Agree, they missed out on each other in this life due to others' mistakes as well as their own. What we needed at the end was either: [1] reset of this life or back to past plot where they remember what they did and decide to choose differently this time [2] wake up from a fortune telling dream or some mystic chai from some old man in some village they stumbled upon after they found out they are about to get married. So when they wake up they are confused, in emotional turmoil, reluctant to fight the marriage or do the same actions as before, as they are not sure what is this all about. And then they meet each other and kinda question whether it was all a dream or reality. [3] we see them in their next life, they do not remember their last life but they kinda have different character, wiser, as they learned something from this life.
Maybe there is something else but this is all I can think up at the moment.

Actually I think she knew SML liked Yan'er first but she loved him despite that. As Yan'er said in ep16 my sister loved you unconditionally and never asked for anything back. I think her love was toxic and obsessive. She loved SML more than her own sister or herself. She killed herself to not be a burden to SML and wrote a letter to her sister knowingly manipulating her and setting the chessboard in the favor of SML at the expense of everyone else because she liked him and wanted it that way. She was dangerously smart and cunning and made a victim of herself to "help" SML secure the throne and with that ruined lives of everyone else.
Allegorically, our FL, although unaware, did the same thing with her own letter. She pushed everything to the point of no return because she decided to put her and SML's safety first and call Yuan she knew would come.
We should've known what's coming since it's Li Fei's drama...

Hands of destiny were about to bring them together, had they not resisted but their own personalities got in the way and sabotaged the destiny. Had they not done what they did, and react how they have reacted they would have been together and happy now. However because they are who they are and they did not change at all actually, they are not meant to be together. I see it as a destiny works but you have to work your part too, otherwise no happy ending. If they were to be given a second chance they would have to work on their personalities and actions in order for it to work.

I watched ep.18 with Google Translate. It is soo heartbreaking ð Yan dies full of regret. She realised what a fool she was, she realised she never gave Yuan anything of her love, she realised she never choose him first or at all, hence that "I will choose you in next life" she is trying to redeem herselt in Yuan's eyes. I somehow believe as long as he was alive and well she was able to stand anything, and when he died she realised how much he meant to her and that her life is meaningles. So she kills herself to reunite with Yuan in death and kills Yiren from revenge cause he did many many bad things to her.
