Are you kidding me? They are brother and sister. The princess will end up with Qimin.
Both of them are Xuan royal family from Khitan ethnicity (minority ethnic).

Xuan Lie and Xuan Qing Kui.

Woah i read several comments below and I already saw some ppl keep commenting on Angelababy performance 😅 is she that bad? I watched this drama and her acting is still pretty okay for me. At least, she didn't put me out of the story.

She is almost bipolar. Her moods switch with a blink of the eye. She acts jealous of Qi Luo, but she is not interested…
Xuan Lie is her older BROTHER

Keep watching. I love the 2nd leads too. Their love story will be separated from main couple. Plus Ren Hao is…
Yes. No need to judge a character too early in the beginning of episodes. Even bad people can have redemption arc in later episodes. Not to mention this is a 2nd FL who had a significant role in the story. She saved Qimin from those bad people who captivated him and sold him as slave. Everyone will go through the process in character development. I see that princess has not fallen in love with Qimin yet. But i can see it's coming soon. And i am sure it will affect/change her "princess syndrome" that people talked about.

I haven't watched ep 7-9 yet. But every character has different approach. The princess maybe will have some character developments in the future. I don't find her annoying for now. I still like them as 2nd couple. I am waiting their scenes in every eps.

Because she is a concubine first and not a wife straight away? Lol!How many drama's have you watched where concubines…
Who said that? No! Give me example then. For MOST of period costume dramas FL always got married as Main Wife directly, not concubine. For example Blossom, The Double, Story of Kunning Palace, Wonderland of Love, Story of Minglan, Destined, Are You The One, The Rise of Ning, Goodbye My Princess, Joy of Life, My Sassy Princess, The Princess Royal, Blossoms at Adversity, Rebirtgh For You, etc many more. I can even write pages about more dramas when FL married to ML as MAIN WIFE.

The dramas that I knew FL was married as concubine then become main wife is New Life Begins and The Blooms at Ruyi Pavillion. The other dramas always choose the FL to become main wife directly.

Kill Me Love Me also had this kind of plot BUT the ML decided to married the FL as his only main wife until death. Nah.

Yes. Romance in LLTG was also blooming in Part 2. So we need to wait patiently for Jin Xiu Fang Hua. I prefer they air it back to back like LLTG. But production team need to follow the new rules.

Again 😂 i know what you meant. Need to wait S2 before commenting about FP. Mudan was also busy to survive on her life in season 1. I understood the writer choices tho.

But i kinda disagree when you blame it to the genre (historical) in first post. Because other historical dramas got so many kisses/intimate scenes + romantic scenes + love confession.

FP had slowburn romance but it's all about the writer choices for the scenes. For example LLTG also had slowburn romance but they had proper love confessions from Ling Buyi + kisses + other romantic scenes.

I know what you meant but other historical ROMANCE dramas got proper love confessions + kisses + hugs + other intimate scenes (bed scenes, bath scenes, etc)

I guess that's what she/he meant.

Yes what does that even mean and stand for? Never heard of it
AvenueX said this position was really exist in Tang Dynasty. Their job was like the special mission from Tang emperor. So it depends on the emperor's order about what they had to do. The right translation is Inspecture of Flower and Bird.

I also asked the same question here before but NO ONE answered me or ppl here also simply just don't know LOLSo…
I think the drama decided to make fictional tribe for this drama. It's weird honestly. Mongolian tribe style with Han chinese surnames? It's a bizzare thing you know.

Actually i am waiting some users like me (who is historical freak) to reply my previous post. I know some certain people in MDL that also interested in historical backgrounds. But unfortunately, they haven't checked this drama yet. This drama was aired without announcement. I need to wait longer to hear what they said about this.

Back to the topic, the drama maybe took some inspirations from particular mongolian tribe. Actually they still can use the historical background for the clan/tribes.

China still allow period costume dramas to use accurate historical backgrounds. There is three types of Chinese historical dramas.

1. Historical dramas with 90%-100% accuracy for events/costumes/cultures etc. For example Qin Dynasty Epic, Serenade of Peaceful and Joy, Ming Dynasty, etc.

Historical dramas with 70%-80% accuracy with dramatized event and additional fictional stories. For example The Legend of Haolan, The Story of Yanxi Palace, Ruyi's Royal Love in Palace, Royal Feast, The Long Ballad, etc.

2. Historical fiction dramas with the MIX of historical facts/backgrounds with fictional stories. Fyi, MOST of chinese period costume dramas use this method to create their stories. But they still use the REAL dynasties as their historical settings/events/backgrounds. For example Kill Me Love Me, Wonderland of Love, Blossom, Flourished Peony, Love Like The Galaxy, A Dream of Splendour, One and Only, Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty, Legend of Zhuohua, The Double, and etc many more. I still can write more dramas in this category.

3. Historical dramas with pure fictional dynasties. Usually the production team still use the background from REAL dynasties but they changed the name of dynasty in the drama. I will give you one example because my post is already so long. For example "Story of Kunning Palace" (they mixed two dynasties in one drama, the forbidden palace is from Ming Dynasty, but the costumes, make up, hairstyles are from Song Dynasty). And they created their own dynasty name in the story. It is called Qian Dynasty. Another examples, "A Girl Like Me" used fictional Ye Dynasty, "Pearl Eclipse" also used fictional Zheng dynasty and etc many more 😂 Who Rules The World and New Life Begins are also in this category. I guesss I can write many pages if I have to write more dramas and explain everything.

Does anyone know what ethnic group/their culture is the inspiration for the costumes in this drama? They look…
I also asked the same question here before but NO ONE answered me or ppl here also simply just don't know LOL

So here is my guess (answer)

It's mongolian tribe costumes for sure. But the surnames they used is for HAN people. Like Xuan, Luo, etc. That's why i am not sure which mongolian tribe that they tried to portray in this drama. HAN is the majority ethnic of chinese people. Most of dynasties in China are led by han people such as Qin, Han, Sui, Tang, Song, Ming, and etc many more.

For this drama minority ethnic, It can't be Xianbei I guess. Xianbei people had blood of half Han x half Mongolian. But their style was not very mongolian because they claimed themselves as Han people. So they mostly used Han people costumes and cultures. Xianbei surnames are also very unique such as Yuwen, Murong, Touba, Duan, Dugu, etc.

It also can't be Xiongnu because their surnames are similar to Xianbei (two syllables). For example Helian from Xia Xiongnu dynasty.

Or is it Liao dynasty (Khitan people)? Idk because it also had unique two syllables surname like Yelu for example.

Rouran Khaganate Mugulu, Yujiulu clan? I don't think so.

Turkic Khaganate like Ashina clan? Hmmm...No.

I need to keep researching about "mongolian tribe" in this drama because their surnames are very "Han people". It's weird and unusual.
