One thing I've come to term during my long term c-novel reading is that a novel at the scale of 'Sheng Shi Di Fei' will never work in a 1:1 adaptation into a drama, unless it's broken down into multiple 40-episodes seasons, which will not happen at all in today's drama market.
So, while I loved the novel so much, I already braced myself for the potential changes. The worst thing that could happen is a sloppy adaptation which cut stuff here and there just to fit into 40-epi length without regards for the logic and continuity, which thankful is not the case here.
My heart would break even more if it was adapated sloppily, the characters I love were given harsh criticisms, and the drama is forgotten once the airing is finished. So, I'm thoroughly satisfied with the current state of things.
This is just me though, basically how I cope with the inevitable changes happen with every adaptations.

To me, it would be so weird if she had the time to fall in love like a carefree girl at this stage of the story while she's dealing with all this turmoil. Also, imo, this approach adds more layers and psychological depths to their relationship development, because it's no longer just a case of moving from point A to point B like in a standard romance story.
Imo, at this stage of the story, Ye Li has respect, admiration, gratitude, and a promise to fulfill to him. Even though she had already committed to him for life even before setting foot inside Prince Ding's manor, she's not at that 'romantic' stage yet.

Empress Dowager seems to be a disciple of Li Shan academy. Ye Li's mother is a descendant of the Xu family, who's the owner of Li Shan academy. So, there must have been some close personal relationship.
Li Shan academy produced a lot of officials in the court, so their influence is formidable. We can treat it as a big faction within the court. If half the court is opposing you, you can't justifiably ascend the throne after all.

I would have totally missed this if not for this comment. The details that went into this is crazy.
