Question for you...the whole Deena storyline...was that a prequal episode that I watched? The dancing thing?
Yes, in case you haven't watched Nan's episode yet, it will be good to see Nan's episode so that later on when Nan confronted Phu on his disappearance, you can better understand his angst and struggles during those years when Phu went MIA.
I don't think that's Gie Gie in the prequel episode. It's likely another girl from university (I will need to…
Not quite sure about that though...
Several possibilities - first, maybe really the same Gigi / Gie Gie, but the actress playing them are definitely different (from the info page of The Promise and the prequel episodes), so it may hint that they may not be the same person after all (maybe the company cannot get the original actress to play the current Gie Gie character?)
But story wise, it definitely does not make sense as the prequel clearly shows that Phu knows Gigi very well (and Deena too), and it is unlikely that Phu who still remembers so many things about Nan (naturally, since he really loves him), can't remember Gigi who is his 'rival' for Nan (in Phu's POV at least).
Possibility is Gigi's appearance changed quite a lot that he didn't recognise her at first, but I really think that they are really different people who happen to share the same name. After all Gie Gie introduced herself as colleague from work, and not university junior or something like that (Gigi in the prequel was a first year junior of Phu and Nan, who were in their final year - I think)
(There is also the possibility that the production company does not want to restrict themselves completely to the short prequel films' storyline and characters - as those seems to be originally meant as standalone project, that due to great response, were then expanded into a full series, hence they allowed themselves some modifications to the story and characters)
Itβs weird. Somehow there much more positive comments on YouTube for this series compared to MDLπ but I am…
YouTube tend to be a lot more positive for quite a few series versus MDL, as MDL commenters are quite infamous, unfortunately of being overly critical at times. Not only that, but also the known MDL bias and handicap against BL series in general.
Regarding Season 2, I want them to resolve everything in the 10 episodes, and I am fine if they don't have any sequel as long as the story comes to a complete, happy ending.
Of course, if they are to extend it to explore more of Phupha and Nanfah relationship going forward, I'll be more happy to watch that!

