On HIStory3: Make Our Days Count Mar 12, 2020
i know people say the "title gives it away" because make our days count implies showing youth and young love etc. so i dont think they foresaw it, trully, but just stuck it in there. i haven't finished but i've been reading comments (and i dont think i will—was super disinterested in the second couple too) and honestly when i saw a spoiler a couple months ago i was surprised. hate to say it but i doubt this was planned in advance lol

to be fair: many BLs just arent incredible...and they wont be. money time and attention and specifically trying to make money off of things generally younger girls/women like. many a times i get the impression either people dont care or do the best with as much as they can give. which is fine....still god what a strange end. if this happened to the old dude in that history 2 one (rightor wrong?) i'd dig it tho lmao

like i've said previously on this page, the idea is more interesting than the execution.
that's so sad bc it is honestly a great premise and could have been so much heavier (i was gonna say meatier but that's gross lol) im sad :(

I mean the moment that guy's face twitched I thought, he has a personality disorder and he's the killer.. and…
stranger is one of my favorite shows ever created ever so that's up there. the writing is really good and though i can see why some people couldn't connect with it, i love the ultimate story and what i got out of it. and the things i can see looking back (and rewatching a billion times.) i appreciate and love what the cast and crew did so much. for me i can only say like one(or two) bad things about it which the one thing is pretty egregious but it's at the end so i can forgive it LMAO

horror/crime/thriller:

children of nobody, save me 1 + 2 with 2 being my fav, trap, strangers from hell, life on mars (many a criticism tbh but emotional value >>>), white christmas

signal is a great example bc it's a really interesting show and intriguing. i do think je hoon was a weaker link but it's a drama that is up there tru...i dont think it's particularly mysterious and i do not love the nature of the serial killings (these shows get really attached to sexual violence against women) i can see why it was so popular. evocative ways to get things across

the rest of em...well lol we all have our preferences. i guess it just depends on our natural responses! dramatic cinema series on ocn i fucking love and theyre so ridiculous but have a great balance of understand the genre theyre in and having fun with it imo. i guess for me it's opposite, i think the mediocre is very rote so when something catches my eye enough to stick with it i feel like it's got something and then there's stuff that's either incredibly engaging and fun or super super well done

honestly i cannot get through the cursed and i wanted to SOOOO BADLY but ijust cannot focus!

watcher's plot is so...god i could complain about it all fuckin day. really well filmed though omg. x

Title Money Game
i...guess i dont get anything because this show is emotionally exhausting and has very little payoff. if i expect something poignant about capitalism but delivers the most stagnant, grey, extremely low tension then it's..tedious? the way we all interpret things is very different which is interesting. i'm surprised so many comments here aren't as critical... (what i have seen recently!)

i think this show couldn't get the emotional beats correct and that affected it. money is falsely tied to worth and worth to emotion but emotion was always a tool instead of an inciting event? and heo jae's rational being born out of intense insecurity flattened it. what was most surprising to me is when the man called him a communist and him getting upset...the writer of the show said he wanted to attack capitalism but the man who literally has the stupidest idea of saving the economy got...upset...? the history of it is complicated but that really...showed how unfocused the end goal of the show was.

also a lot of exposition about feelings but not showing it. like the way in which you underline what poorness or poverty can do isnt simply through words...idk if i'm explaining what i think well. just a very robotic show

what have been good ones...? i could list my favs and i think those are top tier but since 2017....

besides the horror genre...in terms of shows, this has got to be on the least bad side bc there's just been some unimaginably dull and stupid things produced that people loved but just...arent what a typical crime drama means and that's ok. watcher is a prime example of absurdly convoluted writing that passes as intelligent but is actually incoherent. sometimes simple really is best

Title Tell Me What You Saw Spoiler
GOOOOOOOOOOORL LMAOOOOOLOTS to say. fun show.edit: there's a lot i skip (mostly jang hyuk) but honestly if you…
lmao im so upset cos by this ep they were #DROPPINGHINTS it was him but still. omfg. lmaooooo.

i loved the conwoman. cool af. there's probs some plotholes but so far the show is fun enough to ignore. unfortunately i cannot stand jang hyuk's character or acting here btu i love the women lol

oh hyun jae is pretty selfish and the fact that hwa young is worried about how he will feel indicates that. she's kept up with her work and suffered immense trauma and pain; she almost died but in horrific ways. is kidnapped, TORTURED, helps a woman who is with her escape, the woman then turns on her! when hwa young was literally helping and wouldn't say any other names! and then he goads her into saying isu.

