It’s one of the best dramas I’ve seen- Chinese or not. But you need to have patience. It starts off very slow- and will be slow for about 14 episodes. The best way I can describe this is that it’s a journey. You might not understand what you’re watching initially, but when the show finishes, you’ll appreciate the whole journey completely. It is an emotional roller coaster

Agreed. It’s sad to see the ratings drop like this just because people don’t want sad endings

People are miffed that it doesn’t have a happy ending. I thought it ended the best way possible

Watch The Untamed if you haven’t yet- it doesn’t have star crossed lovers, but it has a very misunderstood antihero type. It’s an incredible show- but it starts off rather slow. You might be confused for about 11 or so episodes , but it’ll all make sense once you reach the middle part of the show. If you want stuff similar to TTEOTM, Love and Redemption is really good. Both of these are xianxia- Chinese high fantasy.

People who couldn’t bear a sad ending are rating this abysmally. So unfair

Don’t know what’s up with the comparisons between LBFAD and TTEOTM. They’re vastly different. LBFAD is less complex - and I guess that’s why it’s so popular - because most people understood it easily. TTEOTM is way more complex of course. Furthermore, there are zero similarities between the dramas. Dongfang Qingcang and Tantai Jin are vastly different characters with different motivations and fates. Lanhua and Li Su Su are totally different. LBFAD had some interesting concepts that were unfortunately left undeveloped to focus on the romance in the story. It’s fine if that’s your cup of tea, but because romance isn’t the main focus of TTEOTM doesn’t make it lesser. Personally I prefer TTEOTM because it had an insanely complicated story, great character development, and everything wraps up well at the end. The technical aspects of the show are flawed no doubt, but that doesn’t take away from its brilliance

Oh boy- so many more heartbreaking scenes ahead. This show is so amazing and such a tearfest

I think it’s because most people didn’t like the ending. I personally think it’s a great and realistic ending though

I gave it close to a 9. I thought if the show had taken place over a longer time period (not 24 hours) it would’ve been a bit more realistic. I enjoyed more of the political intrigue than the endless action. The action bits got quite repetitive after a while, and I couldn’t buy that they went through soooooo many situations and still came out in tip top shape without any rest. However, the production value of this show is AMAZING and so is the music.

There’s no cute and friendly banter between the male friends as you’d expect in a bromance. It’s more that they went through some life and death situations and remained loyal to each other (in fact with all of the men in that faction). That’s what I meant by brotherhood. They’re ready to fight for certain ideals together

That’s my main issue with the show. I’d have believed it more had it happened within a 3-day period

Prince Yu was poisoning Consort Xuan, but what was the poisoning doing to her and what was the impact of the poisoning. Didn’t figure it out. Does someone know?

I think his mathematical abilities here are innate. Looks like he was too poor to actually study it, so by making him autistic, it’s probably a way of saying that he has a natural talent for maths

I dunno. Haven’t read them, but on the show, they call it Shi Lan Ke. I’m not Chinese, so I can’t confirm, but even the version of the show uploaded on YouTube had Shi Lan Ke in the subs.

I think the intense and emotional reactions from the physicists comes from the fact that everything they know about the nature of reality is suddenly brought into question. I think this is illustrated well when Wang Miao asks Shi Qiang (in ep 5) if he’s ever pondered about philosophical questions like how the universe came to be and what the laws of the universe are. These are so important to the physicists, and things that are beyond these laws and negate everything they know about the nature of the universe causes an existential crisis.

Some Chinese costume dramas are confusing until ep 5 or so. Don’t worry, it’ll all make sense eventually
