I just automatically expect historicals to have wonky pacing, so I figured the drama would swing back around to the suspense. And it's starting to by ep 14. It's feeling a little Agatha Christie. Nothing impressive, but there's mystery and suspense.
Like, remember, there was human trafficking and implied cannibalism in the first episode.
My guess is we'll revisit the human trafficking when ML gets his memory back? I hope so lol. We certainly can't be done with the wife murder case that got him "killed" in the first place. So I think the suspense will be back.
Also, some of the stuff you mentioned is a bit on the spoilery side, so you might wanna tag some of it so that no one accidentally stumbles upon it before watching.

Yup. I'm pretty sure the sisters who share the same mom are FL, 4th sister, and 6th sister. They refer to the 2nd sister as a different "branch" of the family, and the 3rd sister and the brother have the same mom, so that leaves the 5th sister. The drama hasn't gotten into anyone's mom yet though.
I wonder if the 5th sister's pretending to be blind too, but that would be lazy writing if she and the 6th sister were faking or exaggerating their disabilities.

We need more.

It was cute how ML, being the nosy mf that he is, hurried to save him. I can't tell you much, I ADORE RR moments like this, my BREAD AND BUTTER
AHAAAAAA!!! GIRL I WAS WAITING FOR YOU TO GET THERE!!!! It took me like thirty minutes to watch that scene because I kept rewinding! He was so precious and scandalized!! He's acting more like a monk than the dude who was almost a monk 😂 But 4th Sister was VICIOUS. She said: all that avoiding and you still fell into my grasp. My jaw dropped. It was this scene that made me sad she doesn't have a love interest, and isn't more central and fleshed out. I could totally see her being jealous of her boy cousin's feelings for FL, and bullying/humiliating him instead because she wants him to drop out of the husband tournament. Imagine her purposely scheming to make him lose, but then she gets worried when she sees someone else (aka Yang and He) actually trying to hurt him instead of just make him throw in the towel. Imagine her watching the challenges and freezing up, and getting angry because he's getting hurt for her sister, who she hates. YUMYUMYUMYUM!!!
During the scene where the scholar gets humiliated is also when I started really shipping him and the 5th sister because he previously thought she was just an innocent blind girl. I loved him getting to see her ugly side in that moment. The way the realization dawned on him was *chef's kiss*. Now I just hope the writing does them justice, but that might be stupidly optimistic of me considering it's already dropped the ball in a moderate way. It's not exploring what it needs to be exploring with them.

FL is incredibly strong and badass, though. So fiercely protective of those she loves and also of people in need of help, in general. She's very heroic for being a woman in Joseon. And ML? Oh, such a lovesick pup. He's so, so, so, so proud of his girlboss and will do and does anything for her. ANYTHING. They're so precious.
For a historical kdrama this was VERY RR. For RR in general, it was quite RR, I'm ngl. She protects him a lot, he's weak while she's strong (he gets stronger later), she's a grumpy black cat, and he's the sunshine clingy retriever, she's strong and resilient and he's emotional and sensitive, they take turns thinking they're not good enough for each other, but she also gets to yearn so damn much!!!!!! WE LOVE TO SEE WOMEN YEARN!!! Like it's a fun time.
And it also has an ADORABLE sister-in-law & brother-in-law dynamic that had my heart very full.

Me too. I was expecting it to be complicated and messy as rivaling siblings would be, but I was hoping it would be nuanced and maybe somewhat complex and varied. With each dynamic between the sisters feeling unique and fresh, and each sister having good and bad qualities, and not just a boring af "everyone against the perfect FL" bullcrap you get in typical harem dramas too. The only silver lining is that they're not fighting over men (yet).

From what I've gathered, they're also hating because they're not allowed to participate. Like in ep 7, the 4th sister literally tells her grandma that "idle hands are a devil's workshop," after repeatedly begging to be allowed to go into the field, so it kinda seems like they aren't allowed to participate, which, if not by FL, it must be by Grandma Rong. Which begs so many questions...

