Yes, I felt the same. After being so immersed in the story, rooting for the characters, it was not easy accepting the fate of some of them. I like your interpretation of the ending which provided more closure for me.
Now I am watching the other Tree show to distract me from the heavy feeling left by this one.

So far all his upcoming dramas are not modern ones but a couple of them sound angsty. So maybe there might one that we can enjoy without a SE.

I just finished one vertical drama on YouTube but it had an open ending. I find that quite of them have open endings.

They did die in the end but they did have their happy time together. It’s not a happily ever after but still the fact that they ended together was a good ending for me.

Totally understandable - this is not a light show. CZY was so good in this role, proving that he can emote so well but the scenes were heavy to watch.
