I guess what I don’t like about FL is, that she is a big hypocrite. I understand her grudge against the King and her desire for revenge, but involving all these innocent people is so freaking selfish.
I know she wanted to "help" the Princess and the Prince with the substitution plan, but claiming that it's good for the nation and its people after the prince asked who it will benefit was such a big fat lie.
Her revenge of dethroning the King has absolutely nothing to do with the well-being of the people. As far as we now the King is not a bad King. He cares for his people and tries to make decisions as a King and not for his personal interest and that’s why it’s so hard on him.
Even the King acknowledges his limitations and the constraints on his power. He has the power, but he is „powerless“. I loved how he said that, because it’s true. In that moment FL should have realized that he’s not the evil guy she makes him out to be.
What does she think will happen if she gets the young Grand Prince to be the King? Placing him on the throne, who is barely ten years old, would only lead to further manipulation and the nation's downfall. Not even Lee In can reign how he wants… Grand Prince will just be a puppet and the nation will fall into the hands of more evil people.
Also why is she holding a grudge just against the King when other people like Hyun Bo and Myung Ha were equally or even more responsible for what happened back then?
I did understand her revenge in the beginning, but if she doesn’t realize by now that her plan is bull*hit, then she is absolutely dumb. Also acting like their revenge is righteous and good for its people irks me the most. While personal grievances are understandable, portraying them as noble intentions for the people's welfare is despicable.
At this point I just feel bad for the King. I think he is actually the one who could relate to the Princess the most who would have been sent off to Qing, because he had a similar experience, when he was sent off to Qing as a hostage. That's why he also had a hard time to make that difficult decision.
Maybe that's why I was even more pissed off by FL and her stupid plan. Sorry, but that plan was so stupid and dangerous anyway. If heads roll... it will be all on FL. Seems like poor Queen will take the blame and her friend who agreed to be the substitute will also not be able to leave unscathed.
Maybe FL will learn the hard way, how it's not easy to protect the people they love and will understand the King's hard decision back then.
i feel like with each episode we get more instances of the prev. emperor's son displaying qualities of a future…
Yes, I also noticed that. I guess that was also always Lee In's plan from the beginning. He had a proud smile on his face when the Young Prince insisted on greeting Queen Dowager and even taught him a lesson how to never skip greeting lol
ML never intended to leave a heir to inherit the throne anyway. That's why he will not bed the queen or any of his concubines.
I know we haven't seen EP11 yet and my words might be controversial, but if indeed the Queen takes the blame and…
Not just the the Queen's blood. How can that friend of hers who's the substitute be left unscathed? She will likely also be executed... FL just so dumb for that. She makes a mess and her revenge is just dumb at this point.
When the principal director Park Jong Hwan was enraged for being "humiliated" by the King and said they were bound by heavens due to family bond and no one should dare to discard that bond, even evil Queen Dowager looked disturbed like "He cray cray...." lol her face was sooo funny 😂 And she is equally psycho...
Am I weird for not finding it romantic at all to get money or a bank card as a gift?
And although I enjoy the drama and loved how they got together, but now that they are together, I would like them more if they stopped infantilizing the girl in their relationship. I know she is younger than him... but still.
There is. It's not the main focus, but there is slight romance. In my opinion better romance than some actual romance dramas 😂 Don't expect skinship or physical intimacy tho. But still worth the watch, if you're a fan of subtle romance ❤️
I saw Lee Jong Won in minor roles in the past and always felt that he is ML material. And this drama proved me right. I know he had some bigger roles before, but I think he never had the central ML role in a full-length drama. He got the looks, the voice, the talent and those deep, dreamy melo-eyes ❤️ I think he especially suits the historical era. His voice in Sageuk tone is hella attractive!
I'm glad this drama got recognition and good rating in Korea. Hopefully he will get more lead roles in the future. I would love to see him in a Sageuk again.
Also I'm curious, which actors/actress do you think have melo-eyes? I love Jang Seung Jo's eyes, which are full of emotions. Sadly he's also rarely in a main lead role, especially when it's romance T-T And Lee Jong Won just made it to the melodrama-eyes list 😂
The comments are always so positive and joyful ❤️ Reading them makes me as happy as watching this drama 🥰
Next week is already the Finale 😭 I will miss this drama as well as this positive & enjoyable comment section. Wish this had more episodes. I'm sure they could've pulled it off... but maybe 12 episodes are just right, so that they're able to have this good pace and writing, without unnecessary or boring stuff.
