I prefer San Lang because he is righting a wrong. I dislike Pei Yan because he is a puppet fighting for power…
It’s one of the failures of the drama that it never makes Pei Yan’s purpose clear.
In the novel he wants to establish a government which is based on Confucianism and consolidated power in one hand (preferably his 😉 but he later gives up that idea). This is to replace the rule of the current emperor who keeps balance by creating strife between the different factions in court. It makes his throne stable, but it is the common people who suffer from the permanent instability.
Pei Yan’s father was (indirectly) killed by one of the emperor’s schemes, but he never talks about revenge.

Yes, I did. I know he asked her to stay because he wanted to protect her, though not in the obsessive way he “protects” her in the drama. It was quite clear that he knew his mistake and would never make a pass at her again. I can understand Jiang Ci not trusting him and running away, but I also believe that his offer was genuine. Do you think that if he had wanted to keep her, she would have gotten very far?

I find that very hard to imagine. Jeremy has always been an actor, not an idol, he doesn’t have toxic fans. I’ve been reading quite a lot of comments from his fans on WB and right now they are all rather dissatisfied with the role, none of them would ask for more of that.
Could you please elaborate where you found this information to make sure it’s not just another vicious rumour spread against him?

In the novel, did PY like JC? How similar are their relationship in the novel and the drama?
He was very different in the novel.
He made an ill-judged and violent pass at her but after that he left her alone. He was never crazy obsessed like this and it never clouded his judgement.

Pei Yan has a purpose, but the scriptwriters decided to cut all these lines and replace them by a love-brain.

What are they saying about him? His role may be annoying and unlikable it’s okay to dislike Pei Yan but not…
I only have limited access to the Chinese sites. He’s been on 9 HotSearches on Weibo since this morning and none of his fans are copying the hashtags so they clearly aren’t anything good. Instead his fans complain about bullying and his fans are normally rather laid back.

Yes, if he is getting under people’s skin, it’s because he is a very good actor. He shouldn’t be attacked with people asking for his screen time to be reduced and what no, just for doing what the script is asking him to do.

I know, I’ve read it. It would have been better in Wei Zhao’s case as well because unlike the multiple stabbing and choking, she never suffered from the poison that he gave her. It would have made them getting together less of a leap to many viewers

Here’s a clip of Jeremy Tsui promoting the drama for Hongling Gold TV

I really don’t know what to think of Jeremy’s treatment in this production.

His role, which in the novel was a complicated, scheming and intelligent character, was reduced to a mindless lovebrain, removing any depth and the best lines from it, almost as if someone had been scared of him turning this into a second Yuwen Hu.
His role is officially a main role with the related workload and screen presence, yet his pay cheque was that of a support role.
Now, on top of it all, he is getting vilified and insulted by some crazies among the fans.

And yet, it’s always him who is wheeled out when it comes to promoting the show to passersby.

I can only hope and pray that he will find better opportunities in the future that truly value his goodwill and his talent.

I would have preferred him poisoning her. It would be more in line with a calculating PY.

Never read the novel, but to me Pei Yan would be much more interesting and complex if it weren't for these scenes…
All these scenes that feel so idiotic and irrational for someone who is supposed to be a powerful, calculating minister have been invented by the scriptwriters to make Pei Yan more unappealing. They were probably afraid that if they leave Pei Yan too much of the depth and intelligence he had in the novel, Jeremy would turn the character into a second Yuwen Hu. Not a nice person, but fascinating.

“Keeping the essence of the characters”? Certainly not in Pei Yan’s case or anyone of his clan. He has been…
In the novel he wqs in love with her, without even realising it himself until she said she was leaving.. He was never “obsessed” to the point of giving up or changing any of his schemes for her. When he had to make a choice he still chose his political vision (something which he doesn’t even have in the drama) over her.
If you want to know the difference, just ask yourself, in the novel, who knew of Pei Yan’s feelings for Jiang Ci? That’s right, NOBODY! This Pei Yan had dignity and once he knew she was with Wei Zhao he never interfered.

He is officially back. You can read more about the details on his page.
Ah, sorry, I misunderstood. With “his page” I meant the actor page here on MDL. You get there by clicking on his name in the cast list.

“Keeping the essence of the characters”? Certainly not in Pei Yan’s case or anyone of his clan. He has been lobotomised and turned into a love-crazed idiot who makes a fool of himself at every corner and his mother and uncle have been vilified beyond recognition!

OK, watched up to episode 17... the only episode where Pei Yan being Pei Yan from the novel is episode 14, finally…
Indeed they have ruined this wonderful and complex character beyond recognition.
We get to see nothing of his hardships, his inner turmoil and his loneliness. He has even lost all dignity and restraint of the original Pei Yan the way they make him fawn over the FL.
I really feel bad for Jeremy having invested so much sweat into such a shitty role! May whoever coerced him into taking this role rot in hell.

Would you suggest reading the novel to understand the story better, or is it best seen as two different things?
It wouldn’t help at all because it is a COMPLETELY different story. If parts of the drama version appear confusing it is because the scriptwriters were off sick the day that logic was handed out.

It’s not just about revenge, his people are still being enslaved, forced into prostitution, killed, and treated…
Yes, the drama announcement portraying him as a powerful calculating minister was a case of false advertising.
This Pei Yan couldn’t calculate his way out of a cardboard box.
The scriptwriters have totally ruined this character for no reason whatsoever.

OMG OMG the actors back then! They're so young and gorgeous. My girl PMY hasn't aged a bit!
The main difference is that this was produced before the stupid whitening filters came into fashion. People look natural and healthy.
