I wrote almost everything you said to a friend earlier today! I jokingly asked if the last two episodes were written…
Glad that we thought alike!
Apparently at first the series was supposed to have 16 episodes, it seems like they squished 11-12 episodes into 10, which isnât that big of a difference and only made some things feel rushed, but they they had to squish the remaining material of like 4 episodes into just 2, which resulted in what we got. Because of the length change they probably had to make some changes in the original drama plot as well. I donât know from what moment was it changed from 16 to 12 episodes, it might have been before filming, or it might have been in the middle of filming, which could have made an impact on story consistency. Those are my assumptions.
More thoughts with spoilers... they spent way too much time in the last two episodes on things that didn't help…
Exactly, they also did basically nothing regarding that plot point with his ex-friend (the girl that was calling him throughout the series). From my understanding, and from what we got in the drama: she unintentionally caused a fire in their dorm or whatever (which was actually probably a fault of GyeonUâs bad luck/curse accumulating in people around him) and the blame for it went to GyeonU. Now, she seemed to be in a hospital for a long time (GyeonU congratulates her for going home after the first timeskip, thatâs like a year from the beginning of the series, and this only assuming that the fire happened not long before the fist episode), and with how she repeatedly said she hated him, Iâd have expected that she suffered burns in that fire, or maybe she fell during it or something due to smoke and got injured (or the smoke inhalation messed with her health idk) that altered her look (like a burn on her cheek or something) or mobility etc. that changed her life or she most likely wouldnât be able to do archery anymore. But then they show her all fine, they made up, and it 3 seconds this whole part of the story was resolved, they had buildup for nothing (also with what they showed of her, her hate towards GyeonU is totally disproportionate to what happened with him and her, like there was actually no explanation). I just, I donât know, itâs a rom-com but thereâs a fair point of angst in this drama too, and theyâre not afraid to show the more âroughâ and serious/hard hitting stuff when it comes to the shamanism-related plots (baby dying, shaman dying, suicide etc), so I was hoping theyâd make this part of the story more serous and âtragicâ too. Instead itâs like they dismissed this part of the plot. When you look at it from the perspective of the whole drama, itâs almost useless (the conclusion of just finding happiness and peace etc is good, it was nice, it also ties to the scene when GyeonU was cornered by his ex-teammates in the bathroom - on a side note, that scene also strengthens the impression that something serous happened with that girl, with how her teammates speak about her, which further makes the ending of that storyline feel weird - but it could have been brought up regardless, and making the situation more serious wouldnât hurt the ending message).
Iâm not saying that Iâd want her to suffer more exclusively because itâd fit more, but they never really explained what happened with her because of that fire, just that she hates GyeonU and feels guilty, so I really feel like it was incomplete and glossed-over just to get to the end of the drama (if it was supposed to be like that, why put so much emphasis on the phone calls earlier in the drama, if it wasnât supposed to be a bigger plot or a more serious situation??).
The cinematography was actually really nice and the shaman stuff were also very intresting. Wanted more of yeomhwa…
The shamanism stuff was well done and very engaging, I really liked it too. I canât find any other drama where itâs a big plot point and itâs so well done.
Can you tell me whatâs the relationship between yeomhwa and the fl mum? They seem close
The FL mum is also Yeomhwaâs âmotherâ. She adopted Yeomhwa and raised her, but Yeomhwa was hurt and turned evil, and abandoned her mother. Then the mother âGeneral Dongcheonâ happened to meet little FL who was abandoned, and took her in too, as her daughter. So the FL and Yeomhwa are lowkey adopted siblings.
I still relly love the whole shamanism aspect of this drama, it was done so well and it was consistently an important part of the story (some dramas tend to lose the initial plot part for the sake of the romance shenanigans and I often donât like it, since a drama is advertised as one thing but turns to another mid way - itâs not the case here), I canât find anything else like it.
Itâs great, and I love Cho Yihyun in this role and genre too! And Choo Young Woo⊠I could watch them play main roles in different shamanism-related dramas a dozen times. Or in all kinds of dramas. I feel like they nicely fit each other on screen, I hope theyâll star in something other together too. I really like them together in this drama.
One thing Iâd have loved to see is for it to have more instances where GyeonU walks upside down into the shrine. The visual of that scene was sick, and when it happened again when it showed the way of his death (soaked in water from drowning or standing in the flames from the burning building) it was absolutely amazing and a hard hitting scene. I wish we got a bit more of that (like him walking upside down when the suicide ghost appeared, or on another instance when he was made to visit SeongA and still was under the 21-day curse). They could have gone a little darker on some points of the negative energy/ghosts etc/dark shamanism.
