I speak and understand Mandarin and I think the reasons given on MDL and in this article for dubbing are weak…
i was thinking of this but CCP isn't actually CCP like this isn't communism. they're PRC and it's just a conservative power gaining type of thing (same with russia, you know no longer "truly" communist whatever that means) and soft power and culturalism. cn was able to move rapidly and it, rightfully, combatted us imperialism and i applaud them for that but not to the point of nationalism (btw i am not purporting the US is better in any way, shape, or form just the way all our cultural identities should be more accepting imo) ...we should accept difference and respect each other and show the differences. do people with diff dialects not interact on a day to day?
do you think they are just prioritizing han chinese people and not any ethnic minority groups around there that speak it? in times of like wuxia would it make more sense? i do question this but i think more of the lines along: is this nationalism? i just dont like the fear of integrating differences for uniformity (but again that is not communist since there is no implementation of communism that has been successful although the supposed tenets of freedom are there and it isn't based on destruction which i want to acknowledges) and it really pushes anyone who may be different out. i know there's not gonna be mixed black chinese actors in these shows (even tho there's also more african immigrants or relations with china in africa—i mention this as a black nigerian-american and it's detrimental to our people domestically and abroad but also many african countries need allies as "weak" countries)
anyway but would they be unacceptable if they (mixed actors and particularly black ones i bring up cos...racism) were? is this an already built in excuse?
and why is it not good for people to not sounds the same? i can see for films but the thing is it's still art ! you can still get it across and again! it makes things interesting as well. on an actor thing....if there is a certain way they must move then why can't they learn? bc voice and movement are a huge huge part of acting in gen. i want to act again and i know this is something i must work on. my diction, my mouth movements, the way i sound. acting and filmmaking/art production are ENDLESS possibilities—we can do anything and do it well. my last reservation is wanting to know if it's for expediency/capital reasons as well buttttt also they do this a lot when actors aren't capable....so hire capable actors! there's been actors in the west get their faces and movements replaced bc they are so fucking bad and it's like...JUST GET SOMEONE WHO CAN DO THEIR JOB? IDK. literally art is a universal language there's not barriers we should adhere to...
also sorry for so many questions but i am curious do they have to dub sometimes bc of the censorate reviews? anywhooo
i think the OP is tlaking from like a level as a viewer though and logisticaly (or what propaganda or the media idk tells us is the reason) and how they like it but for them i think the dialect part is just pointing out the supposed "why" and i do agree with the bit about minority culture as i stated above with mixed actors but even reading some c-novels. but well...nationalism is...there's just a lot to unpack here, you kknow
btw thatnks fr ur insight i was really excited to hear from people with the inside perspective and understanding more of the culture outside of my own worldview and concerns. very curious to research if i can find anything about indie artists and actors and how they feel lol
Thank you for spending time on giving it a thought ! I don't think you're overthinking. Personally, despite liking…
Yes! not everyone wants to do physical acting but why not invest more in VA stuff too i mean the audio dramas are huge and the animation adaptations. that's something i found fascinating too because we have audiobooks around the world but audio dramas arent big in the US since like talk radio lol
i think the uniqueness is what's missing too, yea. there's so many possibilities so what i want to know is like...why dont they want more! and cross-cultural stuff too like there's this (very silly) BL drama but it's a mishmash of languages and it honestly was very nice and flow-y to see. same with like foreign directors directing other things in not their mother-tongue. i'm mostly wondering on an artistic and sociopolitical level like i think there is something to be said about the need for uniformity but i think that's more to keep outsiders well...out. and just from an artist's standpoint man...if the editor cannot sync it correctly or they can't do the sound design better it can be obvious. i WILLLLLLLLL SAY tho since CN has a lot of money and they can and do invest a lot of $ into this stuff if i didnt have confirmation that it was dubbed there would be some times i would question it. when i learned i was like wow that TOTALLY makes sense why it sounded so distant but for many people they'll just sense it being off even tho they may not know it's just dubbing! that is an art in itself and that's why i love doing post production; they should be lauded! like seriously there's some really annoying dubbing but there is some stuff where i'm like i can tell they could get it togehter. but that can be rare. ah man this is a rabbit hole in my mind lmao this is why i should have not picked this career path but im so interested in this concept!
