I’m not sure either. I thought she did well too. Lively roles are hard to perform and they have their own acting style. I also think some viewers didn’t understand that there will be a difference between acting for a comedy and a serious drama and because it was different from what they’re use to seeing her in, they feel the acting is bad. Or they feel because she is a good actress, she should only do serious productions.

Yes! I think she is independent too. And the “weak” moments were only with Ning Yuxuan because she trusted him enough to be vulnerable but she was capable everywhere else. A lot of strong women in real life often talk about the burden of having to be strong all the time and having no one to rely on so I think it’s important to show strong women women being able to have weaknesses and emotionally rely on their partner. Jiman is an ambitious young woman with good business skills who won’t stay with a man who doesn’t treat her right and thinks of ways to help others. I think PXR chose this character well and I think she generally chooses good female roles so it was sad to see all the criticism of Jiman on this page.

Yeah, there’s nothing that can be done about preference. I think xianxia and wuxia generally rate higher on this site. I also think this site has a preference for stereotypical strong girls which RoaTF doesn’t have. Most shows like this that focus mostly on the romance and have a bubbly female lead tend to get more complaints/lower ratings.

Looking at the Maoyan data, the reviews from Chinese fans, and reading the reviews here, it seems this show attracted the wrong audience on MDL. It’s really a show for people into light hearted romances who like cute girl characters but doesn’t seem to have attracted that type of viewer. I also think the plainer styling did as intended and made viewers focus more on the acting skills rather than on the pretty dresses so it was judged more critically, at least in China.

Yeah, skipping is so common with Cdrama that it’s pretty much a given that viewers will jump or fast forward. I didn’t with this show or with Jun Jiu Ling though. I might complain about Xie Ze but he really is good at pacing. I never skip or fast forward his dramas. If he could partner with a director with better style and shooting aesthetics, he would be unstoppable.

Tbh, it’s really rare not to fast forward in a Cdrama so I don’t really count it as an indicator of quality. I skipped the first 10 episodes of Eternal Love with no loss, the last 15 of AoL, and like 20 of Rise of the Phoenix. I still think they’re good shows though. It’s just that unlike Western dramas that give you short bursts in seasons, Cdramas give a huge chunk so the slow bits are going to be more noticeable than if you only got a little bit at a time.
This show slows down in the middle to focus on the romance but then ramps up at the end to great reward if you’re into romance.

Also, these two are not traffic and Xiao Ran doesn’t really have fans who do data so this feels like a real score. And, judging from the range, and how it’s evenly distributed, it doesn’t look like the show bought ratings either.
The Maoyan data is also out. It was Top 1 a number 12x. It topped the Maoyan online drama hot list 9 times. Ning Yuxuan became the most popular character and the character Ji Man ranked second. The most interesting thing is the demographic was overwhelmingly female and that the highest proportion were between the ages of 30-39.

The show scored 6.6 on Douban which is a bit of a surprise to see it so high given the reviews here (For reference a “good” drama in the likes of GBMP scores from above a 7.0 and a more popular xianxia playing now scored a 6.2) I have a feeling it might get bombed now though now that the news is out…

In the end, I actually do like the plain look of this show better. I like it more than even GBMP because people can’t say Xiao Ran relies on the costume to sell her acting like with GBMP and strangely this makeup sometimes captures Xiao Ran’s actual features better when it does work. The flowing robes shots are really to die for and I do think the Guinevere western style but make it Chinese look is really pretty and novel in some shots but overall the actual quality of the costume fabrics was killing me throughout the show. It pulled all the looks down. If you were an actress, this was really was a show where you had to be good looking in order to survive because the costumes weren’t going to give you any points at all.

1. Yes, it gets explained although not everyone is happy with what happened.
2. The ending is really good. I think it’s more people are moved by it because it’s got a really beautiful message and the acting is really great. It’s that kind of sweet that is a little bittersweet because of what happened to get them there but it really is a great ending😭

Sorry for the rant but I’m glad someone else said it😩The outfit really depended on Xiao Ran’s good looks to sell😅I really don’t understand how no one said anything when they saw it. It’s one of the gaudiest looking dresses I’ve ever seen on a woman who literally has one of the most famous wedding dress looks in recent years. Her in a red wedding dress is actually a marketing point and Chen Minzheng did things like this. You know it’s bad when they only show her in underrobes in the stills. I’ve got Chen Minzheng permanently on my sh*t list because of it but apparently he’s just like this. I feel like they changed designers or something because none of the costumes or makeup looks as bad in the makeup videos. I don’t understand how a costume designer known for ugly costumes still has a job.

Seems like it’s because he’s not in enough costume dramas. RoTaR seemed popular but it’s rare to maintain popularity without a few costume dramas. I also think his costars haven’t been traffic stars at the time of filming and release which can also affect popularity but it’s okay he’s 95 and they’re in their rising period so he’s got time and he’s got quite a few famous IP costume dramas coming up so he should do well.

I post because I think it’s sad that foreign fans miss out on a lot of the drama chasing atmosphere that tidbits and BTS can bring so I try to recreate what I can by posting links. Plus the views help the drama which helps the actors.

That’s just a rumor and was probably referencing this drama. It often happens that information gets mixed up when it comes to drama rumors. Plus that rumor is really old so it’s probably not going to happen.

I’ve seen some of his LYST looks but they’re very heavily costumed. I’m not a fan of that production company because I feel they overdo looks to compensate for newer acting skills but someone like DYX doesn’t need the bells and whistles. They might actually be a distraction. Or it could be that I like his face😅And when I like an actor/actresses’s face I want to see their features. That’s why I always have complaints about Li Mu Ge’s makeup and why my favourite photo of her is a still of her from a tribute drama playing a village girl.
The woodshed felt like his and Xiao Ran’s best looks in the show. I thought the loose ponytail and official uniform looks were good too.
