One of my fav books is about such a character. He’s super powerful and has zero qualms about doing whatever he has to do to get his way done. But once the heroine comes into the picture (they were childhood friends and she was the only one who showed him any kindness and then she gets kidnapped and he ends up looking for her), he still remains who he is but changes his tactics to justify them as being done to protect her. Everyone else sees him as a morally grey and dangerous person but she’s the only one who knows the real him.
