You should definitely read the theories and I would suggest you to watch the Avenuex's video that compares the book with the series. He is the epitome of the devil in the book.
When I finished this, I liked the series quite a lot, but I was not wowed. However, after reading the comments and the explanation of some scenes that I (having 0 observation skills) did not notice, I was blown away. The sounds in the end of the eps for example, that I almost skipped 😂 It has many details that I did not notice at all or I didn't think that far.
I liked the symbolisms, but I agree that it was confusing at times. I think that mostly had to do with censorship (unfortunately). However, after hearing how the book was like, I feel like they did their best in the adaptation.
It is probably the algorithm that takes time to adjust. It is a new series, only two eps are out. Some people may rate it, as they watch it, or drop it and since they are not that many yet the algorithm takes time to make the corrections on the rating. I, for example, watched it yesterday. If I hated it and rated it as such, the rating might have decreased, because not many users have rated it so far.
Besides, even though I am not doubting that there are many people out there that would create some fake accounts to lower the rating, I don't think that is the case here. At least, I don't see a reason to do that, unless someone hates one of the leads that much. Even if that is the case, they will become obvious sooner or later.
Aside that though, this series has no scandal nor is it a bl, so I don't see why it would have a low rating in the future. Even Racket boys maintains a high rating on MDL, even though there were many people giving it a 1 star rating and creating fake accounts, because of one of the scenes. It still has a 4 rating on iMDb because of it.
Let's wait one or two weaks. Like I said, many series started like this. Eve didn't have above an 7.8 rating in the first one-two weeks.
If you scroll down enough in some pretty popular series, you will see lots of comments complaining about the low ratings, even though the series has a high rating now.
I doubt the rating will stay like that though. It will probably stabilize in a few weeks.
AoS had a 6.7 rating at first and now it has a very high rating.
It is really good so far though. You should give it a chance!
Btw, if you are into horror, try After Dark. I feel like you will enjoy it.

Joke aside, I haven't watched this one, but it looks good. Not going to be for everyone though, like all the other Koreeda films, thus the rating. I feel that people who watch movies are strict when it comes to rating.
However, some of the dramas/movies offer info about the platforms that they are available in. This one isn't one of those, since the movie is not available in any legal source to watch.
For the time being the unofficial program helps to keep track of when to watch the series.
