Problem with some other BLs is that they are too in your face in discussing gay issues, which is the very opposite…
i get you and i understand that. i mean one thing i think is important, at least for me in regards to this topic, is the fact that we think this genre can shake anything particularly positively as opposed to neutrality. while what we see and absorb has power, the messages presented in these shows have A LOT of flaws.

i don't think it is meant to help the budding gay community in particular frankly. imo the best road to take would be to completely deconstruct all of this and tear down expectations of gender anyway but these shows, this genre, and pretty much everything we know relies on it.

and i guess i pointed out the other stuff to say there's different points of view and clearly enough room to explore them with the abundance of these stories, you know? i think it's good to think about, and a nuanced topic, but i think it kind of gets us stuck too. like what is the right way to write these stories? i am not so sure there's any right way that will engender true and heavy material change. i think that's good too—material change comes first then culture follows. but clearly we have so much more to tackle.

regardless, with acknowledgement to her other projects, this wasn't her point to come across nor the original webtoons. actually this reminds me, there was a thai drama that i enjoyed that was story-focused and written by a non str8 man (i think it was semi autobiographical and the MC likes women as well) that didn't center on his sexuality at all but instead his experiences with trauma and those around him with being disappeared/persecuted by the government as well. it also defied the pitfalls that we all have in our cultures of having to /know/ so strictly and definitively who people are and what they like and the singularity in which it is approached. i would have more to say but i'm just thinking on this whole topic! thanks for answering, too. sorry if this didn't make sense i am so tired and dumb

Review Why R U?
I just couldn’t see past the acting for one moment in this show. Saint was particularly bad - I don’t mind…
yes!!!!! like the faces he makes? i know exactly what you mean! it's a very tough one to get through even how they get together. it's so weird to think about!

exactly! with sky castle they were batshit insane and i loved it but here i could not think of one thing i could give a shit about with ma yi deum. but still they kept asking and begging us to like her as if what she does and says wasn't evident.

everything was so all-consuming with her that it was impossible to focus on everything else but when you did get to everything else it was also bad. not sure how i can connect to a mother-daughter storyline when i can't even care about the daughter. it would have just been good if they embraced that shit and showed the consequences of it but they confused fake strength with ambition and materialism and put it onto a woman to treat it the same as they would a man, as if that's novel and new or anything we need to see or not even as boring as it is when cold ambitious men are awful in dramas. although in those dramas they tend to give a fuck about the character enough to force a change of thought (reluctantly or no)

ugh this show is frustrating and i'm kinda surprised at people liking her. she was insane and not in the fun way (sky castle! again! or how to write horrible women and have an audience love it)

I get why people don't find the FL likeable, but she is not evil. Watch what she does, not what she says.
i mean i did, she was just inconsistent and hypocritical. i am going to try and rewatch it though and see if i feel different soon

Exactly👏 I actually like her character. If her mom was anything like her maybe she wouldn't be in that situation.
nope. victim blame-y but that sounds like ma yi deum too

Just finished ep 2 and ive decided i wont finish it. How in the world is she going to redeem herself? Will she…
she genuinely doesn't. it's really sad and she doesn't get better no matter how much wishful thinking and handwaving away people try to do with regards to the story, her character, or the actress. she gets more deluded and selfish and the storyline is choppy and we know this because in real life they had some production issues surrounding the show. it's a fucking mess. also she was all more than willing to throw a woman who was abused under the bus while expecting the viewers to be okay with her cause towards her mother. bonkers absurd

it didnt scare me but it's a political thriller..unless i said it did? idk i'm not reading over my comment lol…
wow i meant to reply to this lmao

i think i mean scared in the way that i get anxious when there's twists and turns. like you know when a character is snooping and they're not supposed to? the thrill! especially in this show
thereluctantshoweater May 12, 2022
i just rewatched this yest/today and idk what drugs i was on but ia with you wholeheartedly lmao it's kind of a bummer bc i liked it so much when i first watched and then watching it again i was like gorl rly? but i also think it's bc i saw some better things since and this was during a bad wave in the pandemic so ill blame it on that. tbh tho i loved xiao qian (and amy! the coffee girl) but i love annoying women so lol

i'll present an alternative: some parents truly do not care but are still not good parents.

there's an abundance of reality in the world too and in the (very flimsy and ridiculous) categorization in BL as well. in reading your other comments, real life is going to be so different for any point of life including our identities but not just pairing it down to that. no relationship is perfect and i personally think the genre itself is a problem but it isn't because of this particular viewpoint but i also have conflicting feelings because on one hand, i think we need to move away from such oppressive and staunch understandings of gender and sexuality; to the point where reality becomes obscured either way. however on the other i question why it is specifically this genre and with men that is so popular and i think these same problems are going to continue to present themselves for several reasons.

also in the director's first series she has a rship where it isnt approved of, in her second series their sexuality isn't an internaal issue but is an external one, and in this one they are in film school which is different with regards to this (absolutely) and ostensibly (hopefully) younger people and younger parents (even in SK!) are more accepting. so it isn't farfetched (it would be even easier to understand were it a harder tension but again there is, has been, and will always be plenty of that as long as people aren't doing what the world says we "must" ). i don't think it is particularly dangerous any more than i think that the genre can never overcome its pitfalls.

that being said i actually replied to this just to iterate my frist point. it's sad to say but some parents just...aren't good. straight parents, gay parents, parents or whatever. some are just not good. i think it's absolutely plausible his mom who is emotionally neglectful, selfish, and has her own trauma truly wouldn't be interested in that aspect of his life and i know many people who have this experience. i wouldn't say it's almost worse it just fucking sucks lol which is good because the show solidified the ambiguity of the two of them for good reason. she'll never ever say sorry

binged-watch in one sitting. it was really good. No idea this was adapted from a webtoon. how I wish they explored…
i'm kinda iffy on sequels (idk why i just dont know lmao sometimes i'm like can people pull it off again?) but yes to all you said! i mean i'd love to know more aboutdaun for sure

agree with you and esp about the production value. i don't think it had as high a budget as people think or, if it did, it wasn't spent on what was needed or post. i didn't enjoy the manhua that much so i'm not coming from that angle (of preferring one over the other) but spot-on. also i'm the same about the giving up thing because i don't see how you could not come to resent that person (ESP when times are tough or like you said...they break up...i just could nevah!)

I think MDL just hates BL/LGBTQ+ shows in general lmao. Great BL shows like I Told Sunset About You, Semantic…
an 8+ is a good rating and i don't think because of homophobia. also perhaps a lot of those shows are just ok? but given that 8 is pretty high (i mean what are other people's standards then??? i'm sort of very surprised cos anything above an 8 catches my attention!) i don't think it's an issue. but i'm really surprised...i thought i had high standards and i never give 10s so id say this score is good (imo) and indicative of a pretty decent score and how people feel about it. if we average all the 8-10 scores i'm sure it comes out to this and that is across the board. there's few things that make it in the 9 range and though i think ITSAY could definitely rest there (in the 9s) its score is pretty good. one of my fav shows ever that eye think deserves a pretty damn near perfect score won't ever while another that i don't think does, will. it's up to the tides but i wouldn't say an aversion to these types of stories as that would be unfair to the vast array of us who use MDL
