ex soldier so effortlessly. The way his expression would turn cold and stern made me both scared and excited for what was about to come. He shined in this role, comedy is definitely his strong element but I also had a great time watching him in the action scenes.

Kye Sang's performance added some more depth to Choi King's character, too. Just from the look of his safe or the tone of his voice whenever his family and friends got threatened, you could tell how worried he was about their safety. Having experienced great tragedy at JDD forces, he had to deal with PTSD and the lingering fear of losing the ones he loved. I appreciated this side of Kang's character and Kye Sang did a good job portraying his distress and caution.

The duo between Choi Kang and Kwak Byeong Nam was one of the funniest relationships and one of my most beloved dynamics too. Even though they got off on the wrong foot, they quickly became close friends who not only respected each other but were also willing to risk their lives for each other. They had so many funny moments (I still burst out in laughter when I think about the middle fingers scene) and the actors matched perfectly.

I was already familiar with Jin Seon Kyu from other projects and once again, he didn't disappoint. His character was very interesting and watching him displaying his craftsmanship was fascinating. He too was one of the actors I particularly enjoyed watching alongside Kyo Sang.

Another character I especially liked was Jung Nam Yeon. At first I was quite sceptical with her depiction as a serious and threatening woman but I quickly loved her character. She deeply cared for her family and she always expressed her concern in her own way. She was strong and independent and was capable of throwing a punch or two, which made her cooler to watch. And I adored her relationship with her husband, she scolded him yet cared about him and he admired her for her skills instead of feeling jealous over her capabilities.

The writers did a marvelous job combining comedy with action. Most jokes landed smoothly and the fighting scenes added the necessary amount of thrill. There was a perfect balance for the majority of the series and neither the funnier bits nor the action parts outweighed each other. Each episode made me laugh so hard during some scenes while others had me watch my screen in anticipation of what would happen next. That being said, if the tone of the story required it, the drama would become more serious. The funeral sequence on episode 3 brought some tears in my eyes and Sullivan's interaction with Do Yeon on episode 10 made me quite emotional too.

I shan't forget to talk about the amazing soundtrack. It was energetic, vibrant and suitable for this genre. I have been listening to both UDT and Higher on repeat for the past weeks and each time I heard the first notes on the background, I would instantly become pumped up and ready to head into action. I could literally feel the adrenaline rush consume my body. This is a great example of how to make a simple yet memorable soundtrack, one that can be easily associated with the drama and match its vibes.

Although I had an amazing time watching Heroes Next Door, I must admit that the writing fell short in some areas. While I acknowledge that the story was developed rather smoothly for a 10 episodes drama, there was room for improvement which would have made the drama even better.

While the series emphasized Choi Kang's trauma, it didn't go deeper than that. There were some flashbacks and illusions but overall, it wasn't addressed properly in my opinion. It could have been more fleshed out in order to understand even better the lengths of it and how it had shaped his current state and his navigation in life after his retirement from JDD. Furthermore, the rest of the characters could have been explored some more besides the traits that distinguished them. Jeong Hwan was in my opinion the most underutilized character from the main group, he should have been even more involved in the story and his feelings (especially after the death of My song) could have been addressed more.

My biggest issue was definitely the villain, Sullivan. I understand what the writer was aiming for but the execution was lackluster. Sullivan is supposed to be a heartbroken father who wants to avenge his daughter, whose killer hadn't received proper punishment. His anger and resentment towards the people behind this was understandable but having him go to great lengths, such as killing innocent people or trying to do so, undermined his trauma.

I'm all for having morally questionable characters. I actually love this type of heroes. But the thing is, the drama couldn't decide if Sullivan would be portrayed as a deranged villain or a wronged father. For the most part, he was painted as the former and thus, it was quite difficult to sympathize with him. The attempt to explore his motives on the last episode didn't do him much favour. I wish the writers had handled this character better, his backstory was interesting and his motives could have been explored from a different angle.

The rest of the villain could have also been better. They appeared to be too cartoonish and even though their actions were horrible, they didn't appear to be that intimidating. Which again, it's understandable, the series wanted to portray them from a more comedic point of view through their interaction but they should have been presented from a more serious standpoint.