Am I a bit disappointed by the last 2 episodes? Yes, yes I am. But I still really like this drama. I still think itâs a very good drama. I feel like, with timeskips⊠like, the plot was so tight before, but once we come across a bigger timeskip it ends up becoming loose. Like, the plot was plotting so tightly before, like a tightly knitted fabric, but once thereâs a big timeskip the loops in the fabric get bigger and bigger, and it all gets loose, it connects but the wind easily gets through all the holes, itâs not plotting like it was before. Does that even make sense lol? Like itâs harder to connect to it, while watching, and itâs harder to connect it with the very tightly knitted story from before (especially if you have a time limit on that story too, like here it was 21 days and then some, so maybe like a month? thatâs a pretty short time), itâs like a scale jump (from small scale look to big scale look). But the story isnât bad per se. It just feels disconnected. But as I said, I still like it.
I feel like I liked this drama so much as it was airing, that I made myself have this huge expectations, not even for something specific but just for a feeling that I felt, like amazement or something, that I became underwhelmed by the end, and thus a bit let down. Itâs not my fault that I enjoyed it so much to the point of âbreakingâ too early, the story could have been developed a bit differently in the last two episodes, it could have been better (although I donât even know exactly how đ€Š I just know that there are the feelings, the reaction that it could have, should have given me). But itâs still good, i still like it, and I still think that itâs one of the best dramas of this year. Itâs well done after all, the sets, music and acting are all very good too.
By the way, how come people say it way good until halfway? It kept on mostly the same level for 10 episodes!
Iâve got to say, that I would have preferred if they kept Yeomhwa evil till the end. Because like⊠all that effort for nothing? Her character development happened all off screen (I mean, sheâs not the main character so, I would want to push her too much) so itâs hardly believable, a bit. Not full on evil, since she did tone it down and she changed too over the course of the episode like 6-10 or 6-11, but still rather bad, hurting and with bad intention, like she was in episodes 9-10, or maybe if she passed because of that ritual at the endâŠ
Although I liked her last severe, with GyeonU and butterfly, that was fitting.
Since apparently they had one more freaking year till graduation, I feel like everything would have been fine if they just made this all happen in the 1.5 years (no problem with him being an archer either, high schoolers can go to the Olympics etc and heâd be 19 anyway) and make her go back, in time to take the photo or something on graduation day. Then they could have an âupdateâ kind of timeskip to show them doing good etcâŠ
I think it kinda depends on how people view the 1-10 scale to be honest. For example, on mdl in general, a rating…
Iâve only given 10 once so far, because I really liked it, and I think that objectively it's a good drama too. It's not the greatest though, it's not even my favorite drama, but I just feel like it has everything it needs to have (it fits it's genre perfectly, plot is quite well executed, the ending is satisfactory and well fitted and I like the "message" it carries).
I guess everyone really has their own criteria and way of rating.
(Just an observation) Funny how people are rating this based on many reviews and comments I read. Some love it…
I think it kinda depends on how people view the 1-10 scale to be honest. For example, on mdl in general, a rating about 7.5 is an âeh âŠâ to okay drama and good or very good dramas are usually ranked starting between 8-8.5, but for me personally 7 is a high rating, and a good drama is a 7-8 or between. Now, if the person goes along the mdl rating norms, or if theyâre going to rate accordingly to their own criteria, the numbers will be different. I donât care much about the mdl rating (unless a drama would be rated super low), so I have dramas that I love but recognize their lower general quality, so Iâve rated them like 5 out of 10, even though theyâre one of my favourites. Someone else might completely disregard my logic in this situation, and rate dramas based on a completely different set of reasons etc.
Or maybe itâs not that deep and Iâm just weird, idk
[watching EP 11] So⊠did everyone in their class just think that GyeonU had like a psychotic breakdown or something for like one week (idk how long that was), when Bongsu was in control of his body and was being extroverted, fighting (especially because he seemed to be abnormally strong in GyeonUâs body), making friends and shouting about kissing SeongA etc, and then he just went to normal?? Did like nobody bat an eye?? It was very sad how SeongA commented on how nobody really noticed that it wasnât GyeonU anymore etc. I completely understood that plot point and I liked it, but then, wasnât it weird when he went to back to being himself? Wouldnât someone notice then? I feel like they left that part of the plot underdeveloped, or rather without a proper finish. Iâm still confused over it, like⊠Iâm not, it wasnât dealt with right. Bongsu literally had huge impact on GyeonUâs reputation among his classmates, and teachers and on how they treated him (since they made friends with Bongsu in GyeonUâs body, and what about his crashout about archery in front of the trainer and club members? Like thatâs definitely bound to have some consequences and be super awkward/weird for GyeonU afterwards - did GyeonU even know what Bongsu was doing in his body during that time? Was he even aware? Or did he just go back to school and was super confused about everything/how people treated him?), so itâs a pretty big deal, what happened after GyeonU came back. Itâs an important point, especially to GyeonUâs character, why didnât they cover this plot line more (to like, properly finish it)?
