Ok, I just finished the first two episodes. This show is incredible. I didn't see any of it coming and only now, at the end of the second episode, am I considering the title of show.
These three kids are acting like they have been forever. Zi Shen, really has been in more projects than many adult actors several times his age but the for other two, this was their debut and Sheng De - Pu Pu, she was 10 years old when this was made. I'm incredibly impressed with all of this.
I prolly won't come back til I've finished this bc of spoilers.
If you are on the fence about this show - just give it 10 minutes. It will hook you in 10 minutes.
how is it propaganda? the second sino Japanese war was a very real thing and the Japanese atrocities are very…
I wholeheartedly believe that Mao was genuine in his cause for the greater good of China. I believe that when he set out to change China had he been merely power hungry he would not have been able to be as passionate as he must have been - the people that joined him and his cause did so bc he made them feel that China deserved better, that they deserved better and so they too found the passion necessary for revolution. If Mao had not believed the things he was saying - I don't believe that I would know his name.
Its good you've noted that people change. Everything does really. Mao set out to attain power and power does corrupt but it is the journey that most changes people. The pursuit of power and keeping it. The Mao that unified the CCP and China had a different perspective than the Mao that set out. This still doesn't lesson him but it obviously contributed to his very black and white decision making later on. Mao was a human, like of all of us.
Most people will dismiss you - tell them anyways. I see history as the progression of humanity to the point where all of us are capable of taking the point of view that you and I have in this conversation.
When all of us can see the world for what it is - we don't need leaders anymore. We can have AI determine the maintaining of things, general basis of taxes and whatnots - I'm being fr. If we can think for ourselves about how to behave together - than we truly do not need leaders anymore.
With no leaders, none with power above others, there will no games of power, no power struggles, no wars. Essentially, humanity just needs to stop needing parents and become an adult and behave as we know we should. In some respects I'm endlessly pitching that philosophy in different form. Don't get frustrated, just have fun with it.
I don't say stuff like this to everyone - not everyone can hear it. They maybe could tho 😉

I"m an American - there is nothing about the Republican Government that was stable or valid, it most certainly warranted revolutionary action taken by its citizenry. Communism was all the rage at the time - it makes sense the ideals and fundamental principles of such political ideology would resonate with the Chinese People - as their is a more communalistic cultural mindset within China and that obviously comes at the expense of individuality. None of that surprises me.
To the actual Revolution and its leadership - I assure you that it was about power, Mao needed it to fix China so of course he set out to attain it. That doesn't lessen him - if not Mao, there would have been another bc the society had already decided.
The propaganda part is that you are still fighting this fight a century after it happened...

I think it is very important to note that the atrocities committed during WWII were the result of Fascist belief that some humans are less than others. It is not propaganda. It is also not something limited only to the Nazi's and Imperial Japan - all human beings are capable of doing terrible things - it is our shared humanity that prevents such atrocities.
The situation in Germany and Japan was simply US vs THEM rhetoric taken to the limit until it became believed and institutionally accepted throughout their societies. Rendering people less than people will always end badly.
It is very important that we not forget that this did happen and that it cannot ever be allowed to happen again.
Chinese has developed its literature far before the West did, they have started Printing Press and Industrialism…
That is why I brought up African literature - bc both the West and the East have largely ignored African accomplishments but they are absolutely making contributions, so how can we rank global literature without accounting for all of it.
You have brought something to my attention tho. I'm very limited in my languages - I kno English and a fair amount of German, I've also been exposed to a lot of Latin, I do all right reading French - less so Italian oddly enough. I have like a 1st grade level of Spanish. My point is, I'm very much aware that language itself determines a fair amount. There are words that have no English equivalent for example. That is true for all languages. Which brings me to my question for you.
Can Chinese literature be translated into English? All things must become English to be Global. It is the lingua franca of humanity, hopefully forever considering the extent of current use.

