By helping him escape, ML comitted a serious offense to the current royal family. If discovered, the entire Lin family is done for.
The Zhao father and son dug up the clues and obtained evidence of ML saving the ex-crown prince, and were about to use it. ZXT stole that letter, and later gave it to FL. How they knew was that they traced the body double ML arranged to fake the death of ex-crown prince.
