I agreed that he couldn't let go of his responsibilities even if he gets reborn and I like to think that if duties…
I just remembered one other thing. 😊 I think YD forgave YY for the fact that he chose the realms over her (or how she thought so because that is what he said even though he was just protecting her) when TZ gave up his sect for her but she was still hurt by the fact that he took away her memories and thought he did it to make her forget their relationship (and the whole Zhixi confusion) - which is probably why there is a lot of confusion over “if she already said she forgave him then why is she holding him at a distance”.

Exactly! Whether they were reincarnated or not, what mattered to me was that they died knowing how much they mean to each other without any misunderstandings or hesitation or unresolved hurts. 🙂 But then again, my romantic heart and the idea that they were supernaturals (keeping aside issues with destroyed primordial spirits et al), made me believe that they would be together in the next life as well. Which is also probably why I love this genre. Death is never the end ☺️

I don't think it was about the choice part for her - she really did love him and she really did understand what he was going through but inspite of all the conversations they had, she never really did hear what she wanted to hear from him and that is an apology :) And that is what happened during their conversation in Ep 58. Which is the exact moment all her defences fell away. And I love how she asked him all the questions she wanted answers to and the minute she truly understood what was truly in his heart and got her much awaited apology, she turned to kiss him. Until then, it was always him kissing her even in their dreams.

Both their more significant conversations happened at a time when YY was drunk - just before the demon-deity war and now, before fighting HQ and the contrast in their relationship is beautifully portrayed. During the first one, YD never truly understood what YY's responsibilities were and simply lent him an ear while he vented. She was naive and thought he was the all powerful Sovereign Lord and never for once imagined he wouldn't get back from the war alive and well. It was more a Sovereign Lord and Immortal Servant relationship at the time. This time round though , their relationship was all YY and YD and there is a lot of worry about their future as she knows he is not an all powerful person. And even though she understood his struggles, she was also deeply hurt by what he had done and had never heard a proper explanation or apology for the same from him. All he kept saying until then was that the past is the past and he had made different choices now and wants to be with her after giving up being Sovereign Lord. Which is why she held out all this while and had the whole back and forth because she wanted to be with him but didn't want to risk getting hurt again. I know he showed her that he had changed and kept saying that he wasn't the same person he was before but she hadn't yet gotten the closure SHE needed from their past. And YY hit the nail right on the head when he said she kept pushing him away because she couldn't trust not getting hurt again. I felt like she truly wanted to be with him and was only using his duty as a reason to keep him at a distance. What I really really admire about YD through all of this though is that, anytime YY was targeted or isolated, she fiercely stood by him. And this is one of the bravest things anyone can do - put aside their personal feelings and think about the other person in a situation where the other needs support.

I enjoyed the rebirth idea in the special episodes. I didn't need it for closure per se after ep 59 as the imagery of their primordial spirits and the censer did give us an idea of what would happen but the actual scenes were nice to see as it showed us that YY remained who he is and seems to be at peace for once. And YD has accepted him wholly (even their body language is very different) which was a contrast to the last few episodes.

I love their relationship for the fact that neither was at any point in time vindictive towards the other. She never did anything to harm him just because she was hurt by him and he never considered her troublesome or difficult. Even their bickering was so respectful :)

Ohhh! I only hope the subtitles are good! Some of the subtitles for dramas I’ve seen on Netflix are … strange.

What I wrote above was what just a personal preference but you are absolutely right - based on YY's and YD's dreams, Goudan was a very big part of it. I am definitely not against it as in the end, what matters most is their dreams :) Thank you for explaining this to me :)

As someone who is not much into wuxias / xianxian dramas, but loved ice fantasy (mostly because of yand da and…
Of the three, I think LAR has the most angst only because the heroine is literally clueless and the hero comes with a lot of issues due to his heritage. I found it completely engaging cos just when we think everything is sorted, something new pops up and it keeps going until the end where it ends with a wholly unexpected twist. The pacing is great and, I love Si Feng.

I wasn't as invested in AOL when I saw it first but I am planning to watch it again now that I have a different perspective on life as well :)

The Untamed is one of my favorites and the angst is intense but minimal, all things considered mainly, cos we have a huge time jump and so, are spared what happens during a time of separation. The story line is epic though and the characters are brilliant. WangXian owns my heart. Now that I think about it, this is prolly the one drama where I think of both lead characters as a unit and neither one outweighs the other.

Title Love and Redemption Spoiler
Can anyone tell me what's the difference between primordial spirit 元神 and soul 心魂? How is Xuan Ji and…
Hiya! Let me see if I can explain it in a way that makes sense :)

The primordial spirit is basically described as the soul without any sentience. So, if you were to be born, you'll need the primordial spirit which would occupy a body to take a physical form. And once you come into existence and start being aware as an independent entity, you develop a soul.

When Bailing killed Ketu, he destroyed Ketu's heart and removed his soul and locked it in the jade lamp. He then used a piece of the lamp as the heart for the body that he turned into the god of war, who then developed her own soul after experiencing the 8 lifetimes (since this body still had a part of Ketu's primordial spirit). When she's born as Xuan Ji, her soul is essentially part of Ketu's primordial spirit plus her own but since she doesn't have any of her senses, her soul is not fully formed. Which is also why she's portrayed as not being "awakened" and doesn't understand right from wrong etc. When Ketu's soul (which is essentially having all his experiences, perceptions and memories) is released from the lamp, it takes over Xuan Ji's body as it is drawn to his primordial spirit that is already there. So now, it is one form (like a physical body) which has 2 souls. Since Ketu's soul is stronger due also to the fact that the primordial spirit is originally his, he tends to be the more dominant one until Xuan Ji's love for Si Feng overpowers his soul and comes out. In the end, Ketu himself separates his soul from Xuan Ji's and they both have separate physical forms and become independent of each other. They essentially share a primordial spirit :) [It's kind of hard to explain but the primordial spirit isn't exactly separate from the soul but more like an extension of it but the souls are different].

I hope this helps :)

Hehehe I like the way you think 😀 And, I concur. I am not a big “should be married”, “should have kids” etc proponent either. I feel like them (or anybody else for that matter) together in any equation they choose is good. In fact, I can see YY just picking up his fav weiqi board and moving into Goudan with nothing more than his lotus embroidered belt and settling down there with YY. He’ll spend his days keeping the 3 realms safe, reading YD’s scripts and giving his feedback, while YD holds her rehearsals beside pond.In fact, he’ll decree that anyone in love can live as they choose to. And YD will travel with him whenever he has to visit the other realms and give him ideas on what to do when he faces issues. Maybe Goudan is adopted from one of the other realms. YY will be kind and patient and YD will be chaotic and fun as caretakers.

Poor Yan Dan not knowing that when she was stationed at his palace, YY was so tough on her precisely because she was so brilliant! I'd like to think that some of her knowledge about all those spells and enchantments and whatever was happening in the later episodes was from books she'd copied as her 'punishment' :)