Not trying to defend the series or anything, but I think as intended by the producers, the short films (Phupha…
Personally, having experienced something similar before, if I were to meet my best friend after missing so many years, first thing that comes to my mind and heart is to be happy first
(If that person is truly the one we really like/love, even after all the pain and sufferings we experience, the first instinct we have is to be happy first at seeing the other person back)
That said, as Nan has shown in the first three episodes, he still wants to know why Phu disappeared in the first place (he did press on Phu during the dinner scene in EP 2), but as hinted in EP 2 and EP 3, Nan also has that inner fear in him that Phu may disappear again.
(Nan telling Gie Gie at the start of EP 2 literally to hold Phuβs hands as he spoke to his annoying colleague, Man over the phone, as if he was so scared that Phu will disappear again, and then how he told Phu, βdonβt ever disappear from my life againβ at the end of EP 2 on the rooftop)
From Nanβs perspective, I feel that he didnβt want to push too hard, as the prequel also showed us that Nan likely thought that it must have been something wrong he did/him being at fault that Phu disappeared in the first place.
Not trying to defend the series or anything, but I think as intended by the producers, the short films (Phupha and Nanfah episodes) that were expanded into this series were meant to provide the background of the story, from both Phupha and Nanfahβs perspective, and they heavily focused on the more angsty parts of their relationship (during the years just before and after Phupha disappeared from Nanfahβs life)
I am quite sure that if the whole university story of Phupha and Nanfah is to be hypothetically made into a multi-episodes series, it will have a lot of lighter, more happy, maybe even comedical moments, and rather mundane moments that are obviously not included in those two short prequels.
Similarly, Nanfahβs episode on finding Phupha in Melbourne solely focused on his desperation in finding his missing best friend, and excluding most other aspects of his life during those years.
In this series, so far up to EP 3, we have been getting more glimpses of what happened during those earlier years, which could not be contained in those short prequels.
Hence, the current The Promise timeline, which takes place several years and more than 10 years after the two prequel episodes, (as I mentioned before), is a more wholesome telling of the story from both perspectives combined. Hence, from our audience perspective, we may indeed feel a significant difference in the atmosphere of the story versus the prequels.
I was the same with some people here, at first I felt quite disappointed with the first 2 episodes because I have…
I like the way how they reveal bits by bits the reason behind everything. The flashbacks to the younger times and the university times are also quite well done too (in my opinion)
Personally, I want to follow their story to the end, whatever it may be, hopefully a good ending!
Note: agreed on Nan, he can really be very oblivious to the people around him. I have a feeling that when Party confessed his feelings for Nan, Nan will thank him for that, but chose to be friend instead with him (that hug scene from the trailer)
Phu didn't want to get drunk or drink alcohol, as the last time he got drunk (when in university), he and Nan accidentally kissed each other (probably their second kiss after the ping pong ball one).
Phu may be a coward for running away instead of settling his feelings for Nan, but I can't deny that he's really such a gentleman, as he didn't want being drunk to make him get carried away, lose control (with Nan also being drunk) and kiss Nan again. (That's what I think)
Note: in BL series and real life, being drunk can be associated with one losing inhibitions and reveal their true feelings. So, as we can see in end of EP 2, it may be a hint that Nan actually also loves Phu, and he was the one who started the kisses first.
Woah Benedict, I did not expect you here with the stats, for a min I thought I was on the BB page haha π65…
Yeah of course, the MSP team did really well.
Actors play a major role in boosting a series, and for relative newcomers, they made a rather stellar performance and audience were quite engaged too :)
Seeing part of the board below, just wanna say that, each one of us are free to like or dislike a series or a genre or a type of show.
But, we can't impose what we think of something on others. Each one of us have different opinions, yes, and that is perfectly fine. But, when we share something, it is important that we substantiate our point of view with evidence, and respect others' point of view.
And even so, we should not make generalisations and assumptions, especially if we haven't really watched the show. This is just my opinion.
(Plus, the way we present our thoughts is important. If we want to get our point(s) across, how we do it, is really crucial)
I am loving this series...the chemistry they have!!!!its almost similar to the prequel..except for one thing gigi…
I don't think that's Gie Gie in the prequel episode. It's likely another girl from university (I will need to rewatch the episode again to remember the detail)
EP 3: It has been enjoyable for me. And it was quite good with the twist and turns in the plot and story. I like the way they presented it. The cinematography and image quality was quite superb too.
I am really touched with just how selfless Phupha is, and just how much he cared for Nan, that he was willing to do so much for Nan (to the point of studying with him in Communication Arts, something that Nan himself didn't know about)
Linking to the short prequel episodes and up to now, so far the important message for us is, if we love someone, we must show it no matter what, and if possible, to tell the other how we feel. This is of course easier said than done. It was their undeclared feelings that led to misunderstandings and miscommunications - that led to Phu running away from Nan in the first place.
I have a feeling that their feelings are really mutual. It's just that Phu realised his feelings earlier, while Nan was still likely unsure what kind of feeling he had for Phu. In EP 3, when Nan was asked to choose between Phu and Party on who he would go home with from the bar, he chose Phu, and given everything he did for Phu's sake, even to the point of going all out to ask the coffee shop owner's son, it is obvious that Phu is the one Nan loves too.
There will be drama and emotional roller coaster coming soon, I am sure of it, but I am optimistic that in the end, Nan will choose Phu. Fingers crossed!!

Just my thoughts!
Just note that the short prequel episodes portray a different time frame and feel from this series which takes place ten years later.
Personally, I want to follow their story to the end, whatever it may be, hopefully a good ending!

Phupha: 'If I really like something, I'll stick to it' (scene after the song at the bar, as they talk about choice of products for skin)
Nan, he's actually referring to you, you know? (Too bad he didn't realise it yet, and Phu is still afraid of telling his feelings outright)
Actors play a major role in boosting a series, and for relative newcomers, they made a rather stellar performance and audience were quite engaged too :)
