It's more important to look at who the director is (after two disasters I'll avoid the one who did Yunxi in the future). Legend of Yunxi is a classic example of a drama that has a totally inflated rating on MDL due to the presence of some idol boys in the cast.
I think it was ep. 3 when the FL was taken to the ML's residence. The maid kept eating stuff and the bodyguard just gave her that blank stare. I don't know what it was but that scene just made me roll on the couch laughing.

I'm pretty sure as the drama progresses these voices will disappear. He is believable as a seasoned general and even though I cannot say that I find him particularly attractive (nothing to do with his age...), his acting skills and stage presence still make it a pleasure to watch him in every scene. Lately, there's been far too many pretty faces who cannot act, so I'm enjoying this!
Three episodes in and I'm absolutely loving this! The pacing is good and so far without any fillers, the story is interesting, the FL is a courageous and clever woman and the colours are very nice. The ML really fits this role and his acting as the cold and silent general is pretty good. I like the subtle bits of humour in the story, that scene between the FL's maid and the ML's stoic bodyguard was hilarious!

I remember a certain recently aired xianxia drama (which shall remain unnamed) where every second comment on the MDL page was about the dreamy looks of the ML, sadly this isn't enough to entertain me for 30 long episodes. Also, it's not like we have to choose between good acting skills and good looks. There are quite a few talented mature actors who are as hot as it gets.

There are currently two main problems with C-dramas: a) Instead of having capable actors, they're filled with eye-candy to draw in the teenage crowds. b) The plots are dumbed down to pre-school level so that even the people who keep fast-forwarding half of the scenes instead of watching them can still follow.

I think the problem with CZ wasn't just his co-star (she may be slightly better now, but her acting is still cringe-worthy...) It was the whole way this role was written and directed, condeming him to keep a stiff face not showing any emotion for 90% of the time. Not to mention that dreadful clownish face-whitening/make-up. I've just recently seen him in Fairyland Lovers (he is the ONLY attraction in that one). Man, that guy can give you an acting firework when his face is allowed to move!

- A walk through the Lantern Festival
- A scene under some falling flower petals
etc. etc.
I actually hope in this one we will be spared some of these clichés...