imo something that i think is imperative to remember is that he was going to murder yi su anyway. like, it was going to happen. hwa young had no other choice and there's no reason why she shouldn't have said what she did—she was saving someone but in the midst of being tortured then fucking strangled to death which goes against ALL of our instincts it's understandable.

and, again, he was going to do it anyway straight up with or without her. he found victims who said who they wanted dead but it doesn't mean he hadn't alreadya chosen. in this instance obviously it would be oh hyun jae and those closest to him

the show doesn't really have oh hyun jae as a personality beyond mumbling and being sad so. but hwa young's story got to me. as much as everything being connected~* in kdramas is annoying this one makes sense because of attachment wrt killers

brings me to my last point....i fucking hate this guy. i haven't felt him as a character bc he hasnt been, just a bunch of other people (his two friends and thenf acilitating murders and crimes of others) and he was just a thought, we had a notion of That Guy. but his friends last acts really solidified him as disgusting to me. i cant come to grips with serial killers or cult leaders anyway but man i hate this dude LOL

and oFC THEY WOULD MAKE DONG SIK HIM it makes sense, i might have to go back and see #hints but man that hurts my feelings lmaoooo poor su young and hwa young u__u

show isnt perfect but it's fun! the comments make it seem abominable. literally fast forward thru the boring talk-y bits. it's always fascinating to me what some people find awful/great on the site. is it word of mouth? or ? shows dont have to be perfect to be enjoyable and this one is just enough to keep going even with dumb shit. sometimes i feel like i live in an alternate universe lmao...also classic crime, horror, and thriller are supposed to bring out some sort of feelings.

if i know a show is bringing out the classic model they better be able to execute that decently. most times it's dumb and campy but effective. i dont fuckin know!!! it's not that serious. that crazy guy had me laughing so much i couldn't sit thru it but i get enough to tide me over and want to go to the end

i stopped watching romance honestly. but our reasons seem to be very different. there's plenty of people with great chemistry imo and creating good chemistry is your job. in SWDBS i actually abhor most of that drama but i LOVE them together—i would not call it good by any means.

a lot of dramas are meant to subvert all these tropes but either end up playing into them or unsure how to get out. most slice of life dramas about women resonate with women because it seems like people actually....like...idk talk to us

also there's a difference between change in media and "westernization." i think a lot of dramas focus on social issues (or attempt to) because of the rate of neoliberalism. but we would not have a drama about a union here that's for sure.

and it comes down to a huge part of why things feel like they have changed: they have. it's 2020. many women do not want to see what has been portrayed. so many old dramas are so misogynistic and absurdly offensive in that representation and have absolutely no care for gender or sexual minorities. that's why it's pretty stunning for us when we see characters that reflect a gamut of people.

it's good and bad; things get more progressive and some things get reeled back (i would say many, which was why Parasite did so well lol) but yea. i dont watch romcoms anymore because a core formula of them is still women in some sort of position that still cannot seem to get out of that stupid casually misogynist paradigm.

i get the sense a lot of people got into kdramas via romcoms (i did, and there are some i LOVE and wouldnt say adhere to my principals at the same time they were firsts. ''protect the boss", "jealousy incarnate" (ok really recent but i'm a huge ghj fan and there were some absurd dramas that came out like "high school king", "ex gf club", "surplus mermaid" which were so absurd and quirky.) i hope as we go on we get some better imaginative stuff. i seriously can go on i may not be able to rewatch some but city hall...

and there's thrillers, mysteries, horror, attempts at shows that attack industry...i feel as if it's promising. i don't watch western tv because there's a need for us (americans) to consume it at a rapid rate. watching a kdrama is so i can think about things and not feel obligated about it. many relax me, many make me cry, many make me mad. i don't get fomo bc no one i know gives a shit LOL ...this is so long...

from 2017 - 19 i found some dramas that gave me solace and that i adored or mostly adored and i'm glad they were made. things will keep changing but writing and filming is getting better, too (and there's plenty of disgusting garbage or shows that i think are really poorly edited etc andi am SOOOOOO GLAD that there's been changing formats in filming for kdramas bc the static HD multi-cameras drove me nuts)