The ending, while decent, could have been better. Like the writer's previous work, Shin's Project, Heroes Next Door suffered from the same problem of having a disjointed pacing at the finale. The last episode dragged in some parts and there were some moments which felt like fillers. The conclusion to the villains was quite unsatisfactory. I didn't like that Sullivan killed himself and that the corruption behind her death hadn't been exposed properly. I get that in real life many crimes will be shoved under the rug, but the drama brushed this off, without addressing the issue properly. There was a poor attempt with the journalist trying to raise awareness of Charlotte's death but it didn't hold any significance. As for the other villains, they were let go pretty much lightly which left a bitter taste in my mouth. All of them should have been received proper punishments but alas, since this doesn't happen in real world, I had high expectations even for a fictional story...

Choi Kang's decision to shoot Sullivan multiple times even after giving him the beating of his life was...a choice. Given that Sullivan had threatened innocent lives and had kidnapped Do Yeon, some level of frustration was more than understandable. But having Choi Kang shoot Sullivan, even when Sullivan expressed his regret of not exposing the corruption seemed irrational. If anything, Choi Kang could have been the one to look more into it. Throughout the drama, he was on his way to unveil the crime and corruption among the Ministry of Defence, so him doing that to Sullivan felt too exaggerated and out of character.

All in all, Heroes Next Door was a brilliant action comedy that it's easily digestible and entertaining. It's very underrated and although it's not extraordinary, it could offer something lighthearted and thrilling to watch. I am very happy for not missing it out and if there's a possibility for a second season, you better believe I'll tune in.

Amazing neighborhood shenanigans. Close to perfect blend of comedy + action!

This is one of my favorites of the year! I want more of this kind or similar.

Every character nailed their part, even the minor ones! The story while simple enough, is written in a way that was refreshing, touching and so so so funny even with some inconsistencies and plot holes! I laugh out loud in many scenes through all the episodes.

The ML was on point in his delivery of a former bad*** agent, who now simply wants to be a neighborhood dad and friend. That brings me to the part i loved the most: The friendship and interaction amongst the characters was very good, they all had great chemistry and ...did I mention FUNNY together. I truly had a blast watching them and you will too.

Action and comedy combined.

If you're only interested in romance, please don't even think about watching this. But if you're a fan of action, this series will make you very happy. It was the only K-drama I eagerly awaited every week.

Plenty of comedy and plenty of action. Yes, I can't deny there were some minor logical flaws in places, but the cast, characters, and the excitement of the series took center stage, so I personally didn't mind at all.

Watching Yoon Kye Sang was a visual feast in itself; he's definitely an action man. I'd love to see him in more action dramas. He was also very sweet in his role as a good family man.

The market couple were very cute. Overall, I loved every character in the series. They were all so much fun, and while watching them, I kept thinking, Which one of you will say, "Hey, I'm a soldier" or "I have a military background"?😺 Because the neighborhood was fully equipped, it had everything you could possibly want 😄

To summarize what I mean, I'll give you three reasons to watch this series: firstly, it's perfect for unwinding; secondly, it will make you feel warm and cozy thanks to the neighborhood characters; and thirdly, the OST that plays at the end of the series was really, really energizing! 😅
(Note: Please excuse my poor English.):

Action-packed, fun, found-family-esque drama

Slow progression in the first two episodes (I'll admit, I fast-forwarded a ton- dare I say, I barely watched it lol) but the plot does pick up and it becomes super interesting and action filled as the drama progresses.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching this drama the plot was interesting throughout and kept me entertained the whole time. I would say the wait for the two episodes each week was worth it!

As for the villain part of the drama and the ending... Sullivan's ending was a bit anti-climatic lol. I expected a bit more but it just died down pretty tamely. His character was not bad tho. He's a "calm" villain, rather than a psycho crazy one so that aspect made the drama unlike others. But I think because of this, his motive for the bombs were a bit inconsistent like you want justice for your daughter who got caught in a power play thing but like um wdym you just want to bomb up a town that you were born and abandoned in... It's just a bit confusing and its never explained well enough.

Anyway, it's still a good drama so because of the Sullivan stuff, I'm giving it an 8.5/10.

Side note: Na Eunjae pmo LOL like her character was so dumb and unserious like girl calm down now like you were technically the start of the problem to the whole bombing stuff like girl what

They teased us a bit with a few elements signalling to a second season so I hope that's the case!

No So Ordinary Neighbors

The drama was genuinely heartwarming and never tried too hard to appear relevant; instead, it focused on the organic bonding between neighbors, which was truly chef’s kiss. The storyline was simple yet perfectly executed, and the actors delivered strong, convincing performances throughout. I still don’t understand why the drama received such a low rating, as every episode felt like it passed in just twenty minutes. The comedy was well-structured and naturally integrated into the narrative, never feeling forced or out of place.

