I do not see the mother as a comedic character... I see her as a character who is trying to save her family in spite of their refusal. I do not find those scenes funny but I see them as showing serious issues with a certain dose of lightness. Do you have any education about addictions? They are super hard to root out and for YEARS and even entire life, addicts refuse to rehab. THE NATURE OF ADDICTION IS SELFISHNESS. Some people now say that it is actually an illness where the addict self medicates, but ... let's be clear... it is always egotism at the root, choosing an easy way out instead of really facing the issues.
