More titles? Other dramas as good, with several females?I will also read your comments below to make a list.
=> Jewel in the Palace --> great female lead, complex second female lead, interesting older female characters, endearing supporting female characters => Painter of the Wind --> crossdressing female lead and the gisaeng whom she is fascinated and attracted to => The Princess's Man --> a noble lady (daughter of king's brother) and a princess, they have a complicated relationship in the show => Hwang Jini --> drama is about gisaengs, female lead is a gisaeng and her relationship with her gisaeng mentor is a strong part of the show => Dong Yi --> king's wife and concubines all play important parts in this drama => Jang Ok Jung Live in Love --> same as Dong Yi except the female lead in this drama is the villain in Dong Yi. Both dramas are created by different people but both feature the same historical characters. This drama gives a more sympathetic portrayal to the historical character often portrayed as the villain in the retellings of this story. => The Red Sleeve --> while there is more focus on female lead and her romance with the king, court ladies and their lives heavily feature in this drama because female lead is a court lady. Female lead's friendship with her same-age courtladies are very endearing.
I did like Moon Lovers but I’m not a big fan of it unlike this one
brilliant of you to point of the amnesia of jung mi sook. I never thought of it that way before. I have mixed feelings about the amnesia trope (though I'm okay with it---> it's not as overly used as in Innocent Man) but you explaining Jung Mi Sook also experienced amnesia due to trauma makes Hyun Soo's amnesia have more sense.
Lemme add kairos cuz y'all don't like to watch quality stuff. Also, Scarlett heart ryeo is the dumbest possible…
I like it (especially LJG and Kang Ha Neul acting) but it's overrated. I think people rank it high among sad dramas because it was probably their first sageuk that didn't have a happy ending for the main couple. I haven't watched all sageuks, but my impression was Scarlet Heart Ryeo did appeal to people who generally avoid sageuks because of the cast appealing to younger audiences. The sad ending sageuks prior to Scarlet Heart Ryeo usually don't star actors that the younger audiences back then would watch.
1. Emperor of the Sea --> all the good important characters are dead at the end of the drama (except the female lead). It is because of the ending of this show in particular that I don't think any more recent sageuk has sadder deaths than this one. Despite this depressing ending however, the death of the female soldier (love interest of male lead's best friend) is the one that got me the most. There are sadder deaths in kdrama but her death was just the most sad for me. For all the best friend's sufferings (he was with the male lead throughout every difficulty he had to overcome) plus the fact that he grew up without any parents (unlike male lead), his first taste of real happiness that is for himself was meeting, falling in love, and getting married with this female soldier. The female soldier herself grew up with any family and was content on serving the mistress (future wife of male lead) she was serving until she met the male lead's best friend. They were the most sweet and genuine couple in this show. Her death was so depressing because she had just confirmed to her new husband her pregnancy then she was brutally killed (on the day of her mistress's wedding to the male lead too). It's hard to see the depression of her widowed husband (male lead best friend) upon losing his wife and baby. 2. The Red Sleeve - this was based on a true story, so the female lead dying here is more depressing than any other sageuk where female lead dies. Not only did the female lead die but all their children together died too (I have such a weakness for women dying along with all her children, making their partners extra depressed). This is ranked higher than Yi San since the drama didn't show much of the male lead having any semblance of happiness after female lead's death. 3. Yi San - same thing as Red Sleeve. Lower ranked because the drama did show the male lead with his accomplishments after female lead's death (it's some semblance of happiness for him after she died). 4. Queen Seon Deok - death of the selfless maid that cared for the female lead as well as her impossible love is too tragic. The tragic figure Bidam's death as well. 5. The Princess's Man - when I rewatched last year, I almost cried when male lead realized his family was dying. Also, the death of the selfless husband of the second female lead was so brutal and depressing.
There's also an actress caught in propofol years before. i think she did get punished for her actions but was able to come back, hope yoo ah in too as well. He's very talented and I don't believe him to be a bad person, especially as he didn't hurt anyone but himself with this case.
Rewatching this again, I know this was my childhood but having rewatched the first four episodes again just tonight, I think this show still holds up. New people watching this show should understand this will be quite different to the recent sageuks aired nowadays.
Her movie is supposed to be sir this year. But I hope moon chae won doesn't disappear again for 3 years 🥹
Since I want her to the star of her drama (not support for the male lead) I want an actor who is less popular than her. People like Yoon Hyun Min or Seo Ji Hoon (her male leads in Mama Fairy and the Woodcutter). If they need to be more popular or more acclaimed than her Kim Nam Gil (or Yoo Ah In if he overcomes his recent scandal clean), I like him since Queen Seon Deok. I also want a reunion with Lee Joon Gi (but hopefully after she has an acclaimed drama where she’s the main event). I’m not a fan of many of the super popular male lead actors but I’ll watch them if Chae Won acts with them. Lee Sun Kyun is someone I did like even before Payback (due to Parasite movie) even if I didnt follow him much so I appreciate him and Chae Won working together.
I love Sense and Sensibility, thank you for that movie. Searching this guy's filmography, I feel like his films are very important to the filmography of actors as randomly grouped together as Kate Winslet, Zhang Ziyi, Michelle Yeoh, Heath Ledger, Tang Wei
Choi Su Jong cast as main lead Kang Gam Chan! https://tenasia.hankyung.com/tv-drama/article/2023022079904
I was expecting a younger male lead, but Choi Soo Jong is okay. I like him in Emperor of the Sea, though I was more blown away with Song Il Gook in that show. Hope I’ll be more sold with him here.
Just finished, I like it. Really refreshing to see Kim Ok Vin, Yoo Teo and Kim Ji Hoon in roles very different from what I've seen them before. (Ok Vin and Teo were great in Arthdal Chronicles while Ji Hoon is amazing in Flower of Evil)