I don't really think of it like this. I don't think you can rank quality like that. In college I was exposed to several African novels that I would never have found on my own or ever been exposed to that were incredible pieces of literature. China has added literary epics to the Global History of Humanity but many works are not even accessible to the Global audience as they are untranslated into English.
Well, I'm not sure I would have watched this had I realized but I'm glad I did. This is real life - almost too real tbh. I've had an almost identical conversation as the leads in episode 6 - it was a little surreal. Having someone that obviously loves you, that you also love, explain to you that they want a family, which of course you also want, but that we wouldn't make the right kind of family is quite cruel but its also heartbreaking bc you are also watching someone that you love deny who they are at a level that practically guarantees unhappiness in their future. You can only lie to yourself for so long, thats life.
This show will likely become my example from here on out of how Gay relationships differ from hetero ones - specifically regarding things like SA.
Qi Lu may break rules to get Qin Xiao to be honest with himself. He has been very clear that he doesn't want a relationship more than a friend, he has established very clear boundaries and apologized for misleading him, he has said no.
It's eerie to me bc I'm doing my thesis and I've decided on appropriation of art. Death of marat and girl with…
China is no stranger to Western Culture - the educated in China likely know more about it than the average American. Education in America is pretty bad as evidenced by our last election. Obviously the paintings you selected are very famous - Girl with Pearl Earring is one of most famous paintings in general. How are you approaching art of that kind from the lens of cultural appropriation? I'm actually quite curious, I've no opinion - to me cultural appropriation is something you hear about every Halloween when someone decides it will be funny to dress up like an Indian Chief.
I hope China figures things out soon. They want so badly to be the number one country they don't realize the only real way to do that is to become the number one culture. So many people around the world discovered Chinese media bc of BL and then they shut it down - not really a good way to present on the global stage and set them back a bit fr.
Like, BL alone is evidence that China has some issues to work out - there are a lot of gay people in China. There is a single generation that had 25 million more men than women - so there is literally some real life BL stuff going on in China rn. Its like an identity crisis really - China can't accept itself.
There was one comment of that nature, and it's exaggerated but not totally without merit. There's a segment of…
I just read a comment on a Pinoy BL trailer written by a 75 year old man. I've actually seen a fair amount of that recently. Youtube introduced them - probably thru Heartstopper content.
All Gay men on earth are like a bear to honey for this content - as its about us. You project, we do not.
There are roughly 8 Billion people on earth today (8.145b) in the US apparently around 7% of the pop identifies as GLBTQ - lets assume that number applies to the global pop as well. 560 million ppl could possibly identify with this content but I'm going to go ahead and divide that number by 2, so as to really get a good idea of how many gay men, in specific could potentially discover this content - any point in life will do, they will watch it.
280,000,000 Gay Men on Earth approx - that number drops a bit, some men live in places where they cant be gay or get online, let take out 80 million to be conservative in our estimates. 200,000,000 - now only 69% of the global population has solid internet access, so lets take out 31% more Gay Men =
138,000,000 Million Gay Men - that is the net cast with every single one of these shows, each time one airs, 138,000,000 Gay Men are all potential and very likely watchers - they need only kno of it. Not every show gets all of us, or at the same time, but even now the writing is all over all the walls about where this will be in 5 more years.
The big BLs each year will get like 80-100+ million Gay Male viewers almost by default/automatically. From everywhere on earth but all with similar interests, tastes, likes - they are all GAY, super easy to sell stuff to a crowd of essentially similar, same gendered ppl - isn't it obvious actually what type of companies and products will be financing future big BL productions?
For comparison - the most viewed Superbowl ever, 2024, had 123.7 million average viewers.
This is why I say stuff like "Someday the value of the Thai BL Market will transcend the value of all Thai Marketable Media" - bc it will. Bc of Gay Men. This little blip here could sell a company on an advertising spot, kinda obvious once pointed out - don't you think?
The female viewers are great in number but how many are there really?
I don't know why only a small fraction of the series is given such a high priority that it seems as if this fraction…
Rain had me at that one scene with the raining and where he is holding the umbrella for Payu while he is changing a flat tire - the one when Payu takes off his mask and Rain exclaims how handsome he is. Not sure if you remember the scene exactly but that is when I decided I liked Rain, I feel like that was pretty early on, so why not Payu fall for Rain in that same moment I did as a viewer?
I've also only seen the 2nd half of this show once - sus we just have different tastes bc Unforgotton Night is near unparalleled in its mastery 😉😁😐
Whats the story? Rain thinks he likes Ple but she is obsessed with Payu, so Rain becomes curious of Payu right…
Haha, I do watch them and I dont watch all the school shows anymore but Im going to watch all the good ones forever to makeup for not having such content when I was young - its like literally seeing how far we've come in some respects. Makes me feel better about all the aids movies I saw til my 30s.
I've also noticed something - I still like all the BL actors that Ive always liked - Singto or Ohm are great OG examples. They, like all of us age and as long as they keep acting I will keep watching them, like any other favorite actor. Bc I will and Im assuming others too - they will prolly have acting work as long as they want to... but their roles will change over time. Teachers not students etc.
So, eventually I will see a lot of BL that has nothing to do with a school regardless what I watch now. Plus this genre is only about 5 years old - maybe in 10 years there will be hardly any school shows.
For now, I'll watch all the quality productions - hopefully someday that alone can't narrow the field enough 😄
There was one comment of that nature, and it's exaggerated but not totally without merit. There's a segment of…
You are quite silly if you think this content is only being made for women these days. You can see from the stories themselves that men are becoming more and more the target demographic for this content. I feel like this is rather obvious simply from the fact that most of the OG BL tropes are no longer depicted in BL.
I'm not saying that BL is for gay men - I don't why it has to be for women, it can be for all of us.

The cultural revolution in China essentially negates the history you mentioned.

Qi Lu absolutely should ignore all of that.
Thats the difference. Clearest I've ever seen it.
