I was a bit apprehensive if they can pull off the jiejie-didi romance but surprisingly they did! Even the kiss scenes weren’t as awkward as in Your Sensibility My Destiny. I’m happy Yang Ze is getting more lead roles. Lu Yan Qi is so pretty and I wish to see her in more dramas, preferably period ones.
Can't find Eng Sub past Season 1 Episode 16! Help!
You can find it on YT Yoyo Funstation channel. Here’s the link for last ep 18 but you can search previous ep on the same channel. Subtitles are auto generated so you must make do with the crappy timing and translation. https://youtu.be/yLoMUP1XTw8
I love this mini drama! It’s refreshing to have an FL that is competent, has normal beautiful face, and has a deep/sultry voice. Wen Mo Yan reminds me of Seven Tan but with deeper voice. Also they are using the popular “stupid ML” trope but Wang Zu Yi does both the stupid and cunning side perfectly and they have great chemistry together. He also looks like Lee Soo-hyuk which is just perfect.
Loved the plot for this short drama! Even though the VFX are cheap I let it slide since this is a low budget drama. Good thing the chemistry between the FL and ML is great! I would have preferred the darker side but I guess it’s also fair that the good side also wins some time. Cavan Wen has a nice face which reminds me of Luo Yunxi and Zang Sifan. I hope I see him in more historical dramas in the future.
I’ve never enjoyed any recent full length Cdrama as much as I enjoyed When You Be Me! It’s like Kdrama Secret Garden but set in HS and a lot of TV tropes were used (poor smart FL, rich lout ML, romeo juliet, etc). Watched it on 1.5x speed so I enjoyed breezing thru the eps and the plot is easy to follow with down to earth characters and there’s no mega villain but more like annoying relatives. Kido Ma and zhou Yi ran did amazing! I don’t usually watch modern dramas unless an idol is the ML but somehow Kido Ma’s acting just glued me to the screen.

It’s been such a long time since I’ve watched a modern Cdrama and watching this drama was the best decision ever! Perfect combination of fantasy and slice of life drama with teen romance! Watched it until Ep18 on WeTV VIP and super excited for the rest if the episodes. Perfect acting for the leads and I love the family and school dynamics!
*Short version of Story of Minglan but better chemistry compared to my Heroic Husband*Finally finished this drama…
Also props to the very relevant and 3D supporting characters! The Hu Family, Yu Niang, Gao Zheng, and of course the General Cui, Wulang, Minister Jia, Jia siblings, Prince Ning and his family, and even Hu Jia and Qing Jia’s assistants!
*Short version of Story of Minglan but better chemistry compared to my Heroic Husband*
Finally finished this drama and I must say it’s been a long time since I’ve seen a wholesome drama, with relevant side characters, that is not too draggy, and has a good ending.
As my intro, TLitBH is similar to Story of Minglan where the main story revolves around the butcher Hu Jiao and her fiancé Qing Jia. Like in Story of Minglan, both the ML and FL are given almost the same amount of scenes to give life to their characters. The first half the focus is the FL but the ML is still in the episodes, while the latter focused on the ML while the FL is the supporting lead. Though this has a more similar plot to my Heroic husband, the focus is better in TLitBH because none of the couple disappears in an episode. Unlike in MHH, there was a story arc where the FL wasn’t even in the same location as the ML that you can almost forget that she exists.
In terms of chemistry, this drama reminded me of the older/more traditional Cdramas which are very chaste so you don’t get a lot of kiss scenes, so the actors have it harder to make the audience see their chemistry in their interactions. SoM will be in the forefront in terms of chemistry, followed by TLitBH, then last will be MHH.
In terms of plot, SoM with its 78eps definitely had more time to deliver a great plot. MHH and TLitBH both have 36 eps and though MHH showed us several story arcs with better plot developments and villains, I still like TLitBH more. It’s because it’s the right amount of serious and light at the same time. They don’t give us unnecessary angst, problems are resolved after 1 or 2 episodes, and we still get our happy ending.
PS. IMHO Qing Jia (Tong Meng Shi) is also better looking than Ning Yi (Guo Qi Lin).
He should chose period dramas always. Specially with the long hairstyles in wuxias and xianxias! He looked sooo good in Decreed by Fate. The best look so far! Producers should cast him soon as a male lead! But I think it will be hard to find him an FL that looks younger than him.
I died at 26:40 🤣🤣😂🤣 in ep.16 you can see one of the crew members with a script & walkie talkie on…
Had to go to back again to see this easter egg. Hahaha. If I were part of the editing team I would just paste some random chinese character there to cover the guy. But I they thought no one would know. XD
The National 2nd Lead finally gets a Leading Role!!
I have been bemoaning Li Jiu Lin’s waste of looks and talent with always landing as the 2nd lead and now — huhu— he’s finally the ML. T.T. Cheng Fang Tong cute, spunky character complements his manly, charming persona perfectly. Add in to the mix LJL’s wonderful frenemies/bromance with the 2nd ML Wu Cheng Xu and WCX chemistry with CFT and we have the perfect triangle but we do know where the triangle will tip in the end. It’s always towards the manly, charming guy. I just found Decreed by Fate to be one of the biggest surprise of 2022 because of months of drought of happy and satisfying Period Cdramas. It also reminded me of one of my favorite Cdramas, also from iQiyi, which is Lovely Swords Girl which also had the best bromance/frenemies triangle ever. That didn’t get a 2nd season, but I hope this one does. But we never know with iQiyi. Let’s just hope.
PS. Also the kissing scene between the FL and ML are better than most! They are not as great as The Eternal Love but definitely better than the kiss in Ruyi Pavillion.