I rated the drama an 8.5 out of 10 primarily because Sullivan’s revenge arc lacked coherence and felt scattered. It wasn't really relevant to become an issue this big. I think the character needed a more depth for taking this kind of big revenge. Apart from this it was really enjoying.

Fun But Kind of Lacking

The plot has a strong premise, but the execution does not fully live up to it. The idea of former military members teaming up to stop a terrorist is compelling, yet the story takes too long to reach its central conflict. By the time the team is finally assembled, nearly three quarters of the series has already passed, which significantly weakens the pacing and overall momentum. The main villain is also absent for much of the show, making him feel underdeveloped. His motivations lack clarity and depth, which lessens the impact of the central threat.
Even accounting for the show’s comedic tone, some character choices are off putting. The tech character, in particular, comes across as creepy in the way he behaves toward the female agent, and this undercuts the humor rather than enhancing it. Still, the series remains somewhat enjoyable. The cast does the best they can with the material they are given, and their performances are largely what kept the show engaging enough to not completely lose interest.

Absolutely loved it

I started watching because I saw a clip of Namyeon disarming the bomb at the bus station and the comment section was saying how everyone is with military backgrounds so it caught my attention. Was honestly expecting light, comedy no nonsense because the main characters are not young lol but surprisingly it felt like watching a legit action-focused drama.

I love how the drama portrayed them as a very close-knit neighbourhood and everyone just knows everyone. It felt very heartwarming. Although the friendship between the five of them doesn't feel much, probably since it's more of a protectiveness towards their neighbourhood instead of the normal friendships between young people, but I especially like the hint of close friendship between Kang and Byeongnam. Besides Byeongnam's playful attitude, he cared about Kang and despite Kang showing like he wasn't listening to Byeongnam, he did follow Byeongnam's advice.

I was thinking maybe Jeonghwan would join them because he was Minseo's tutor and he just happened to be around the uncles (and aunt) at the right time. When I realized he would join them because Myeongo would die of an explosion, I was PRAYING for him to not die. The way Lee Jungha expressed his quiet despair over losing his close friend, only started crying when he was home alone, HURT my heart.

I know it was for the plot but it annoyed me to death that Doyeon had no stranger danger awareness lol. I want to criticize her so bad but she's a literal child so it's honestly just the reality on how children would act. But the fact that she took the ice cream by Sullivan JUST BECAUSE he said it was from Kang? Girl you could've been poisoned. And Kang or Yonghui are the ones who usually pick her up from school. WHY WOULD YOU GO WITH OLIVIA. Anyway.

One thing I hated is that, this is one of the dramas/movies that make you feel bad for hating the villain. It's one of the "he wasn't born a villain, the world just made him one" kind of thing. It's true though. I get why he did what he did. But I don't agree with his methods. He could have targeted only the people involved. But instead, he started bombings in a neighbourhood, which I still don't get why he chose Kiyun-si. The fact that he was adopted from a church in Kiyun-si made his choice even questionable because it's not like he has a grudge for the neighbourhood or anything. And why would he specifically target Kang? He claimed that he thought Kang would understood what he did. But by kidnapping Kang's daughter, did he not think that Kang would do anything to get her back? Just like what Sullivan would do anything for Charlotte.

? Overview

"Heroes Next Door" is a refreshing and entertaining action-comedy that posits a thrilling 'what-if' scenario: What if your quiet, ordinary neighbors were actually highly trained, retired special forces operatives?

The drama centers on a band of former special operations veterans living civilian lives in the cozy neighborhood of Changri-dong. When a series of mysterious and increasingly dangerous incidents—initially dismissed as simple accidents—threaten their families and community, these heroes step up. They don't fight for the nation or world peace, but for the safety of their block, proving that sometimes, the greatest duty is the one you have to your neighbors.

1. The greatest strength of the show is the dynamic between the main cast, particularly the unofficial reunion of actors Yoon Kye-sang (as Choi Kang, an ex-special forces agent turned insurance investigator) and Jin Seon-kyu (as Kwak Byeong-nam, the local youth association president). Their transition from initial friction to begrudging allies, and finally to a solid, hilarious team, is the heart of the show.
2. The drama expertly balances high-stakes action sequences with genuine, feel-good neighborhood comedy. Watching highly skilled operatives use their training to solve very "local" problems, often while juggling grocery bags or in their everyday clothes, provides great comedic relief without undercutting the tension.
3. The focus on protecting their own neighborhood makes the threat feel more personal and relatable than a typical global conspiracy. The supporting cast of ordinary neighbors also adds a warm, slice-of-life element to the thrilling plot.
4. Kim Ji-hyun shines as Jung Nam-yeon, a former Special Forces Unit instructor and current supermarket owner. Her no-nonsense attitude and combat skills are a highlight, ensuring the team is well-balanced.