Oh, I didn't know that they dubbed the actor's voices... Well, this is another diference between chinese and american…
agree with you and good point about br portuguese and this is true about other diasporas who speak spanish or ptr or even francophone countries. dubbing is something that all people can tell puts some sort of distance and if it isn't done super well—which like takes a lot of time and stuff—it's so distracting. one of my friends is german and she knows english ofc but a lot of ppl don't esp cos she doesn't live in a major city so a lot of things are dubbed and it HONESTLY loses charm. but it's a bitt different when it's their own country but still it's natural to have that reaction i think just as humans in general we realize wehen something is a bit off with speech in our bodies
honestly i dislike it not even from a regular viewer standpoint but for acting and filmmaking i feel like the charm is lost. the foley, the sound design, the audio editing if it's done super well it isn't noticeable. i never finished word of honor but it wasn't as glaringly obvious. i feel that it's just sort of sad and movement and voice training is a big part of being an actor. it isn't that the voice dubbing is bad necessarily but it takes the charm out and if you're well veresed in production or acting there's...something about that. also not everything IS dubbed so if you're going to mix in the real environment because they are shooting with the sound on i'm assuming (if not, another waste of time but it would be next to impossible to shoot with n sound it would be so stupid) they have to do it a bit better. idk something about it makes me kinda sad but it obviously very much works for the market.
i'd like to know other chinese people's thoughts or people who speak it and what a lot of artists over there think of this process. also: what's wrong with variation and difference? i'd just like to know why it persists when it very much could be written around, ignored, or into the story (think star wars right lol or anything where it's like oh we're in this era or country but all of us speak the world's lingua franca...english lmao)
and so like...why? why can't they be trained or work on their speech and voice patterns. it pigeonholes the actors and artists i feel like and it sucks that the voice actors can't be their own physical body. i hope this is making sense it is something that is so majorly incongruent to me but it makes sense but i think a lot of it is about production expediency
i can't help but think some of this dubbing is to keep things insular but idk i don't want to overthink. i'm sure that's part of it like preserving some tight cultural aspects but idk. idk!
....i need to read more about it tysm for the piece !
rich people are terrible and everyone should know that
yea it just so happens one has basic necessities (and more,, with wealth hoarding) that actively hates the other who doesn't. great for them until the class war ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ they suck
somehow i saw this and clicked and i was #triggered omfg the heart palpitations at "deragotary name for rich people"…
oh excuse me it was "change the pejorative label they've been given by China's society (rich second generation) into a positive one (new second generation)" even better
Here comes another person with a complex and bias. So, basically she is saying that rich people should never be…
agree. you can write as long and as much as you want. people if think they know, they think they know....also you were being fine.
rich people need the poor to exist to stay rich. they despise the poor, the working class, the non-rich and the non-rich aspire to be like them so they hoard that wealth too. i say this is a child of upper middle-class parents. if it isn't a satire it's really irresponsible, imo, to have this especially since even satires can't get their social commentary right as it genuinely focuses on the rich to condemn them or focuses on the "need to be rich" to succeed (i love parasite a lot but the pessimism in it could denote that)
the kneejerk reaction is one that is earned because it's honestly insulting. in this day and age? especially when many people have to pay some extra service fees to WATCH it? you have to laugh
very dubious at the content of this and if it will be an actual fun taking down the Man time or just more hypocritical judgemental men and power-hungry women. that being said, could be ok and i love the idea of like the reality show thing that stuff is fun idk i need more details this description has me stressed lmao
Totally with you. I also don't get it . There was no chemestry between the couple and not only that but they were…
i did watch and i agree! i was shocked bc i had seen both sotus'... it was their best, sadly, that's all we have. i am not gonna watch IPYTM however i thnk you will immensely enjoy ITSAY. a really great tv show for teens in general and done with impeccable care, really commendable.
Totally with you. I also don't get it . There was no chemestry between the couple and not only that but they were…
i've seen TT s1 and i liked their chemistry there but not s2. even if i had major objections to the show i would just skip to the not-bullshit but s2 was soooooo weird and awkward lmao. i think, as long as the thinking is critical, it's a fair introduction (well, maybe but honestly toxicity is a huge trope and they really need to learn to write consistent stories and character motivations but a lot skip all that.) I told sunset about you is a great example tho i probs wouldnt have classified it as BL at all. but atots is a relaly nice feel-good one. i think i have quite a bit on my list (i dont remember if i do but ive seen tons) so check it out of u want. also a big maxtul in shows fan. mewgulf did indeed hae chemistry btw lmao i had a huge crush on gulf hope he is thriving!
i've actually watched some also just feel good cheap BLs that no one cares about (which are funny imo more tfun than the rest lmao) and there's been more chemistry there with a series with a shoestring budget than here. LOL. damn maybe we are the weird ones
and sometimes some things just don't click. goblin i couldn't because she acted like a 5 yr old and atp the fandom for the untamed is so big and gargantuan i don't even want to start down that path it got SO BIG it's overwhelming to me x__x feel like i missed the train