Maybe the others are cousins? Just like FL's girl cousin, whose mother married out of the family. Those who take in husbands raise their children to be siblings? FL, 4th, & 6th being the daughters of the eldest, and the others being the children of the following sisters? Maybe 5th sister is the daughter of a Rong son? Would explain why she has an inferiority complex... Born from a man in a matriarchy AND a maid? Oof.... That's rough.
I just have to wonder... where are all their parents? How come no one lived?? You can't tell me they all died escorting goods to the capital. No single parent is alive? If it were just the two then I'm like, okay, that tracks, but if there's at least 4 sets of parents... it starts becoming harder to explain...
Also, did the brother's character bother you too, or was that just me? Ugh, what a waste of an interesting character. As the only son in the family, you would think he would be a unique and interesting perosn, spoiled and pampered kinda like the only daughter in an all-boys family would be. Cherished but as a pretty vase, not really allowed to do a whole lot. I would understand if it isn't quite the same because the outside world is still very patriarchal, so he would probably still have some macho ambitions, but I think they could've played into this a lot better than just making him a bland dumbass like in every other drama and then not showing him again.
I think a personality more similar to FL's not-cousin would've suited him. Spoiled and pampered, but still scheming. He could then help his sister secure power in the family by helping her plot rather than being an absolute nuisance and crybaby (I could totally see him being Grandma Rong's fav grandchild because he's just 'so innocent and sweet' and him totally using that to his and his sister's advantage while sending devious smirks at his other sisters). And/or he could have an interesting storyline with maybe an outside, poorer merchant woman scheming to get into the Rong family and take over the business in some way, using him as her entry point. I think making him somewhat of a homme fatale/green-tea would've be INSANELY good. But if not that, just making him a spoiled brat that enjoys the luxurious life of not having to ever work, while having everything served to him, but in a more RR way than is usually the case. He could get a kick out of getting close with his future brothers-in-law and sowing discord. But idk, he doesn't really show up a whole lot, so maybe they'll do more with him later, though I doubt it'll be anything remotely interesting.

Hahahaha I'll try most things if they have an interesting premise, and if they grab me, they grab me. I've just noticed over the years that sci-fi tends to grab me the least, so it's technically one of my least favorite genres even though I don't dislike it by any means. I like Arrival, Dark Angel, and the Alien franchise a lot (with the exception of Alien vs Predator). As far as sci-fi-esque Asian dramas, I liked Duel and Awaken. Basically, I love a human experiment plot, but not necessarily interplanetary politics, so when I think about it our sci-fi preferences kind of align with our Asian drama preferences lol (which is pretty cool). In case you haven't noticed, I love finding trends in myself and others.

I kind of pegged you as someone who enjoyed stuff that made your brain hurt in a good way—especially since we have such amazing conversations (I've noticed there's an overlap of people who like feeling their brains throb and good conversationalists LOLLLL. That's not to say the two are mutually exclusive, just an observation).
I love finishing a drama/movie, and sitting through the credits as I stare into space and try to rationalize what I've just seen, the characters' motivations, the themes, how it relates to me and my life...etc.

Like imagine she goes back to the capital about twoish years later (6 YEARS IS TOO LONG PLS) and she finds him all helpless and pitiful and upsetti at her (maybe recently got whumped due to his superior officer or smth, he could've just had a good flogging or smth, idk) and she gets super worried about him so she takes him back home to recover. He gives her the silent treatment but is still clingy (maybe even more clingy cuz he isn't feeling well. Girl, can you imagine him falling asleep on her shoulder while in the carriage? Augh, that'd be so good and RIP bro's neck). Then he starts helping the prefect out around their hometown and eventually requests to be transferred there permanently. CJ ends up accepting his decision and also being grateful that she gets to keep him close and protect him <3
This is perfect! She could go to the palace because the Queen or a high-ranking concubine has heard of the products she sells, and requests her presence to see and discuss said products. Cen Jin doesn't want to go because she knows there's a chance she'll run into Li Wu, but you can't exactly refuse the Queen/a royal. So she goes, and after a successful meeting with the Queen, bumps into Li Wu for the first time in two years. He flinches like he's in pain, and he's furious with her. The interaction doesn't go well, and as she's leaving she overhears he's recently been flogged by a superior. She rushes back into the palace, and manages to convince him to come back to her mansion so he can recover. And yes, he falls asleep in the carriage with his head on Cen Jin's shoulder ❤️❤️❤️
