If the person who visited the set has read the novel, wouldn't say the tone is similar. It's about political intrigues, a bit comedy to relax the serious mood. TROTAR is a good rom-com drama, a totally different genre.

Yes, 90% same. The biggest difference is the final revenge part. XW really rebelled and killed the emperor, the emperor killed consort Xue shu and his mother. The emperor is more cruel in the novel. Also, ZZ is reborn with memory, You Fang Yin used to be a modern soul transported in the past life, which makes her last sentences before death meaningful in the drama if you know this connection.
The novel has more narrations of XW and JXN interactions in the past life. 18+ staff is little, actually, only found in about two chapters, and a very vague description. Just skip it is fine.

Yes. As explained by @Alila Nguyen, to be brief, she's afraid the miserable fate of ZZ's past life would happen again if she continues to stick with him and he falls in love with her. In the past life, ZZ loved her deeply and sacrificed for her. She had to cut the relationship before he would love her deeply in this life. She thought she always brought him trouble and he was too loyal to her.

If you can watch serious historical drama, I highly recommend Advisor's Alliance and its season two Growling Tiger, Roaring Dragon. Please skip the rating on MDL, because it's a very heavy historical drama, maybe a bit hard for watchers to understand without background knowledge. But it's very successful in China, it's an epic, more than a master piece!

They are different genres although named under Palace. Yanxi Palace is a harem drama, focused on calculating ladies fighting each other. Kunning Palace is a rebirth story about FL trying to change the fates and morally-grey ML plan for revenge.
