It takes them so long to release a new episode that I end up thinking this series is just a figment of my imagination. As the Titanic meme goes, "It's been 84 years."
Back at Viki, people have been unusually pounding it Swiftie-like. I watched it and still have no clue why. The original Saint-Zee storyline had more angst; the Sun-Woo/Yoo-Kyeom story here is sweeter. The other couple is much funnier here though, when the original Thai story arc could be irritating and repetitive; Lee Won is given more agency here too (Thai-version Zon was just the usual fragile neurotic ‘wife’ cliché of earlier Thai BLs), and his interactions with his sister are much snappier as well. The Thai version was plagued by the pandemic and covid restrictions had the showrunners cut many storylines short, so the second half was pretty much softcore porn — two entire episodes of steamy sex and talk on the beach, for instance. The key word here is ADAPTATION. The South Korean Why R U? is a different animal: not a masterpiece but then again, neither was the Thai original. It’s cute, bingeable, forgettable fun with a nice pace.
I love how all characters are engaging and how the storylines intertwine. There’s more than one interesting backstory too. I’m pleasantly surprised with the writers: these are the same people who gave us Hidden Agenda, but here they are writing like pros! (OK, I liked Lovely Writer too.) With all the versions and platforms around, I don’t know whether enough people are watching this so I can only hope it’s a hit and they don’t screw up. And if you can, do watch the uncut version. I’ve been watching it since the beginning and so far I think the episodes would lose a lot without 15 minutes each.
I love that they had Boston dress like some extra from that 1980s’ Al Pacino gay stalker movie (Cruising) to show that he’s sleazy. But can we get more of Yo’s boyfriend please?
Drama, suspense, action, increasingly great romantic scenes, over-the-top acting, colourful supporting characters, this has everything, and the only school student dies in the first episode! It’s full lakorn with a nice gay couple (actually, two) and it runs circles around most BL series airing right now. Fun, fun, fun, fun, fun!
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah...
But can we have a moratorium on the ‘lovers who know each other since they were kids’ trope?
