I think the mom is just frustrated not having the life she wanted growing up, so she put some of those frustration onto her children and husband, and her family seem to understood her so they're forgiving her. I think she's also lonely being home all alone. The mom does improve eventually. I think she also grew up in a society that value boy over girl so her priority also screwed by the different treatments she's giving to her daughter and son, it will becomes more clear if you keep watching. This drama did a very good job showing the family conflicts between the older and younger generation from the interaction in the mai's family.
