Crown prince is not a bad villain at all in the novel. Just a puppet manipulated by the elder princess with not much intelligence. However, the second prince is more hidden. In the novel, we learn mid-novel that he colluded with the elder princess in the two assassination attempts (when he killed the 8th ranked martial and when Waner brother was killed by WuZhu).
In the novel, everything is revealed bit by bit. The clues are given little by little. Fan Xian is an extreme strategist, a genius planner, a cunning scheming guy. He only wants power on his own to protect his family understanding that the other power is the emperor. He understands early on that he cannot be a puppet.
Oh, and he met Chen PingPing for the first time right after the examination, when he was forced to publicly reveal that he was the Overwatch Council commissioner.
Mao Ni wrote a very (VERY) similar second novel with the same kind of plot featuring earth destruction and a hero reborn. Although part 1 is missing on Amazon (which is quite stupid), part 2, 3, and 4 are available. Part 1 can be found unofficially translated on the web. When I say unofficially, I mean it is either badly AI-translated or manually translated with a few grammar/typos, but it's still better than having no part 1 at all.
Funny enough, I loved season 1. It was not copy verbatim as novel but close enough. Fan Xian personality was very similar: cunning, arrogant, lovable.
I really didn't like season 2 because they focused on the second prince as a villain, added cringeworthy comedy with yodeling sounds, and removed the real villain (the elder princess). Everything seemed chaotic to me. Most of all, Fan Xian seemed like a crying baby puppet.
I'm looking forward to watching season 3, but I'm not expecting much from it after season 2 It is the last chapter 7 of the novel packed with martial fights, two major battlefields, the deaths of two grandmasters, and the Wu Zhu/Emperor/Fan Xian fight. It could be really good if they have the budget, but if they don't, it might be a flop. We'll see how it turns out.