"Heroes Next Door" is a highly enjoyable, fast-paced 10-episode series that delivers on its unique premise. It’s an easy and satisfying watch for those who enjoy action with a heavy dose of camaraderie and laughs. The fantastic chemistry of the ensemble cast and the fresh "local hero" concept elevate it beyond a standard action drama. If you're looking for a show that reminds you that heroes live among us—sometimes just disguised as a neighborhood mart owner or insurance salesman—you should definitely check this out.

Fun and Flawed

Heroes Next Door clearly tries to build on the same foundation as The Fiery Priest; a mix of comedy and action, with random people coming together as a squad. It’s funny, chaotic, and warm in its own way, even if it doesn’t reach the same highs.

One of the biggest strengths of the show is its cast. Yoon Kye-sang is especially well suited for comedic roles; he feels natural and effortless, never forced. The drama is filled with familiar supporting actors, and it genuinely feels like a show where supporting characters finally get their moment to shine.

What really makes the drama work, though, is the dynamic between the characters. There’s a strong sense of community throughout the show; these are ordinary people living boring lives, yet they have so much heart that they’re willing to risk themselves to protect others. That warmth is what carries the story.

Choi Kang slowly becoming an integral part of the group was especially heartwarming to watch. His friendship with Byeong-nam is hands down the best part of the show. They start off constantly at odds, but watching that turn into a sibling-like bond by the end felt very earned and emotional.

I also appreciated that the show opted for just 10 episodes. It knew its limits and wrapped things up without unnecessary dragging, which worked in its favor.

That said, the drama doesn’t really have those “I need to watch the next episode right now” moments. The pacing feels monotone at times, and while the show works with its limited possibilities, it doesn’t offer much beyond its core premise. Some storylines felt completely unnecessary, making you wonder why they were even included, and certain sections dragged more than they should have.

Sullivan’s revenge arc, in particular, didn’t make much sense and felt all over the place. On top of that, the “Khamas” mention and the decision to portray a brown Pakistani character as a suicide bomber was honestly wild and poorly thought out. It’s hard not to question whether anyone in the writing room stopped to think about how problematic that was.

Overall, Heroes Next Door is character-driven drama with a lot of heart, good chemistry, and decent humour. It’s not groundbreaking or particularly memorable, but it’s sincere and enjoyable as long as you go in with tempered expectations.

GIVE IT A TRY..10/10

Heroes Next Door is honestly such a good drama. Everything about it just works — the story, the characters, and the emotions. What stood out the most for me was the friendship and chemistry between the people living in the neighborhood. Their bond felt so warm and natural, like a real found family. Watching them slowly trust each other and come together was one of the best parts of the drama.
The humor is actually funny and makes the heavy moments easier to handle. I love dramas like this where there’s heart, teamwork, and emotions all mixed together.
The last episode completely broke me. The scene with Do yoon and Sullivan. I couldn’t stop crying. I felt so bad for both Sullivan and Charlotte.
Overall, this drama made me laugh, cry, and feel everything in between. I really hope there’s a season 2 because this story deserves to continue.

Ordinary Neighbors, Unexpected Heroes

So this drama is basically about a bunch of ordinary neighbors (and you will realize after some episodes they are not) who suddenly decide to take on a ridiculously powerful government body — and honestly, that setup alone is wild enough to make you curious. Acting-wise, everyone delivers. You’ll see supportive husbands and wives, brave residents who decide to protect their own when no one else will, and some genuinely heartwarming moments between parents and their kids.
But if you’re expecting a slow-burn love story… sorry, not happening here. 😂 Everyone is already married, so the romance meter is pretty much flat. This one focuses more on unity, community power, and that “we’re all in this together” vibe.
The idea behind the story is great, though I couldn’t fully relate to all parts of it. The music is minimal, but there are some fun action scenes to keep things moving. Plus, the drama surprisingly throws in humor at just the right moments — it’s not a comedy, but it does make you smile.
So if you want a no-romance, lightly funny, action-packed drama with a strong community feel, then Heroes Next Door might just be your pick.
