In the drama, the best person to help propose marriage was the emperor so no one can avoid though the parents tried (drama drama. I think I like this drama version better than the novel because we and everyone else esp SS gets to see and hear how LBY feels about her. LBY’s biological parents are dead and he hates his father Ling and step mother who clearly likes the Princess R.

And adding spice to the drama

The trailer for ep 27 is really cute. The piggyback part where CSS’s mother ask LBY to let SS down. LBY releases his arms but SS holds onto him with her arms and legs, asleep. It’s on YouTube for you to watch.

Yes, nice dig at the mother. LBY said ‘everyone says to take a gentle and virtuous daughter as a bride. I can see that Madam Cheng is fierce and decisive. LOL. Wonder what Madam Cheng was thinking at that moment. But he wasn’t being rude because his next sentence is how the Chengs still have a deep love and affection for each other. Smart guy.

I used to look for what motivated the mother to be like this and one Chinese commentator said a lot of XYY’s actions are related to preserving her own reputation. She abandoned her daughter because she didn’t want to be known as unfilial. She is consumed with her reputation. She could have just ridden off with both twins if she wanted to, after all her husband wanted that. She feels her reputation is tarnished every time she looks at her daughter. How can she have such an uneducated and uncouth daughter? Never mind it’s really her fault. Instead, she finds faults with her daughter at every turn. Her ideal daughter and the ideal during that era for women is meekness and obedience- like Yang Yang.

Also, if SS did not want to be engaged with LBY, she is smart enough to think of a way to get out of it. She could have just told the emperor this is too sudden, they will think about it. No one cowers this resilient young lady. She entered the lair not really knowing what to expect. She has never been to the palace and her parents never taught her etiquette. Remember her mother thought she was never good enough to marry well. I think after she heard how LBY felt about her, she decided she could have a good life with him and decided there and then to accept his proposal. And I think she was touched by his sincerity and passion. How could she resist when he said,’ in my eyes, you are the very, very best lady in the capital, in all the world,. ….you are the only person under the Heavens who can walk alongside me.’ Wow, it’s Lou Yao times 100! This is another man who understands her and appreciates who she is, flaws and all.

I always thought of CSS as terrific, brave, intelligent and kind. She did what she did to defend herself and those she cared about (Yang Yang , QiQi, 3rd aunt). It’s a miracle she survived the 15 years she was left behind to unscrupulous relatives and actually turned out so good - patriotic, articulate, brave a with a good sense of justice. Does she need guidance? Ofcourse, she is only 15 years old and was left to fend for herself but XYY as her mother was of no help, in fact impeded her development. I wonder if she truly loved SS. In her mind, she does but her actions prove otherwise. She is delusional

I think LBY proposed so quickly because he didn’t want to lose SS to YS . He is perceptive enough to know that YS is interested in SS and even 5th prince is interested LOL. LBY was a step too late and lost her to LY so he wasn’t going to be late a 2nd time.

The way she is going on and on about her worthless daughter, she probably feels she’s only good enough for peasants.

Problem is, this is round two and XYY is still objecting. Remember, XYY told the emperor, if it was another daughter from their household ( was she thinking Yang Yang?), they would be honored. So she was using LBY’s family situation as an excuse. She just didn’t want her daughter to be the chosen one.

Looking at a trailer on Youtube, it looks like a jealous XYY slapped her daughter for liking the empress. If that is true, she is a witch. That was the slapping scene a lot of us were wondering about, but todays clip showed mum slapping her then saying she likes the empress.

Yes, you are correct, SS realizes the situation was getting out of hand and took matters into her own hands which she later explained to her parents. She didn’t want them to suffer on her behalf.
