Who said that will hinder her strength, the way he let her hear him talk about his business or let her offer her opinion about his business just shows a level of trust he hasn't share with his other women. He's also very affectionate towards her. I can't help but compare this drama to yanxi palace, wei yingluo and the emperor always playing mind game, she could never be truly truthful to him, I didn't feel her deep affection for the emperor or vice versa between the two of them like I see in this drama between zi Jin and zhan ji. Zi Jin is so different from wei yingluo, she's gentle, affectionate, and do many things for zhan ji as a wife does for her husband. She doesn't have to play game with the emperor to keep him interested in her.

The production of this drama spend six months doing research just on the recipes and presentation for this drama, so maybe it's your aesthetic that's the problem I didn't see anything wrong with the presentation just a bit simple, I guess the aesthetic of that time is just different from today's standard. Watch some of the vids on YouTube that talks about the making of this drama, and the painstaking efforts go into producing all these different delicacies, the costumes and headdresses, such a great production ^^

I think the empress dowager see something in zi Jin and feel she's the one who could be his partner to help him as his wife like how she did for her husband, being an empress is to care for the people and think for the benefits of the country and not just for her own benefits. I don't think it was wrong what he was doing. The food service was accused of poisoning the empress, the only one who could absolve them of guilt is the empress, and that's why he let her watch while they were being interrogated. This play into her compassion as a physician if they're not guilty, then she will be the one sending someone innocent to die. It's because of zi Jin's silence, that zhan ji has to resort to such a tactic to help Zi ping get her justice. The empress dowager is the one that accused the imperial food service, so the only one who could help them is the empress.

I always feel the empress is not a bad person, she proves that by begging for the imperial food service and absolved them of all guilts in her illness. Zi Jin gotten angry for being tricked by her friend and her husband, wonder if it was you yi fan idea after all it was him that told the emperor to do the interrogation. Zhan ji is angry with zi jin because she refuses to confide in him and treat him like a stranger rather than her husband, he's the emperor he could have help Zi ping out, but she would rather relies on herself and rather uses her body to test the medicine to prove her friend innocent.
