i do not love jin ki joo’s acting style and i dont remember much abt skj but i did find him beautiful in that gorgeouslg shot but terribly confusing cop show full of hot good actors so hey maybe i liked him.

i fucking hate the cops and anything to do with state apparatuses and it sincerely curbs my enjoy
ent of television but this description, the poster, and the title of the show remind me of king of high school so much and i love that fucked up ridiculous drama SO DAMN MUCH so. guess im doing a lot of new things in february

many are but many aren't. many are queer. women are primarily the audience for gl bc they are either sapphic or invested in other women or interested in seeing it just like they are interested in seeing m/f or m/m (sometimes for bi curious reasons—stupid moniker but i like that people aren't automatically subsuming someone into either straight/gay so that will have to do). this something you could all mimic.

i have a hard time not feeling like there's a lot of western centrism from a lot of people and it rubs me the wrong way but you guys are are merely inconvenienced because to you it isn't a big deal but to us who know PART (not all since it seems like this is not a heavily centered story on the romance but significant enough) of what is being occluded is literally taken out because of anti queer, anti woman, homophobic in its blanket sense (and then specifying from that lesbophobia) reasons lmao. and many of us are invested in that bc we belong to these groups and it's super annoying and things are bad!

also idk how it works there but i know that in the US the books-to-adaptation pipeline is getitng bigger and theyre taking cues from asia but for the US they are having ghost writers write books for like netflix to pick up and adapt lmao so i wonder if that was a thing bc if so WHEW listen yall i think we have to do something about this capitalism thing. i mean like...always we must but they be making baaank off of us while trying to have as few artists be a part of the process as possible wow

ok so a couple nitpick things sorry for all the notifs:

- it's not bc of the gender war. there is no gender war there is misogyny and [white supremacist cishet]patriarchy as necessity for continuing [racial] capitalism and imperial colonial hegemony. WHY would it be bad if he thought she was a feminist? WHY would "men" not want to make it? these things aren't there just because.

- gl isn't being made bc of all the shit i said, just like bl isn't in the mainstream though there isn't the dimension of women's issues for bl; bc women ARE oppressed—though the contexts in which they are matter ie a south korean woman from south korea being different than a ww from america—it will always in some way be tied to our liberation. a lot of our issues deal with our relations with men and, for a large portion of women, those relations can be sexuoromantic. ergo the theorizing of compulsory heterosexuality and heteronormativity though it should always be linked to imperialism, colonialism, and exploitation (accumulation).

- bls' audience is primarily women.

___

re the handmaiden (a bit tangential too but it's important in this convo about media/culture): it didnt just become popular because of korean women nor is it a lesbian movie (as in a movie About Lesbians or a "GL" but it can be claimed for you if that is what you want and i am not denying that just want to be clear). it is a movie about a woman who is a charge of a korean collaborator, her maid (whose subjugation she benefits from) that she falls in love with. about min hee's own complicity and their lives as women in this time AS WELL AS the men who are subjugating them, their own people, and each other. there is a gendered, racial, class, anti-colonial, queer in a very specific korean way during colonial time, aspect to it.

we are going to have to face the idea that koreans are actually people living under exactly what a lot of us in the west do. they like art just like us and know what they are doing. park chan wook is an insanely talented director and he made this amazing film that cannot just be pared down to this. it's infantilizing. HE and his crew got his people to see his film bc they love his films. they own this work. (a work that also should be critiqued bc there are elements that do not hit a feminist mark. many did not enjoy it actually).

he took a book by a white woman nazi and adapted it into the colonial past and made explicit their romance and carefully situated every aspect to correspond to that colonial past. the film world is huge and it greatly magnified both of those actresses careers (before min hee's hideous fucking loser baby dad came into the scene bc she is DUMB) so it resonated. that film is more thanJUST about queerness and we MUST ACKNOWLEDGE THAT (not yelling @ U) there is. areason that so many asian works that are queer are vague about if every move ppl make means they are xyz. we complain about it all time with their articulations in dramas (asian ql in general tbh) but it is d i f f e r e n t even the lesbian thing doesnt rly track bc it was not a thing like that. these categories is not something the colonized introduced and put upon themselves. we need to know that.

they are asian! it is important! and it makes sense why this would be absented bc the reason they [SK] are in this predicament that is having us discuss this is bc of this colonial legacy.

them being asian is very important to understand why things are the way they are and thailand is not korea so the reasons look different. everything has to be understood in its specific context

Ugh the unnecessary shippers must be on their way
i mean............i think it could be valuable and i want to see what they do say BECAUSE it is a romance and it is being censored so. like it is a gl so yea...they will ship it and it makes sense why it is upsetting even if i view it slightly differently. i think they should be more understanding btu the way ppl are like acting like it wouldnt rightfully piss them off if theyre looking for connection to somethign and the cahnge the source material bc it's sanctioned on a large level..

the source material is gay, so it's completely understandable that a group of people who are already underrepresented…
it does suck but we are consuming what they are making. this is censorship. there is a high possibility queer people are working on this as well. so i agree with you but we aren't entitled to something they will not give and we know that they won't. the person also wasn't making that comparison.

because they have to maneuver around censorship doesn't mean that they aren't working within confines. it won't be explicit but i find it hard to believe people who wanted to adapt this were doing it just for the story completely divorced from the romance that is supposedly central to it. i don't like this line of thinking; there are queer korean and/or feminist artists; they are working in that industry, working on these shows. people can derive insight and pleasure from it and it can potentially wake them up. we should support what IS out there in korea that is explicit too and work against combating what is effecting us as queers outside of just culture. there is a reason SK is like this and our consumption helps sustain that you know.

honey have you ever seen penguins, lions etc. they all gay
we are human beings not bestial. the reason society is situated like that, to privilege heterosexuality, is to maintain a certain order. though (beast) animals have complex social relationships to maintain their order like us, they do not do so for exploitation, extraction, and theft unlike us.

this is why we have imposed sexuality (categorization) on the colonized of which koreans occupy that space. compulsory heterosexuality explains the regime and why but it's not necessarily going to map onto south korea the same way because of the aforementioned imposing.

i know you were talking about birds by the way but i just think it's so funny that we are using animals here when OP (who i don't agree with) was talking about companionship but you ended up actually using japanese birds as an example on a page about a censored drama adapatation of a korean gl webtoon lol.

honestly hate stories like these (mean girls are not my thing esp not rich ones) and don't always see the value but i love her so i guess i'm sat.

think part of what worries me about this stuff is there is a bit of fan entitlement if you're not actually from these places. they live a different life, have a different way they present their culture, and queer people do work on these shows in the mainstream and in indie or funded with friends! it's not that you cannot be upset it's just that it feels like "CAN ASIANS JUST BE LIKE US FOR ONCE?" when we are consuming what they are doing, their labor, whatever. when /we/ aren't even like us. this is a thing that is going to keep happening unless we make a commitment to forcing the world to change. otoh i get why people are upset and alarmed. i keep waffling here.

and i want to point out that they need permission from the authors to adapt it. they are paying the most likely queer author money. keep that in mind and maybe you will view and get what you need out of it or try and suss out what real artists are trying to say about their lives in a world that is hostile to Life because of the people that made sexuality an issue in the first place (it's europeans).

if you told me that we should encourage these women to withhold the rights of their work unless it is under their intended vision, then you and i would be in agreement. but literally no one brings that up as an option. why aren't we urging them to do that?