If the finale two episodes are as good as the rest, this gonna be a once-a-year-rewatch for me 😊
I haven't seen ep 9 or 10 yet but do we think the brother is actually 💀? No body was found so maybe?
I don't think the brother is alive. Her father-in-law killed him and was there when he died. Even tho they never showed what they did with his body. Maybe they just left him and he survived. But if he was alive and well somewhere, I don't believe he would let Yeo Hwa suffer like that for 15 years...Maybe he is hold captive ...
Since the husband is already alive, I don't believe the writers will bring back the brother. But who knows :D
Just finished ep 9 and I'm amazed how there hasn't been one single episode, which was boring or dragging! Who is the screenwriter of this drama? I don't see it written anywhere.
Also love the epilogues so much! We don't get that much in the romance department during the episode, but the epilogues are always so sweet. How they have their own little secret exchange place now. They be already dating without them acknowledging it 😂 I finish every episode with a huge smile on my face due to the epilogues 😁❤️
Preview looks intense with a lot of stuff happening. Can't wait for tomorrow!!!
They ruined the story by trying to veer too much from the basic structure of the novel with this forced romance…
Gosh yes, I was shocked at how casually they wrote Cui Yan's death in... Writing really starting to suck. Reminds me of those 5 minutes short-length Cdramas. Quality of the writing really went downhill the last few eps.
The writers absolutely suck at writing romantic relationships lol
Mai and Yi Zhi had a good built-up as friends, but as a couple, not really. Also no chemistry or tension. Almost all of their scenes seem like comic-relief scenes to me. They seem like buddies. No serious scenes and not one bit romantic.
Mai and Chang Yu Qing had the chemistry and tension, but no built-up whatsoever. They absolutely rushed and ruined it. „Have you ever fallen in love with me?“ HUH? How? When? Why?
I HATE how incompetent Yi Zhi is. He killed Chang Yu Qing's brother Cui Yan while trying to shoot at Chen Qi. I know they are enemies, but I hate how he wasn't actually aiming at him and then killed him accidentally. And then he didn't even care or looked who he killed. That scene was brought up so casually and fast, I was actually shocked.... He didn't play a big role, but I liked Cui Yan T-T
is this better than Knight flower? story/character-wise?
They are both historical dramas, but completely different. Knight Flower is comedy/drama with lighter vibes and Captivating the King is heavy melodrama/angst. I like them equally. Both have good story and characters.
I am so shipping FL w SML. But the hug was sooo awkward lol. And OMG Amai's headdress in the maids outfit was…
yeah... finally she was in female attire and then that hairdo?! lol I know it's the hairstyle of the maids, but still it looked weird and I couldn't take her revenge and reunion scene with Chen Qi seriously because of that 😂
I actually like Yi Zhi's goofy character, but sometimes he's just too childish and cringe for me, especially in „romantic“ scenes. He seems like a caricature with his fake laughing and overacting. And let’s be honest… as a General he’s useless. It’s been already 20 eps, but still feels he is just giving orders according to other people’s plans and ideas.
He got his position due to his father and I hoped to see his process of becoming worthy to that position, but nothing yet to see in that department. I’m disappointed in the lack of character development in ML. And as others already said, I also feel zero chemistry between him and Mai. They feel like bickering siblings to me. I enjoy their interactions, but as a couple, they are not appealing to me.
She has much more chemistry with Chang Yu Qing. It's a shame we've gotten so little scenes or development between these two... Now even their relationship feel rushed, because the writers didn't show us any development and jumped right into it. He suddenly hugged and comforted her and I felt that was awkward, because they are nowhere near friends yet.
Mai's scenes with Chen Qi are also really entertaining and intense. I'm really curious what exactly happened in the past.
Romantically, I like her more with the Beimo guys than the Nanxia guys lol But well, I stopped caring for romance in this drama. The writers are not really good in that part, but I enjoy everything else so far :D

But I dropped "Love Song for Illusion". Sadly, not even his acting or melo-eyes could save it for me 😅

Poor Chang Yu Qing for losing him like that...
