Watching for Lee Se Young, I’m curious about her (as I plan to watch Crowned Clown but wasn’t able to do it 2 years ago). I also find this historical drama to be on a more serious side.
An edit of the child cast is good, but as always they only put in the Yeo Jin Goo, Kim Yoo Jung, Kim So Hyun trio. I just wish people don’t forget Lee Tae Ri (young prince yangmyung) just because he’s not as popular as the trio. Along with the trio, he’s the child actor here who’s a child version of the four main leads.
Just finished my rewatch. after so many years. This still remains as one of my favorite historical kdramas. I understand why some gets annoyed with the female lead as she’s immature in the beginning. But her character grew to ge a strong woman, plus she owns up to her mistakes in the beginning. Her strength is seen not only in protecting her lover but also trying her best to do what is right in any way she can as the series progresses. Moon Chae Won is a great actress, and this role is one of her best ones (I may seem bias as she’s one of my fave actresses, but I think I’m not, since she has some roles, particularly her romcom movies, that I find a bit underwhelming). I can’t think of anyone better than her which can express really well her emotional lines (especially the lines that declare her love to the male lead). I also love her confrontational scenes with her father, them facing together is really amazing. The rest of the cast are really good. Park Shi Hoo, Song Jong Ho, Lee Min Woo all good in their respective characters. Special shoutout to Hong Soo Hyun and Kim Yeong Cheol, as I found their performances to be the best in this drama.
Finished, it may not be perfect but this is a good drama. This is the drama to go to if you want a sad sageuk without a lot of men in beard politicking scenes. As usual Lee Joon Gi is the best among the actors here. Aside from LJG and the veterans, I am most impressed by Kang Ha Neul and Kang Hanna. I find IU not seemingly fit at sageuk at the beginning but she fits more as the episode progresses (this may sound like a criticism but it can actually be perfect for her character as she plays a woman from the future adjusting to the past). The other brothers and their lovers acting I found them in varying levels from good to bad. Nevertheless though, even the not so good actors made me feel for their characters which is something really good this drama has achieved.
Just here to remind everyone that the female lead has a name, her name is Moon Chae Won. She may not be as veteran as Lee Joon Gi, but she's a veteran too and has a lot of successful projects before this one. (sorry if I had to mention these, just tired of the lack of Chae Won recognition when she's a more veteran and acclaimed actress than most of the actresses that got popular in the last 5 years).
Watching this drama, Kim So Hyun is so beautiful and she deserves her Baeksang nomination. Everytime Ondal appears, I kept imagining how the actors acting around him (from the children to the older casts) have to repeat acting the scene just because of a scandal. Salute to all of them. Shoutout to Kang Ha Neul, my watching of him in the 3 dramas I've seen, he has grown so much as he plays a father with a teen son here (in Two Weeks my first drama of him, he was a teenager; in my second drama of him which is Moon Lovers, he was a young man).
Chaeyeon, can't wait to see you in episode 9! It's been a long wait but I hope you get a decent amount of screentime…
Yup, I wish more sageuks/historicals have a big focus on female friendships/interactions, it's the main reason I love Queen Seon Deok so much (there's a focus on her sister's friendship plus the main villain is also female that is very smart and interesting like the lead girl). Too many dramas with one female and all male leads (honestly it's the main reason why there's not a lot of popular female actresses that debuted and are around the same age as Song Joong Ki or Kim Soo Hyun). If there'a another prominent female, she's usually made into a less likable character. This drama is really very good though, I love Park Eun Bin's acting, I wish the 3rd lead female would appear and we would get more scenes of the 3 females together.
Actors were great, especially Ahn Hyo Seop and Kwak Shi Yang, but unfortunately the story felt flat and reasons…
Painter of the Wind has some of those painting parts. If you especially like the painting parts here, you'll enjoy that drama (it has same director). It's from 2008, but it's a really good sageuk (the drama won awards, lead actress got a daesang at 21 and also won baeksang best actress, two girls won best couple for the first time, drama actually features real life paintings of real life painter Shin Yun Bok, and tells some creative ways on how they were made). Kim Yoo Jung, lead actress here in Red Sky, is also in Painter as the kid version of the female lead.
I haven't seen Bridal Mask, but I think it's his most famous role (lots of kdrama forums back then talking about it). He was also a villain foreigner in a movie, War of the Arrows.
So nice to see Park Ki Woong again. I haven't seen Bridal Mask but I've seen his clips and he was good as a villain from what I saw. He was also good in movie War of the Arrows (he also plays a foreigner there). The only non-villain role I've seen him is in Good Doctor (he cameos there in the last episode as a junior doctor). What a treat to see Park Eun Hye also in this episode (Jung Ji Woon's mom), she's gotten older but she's still the same beautiful lady from Jewel in the Palace (she's Jang Geum's friend) and Yisan (she was the Queen there). The lead actors are really good, especially Park Eun Bin, she may be small in height but she's really believable as a man. I pity Crown Prince Lee Hwi's court lady so much, hair was really a great value in Joseon era. Wonder what will happen to Lee Hwi in the next episode since she just punched the foreign envoy?
I thought the king here is meant to be King Sejong, the sick crown prince is the future King Munjong (eldest son), Prince Juhyang is the grand prince Suyang aka future king Sejo, and Yangmyung is Prince Ahnpyeong.
