This might be an unpopular opinion, but whatever. I was kinda hoping to avoid this, but I may be falling into…
My sentiments as well, Turkish Rose. Younger Hye Jin certainly didn't like the younger Seong Joon for his looks, it was for his personality! So it would be nothing short of double standards, if it isn't true in reverse. It just reinforces negative stereotypes. Girls have to be "pretty" to get on in the world and get their man, but guys can just rely on their "wit" to bag the girl, or their "money." Tired of it, man.
from siblings to lovers...What next? ;D I like it so far! And Hwang Jung Eum is overrated?? Oh please... -___-
The word overrated, is overrated. It's overused by pessimists, detracting from it's secular meaning, so when something ACTUALLY overrated comes along, we are forced to outdo ourselves in our descriptions :P Vicious cycles, my friend, viscous cycles...
She is bad as cop. She do not have the body or athletism to cop. All cops in bride are kids.. they all read scripts…
She actually represents Korea in her national team for boxing. She might even go to Rio for the Olympics. That makes her a proper, bonafide athlete. Haha. Goes to show how much you know :P
It's curious you think she can act, because a lot of people have hated on her acting abilities in the past. A bit like you hating on Jang Hyuk and Lee Jun Ki currently :P
I spoke too soon. The 1st episode was great. What's with the over-exaggerated slapstick in the second? Seriously. It's painful to watch. People who blend into the background, don't run away like they're in a Benny Hill scene, screeching loudly. And why is Seo Joon a jerk now? Don't get it. Part of the draw, was the male lead wouldn't be the "douchebag" and he would be the "nice, kind one" instead. Maybe Hye Jin brings the worse out of him?
Some short thoughts: For now, the only thing I don’t like about She Was Pretty; Why are “big hair” and red…
Ha, sorry I deleted the comment straight after I wrote it, so it looks like you're talking to yourself. Again, sorry about that! I think a lot of viewers are hoping, they don't beautify her and keep her like she is. I am 100% sure there will be a scene, where the male lead takes the female, and buys her a "makeover" because that scene is necessary in every Kdrama EVER. Oh well. Let's hope when that scene comes, we can all grin and bear it! :)
Positives. Great, solid female friendship, where the females aren't competing or being catty to each other. Likable cast. Being able to resonate with the idea, of wanting to be seen as people "remembered us" and scared of disappointing them with a "new us." That's something that personally touches me. It was hilarious too, especially when Hye Jin thought she'd lost a front tooth!
I can't understand why everyone loves this drama. I just dropped it after 15 minutes! It was so boring and the…
Really, kiki, really? You want to engage in a battle of wills? :D Anyways, thanks I appreciate that we all have different taste. If you say I have bad taste, because I hate stalker dudes, then I'll just kick myself until I do :P I mean, what is wrong with me!!!!!
I think you might get less flak if you changed the sentence about cutting one's hair forcibly and used the word…
I might as well say, that last week, a couple of people jumped me, and they cut all my hair off, and it was like a "gang rape." What? I can't use that comparison? Are you offended? But whhhhyyyy.... It's just my opinion based on the life experiences I've had! Doesn't matter what you've experienced or went through. Now Back off!
With that logic, I'm done.
Last comment from me, I promise.
Well that's an important subject to bring up! I do think each and every topic you brought up deserve an article…
"I'd definitely feel raped."
Sorry for getting straight to the point but If you have been violated in this extremely personal and disgusting way, then I recant my previous argument. Clearly we have different barometers. It's just...the use of your terminology is all wrong and so many people use it casually - they need to be called out on it. Time and time again. Until the point gets across. Using the word "rape" to say it's similar to another assault (or is the same) is NOT OKAY.
There are many different words in the English Language, use them. Violation. Degradation. Humiliation. Which might also fall under the "rape" category, but rape is the physical act of penetration of the vagina, anus or mouth of another person without their consent, which is not the same "thing" as being held down, or having your hair cut off. And I think six or seven people are disagreeing with you here, about this point alone. Surely you must think about why we're ALL kicking up a fuss? It's not because we're doing it for light-heartedness sake. It's because we're genuinely concerned about your way of thinking and want to get to root of why you're using words like "rape" so flippantly. (Because you ARE belittling rape victims everytime you do so.)
Well that's an important subject to bring up! I do think each and every topic you brought up deserve an article…
On the grand scheme of things, yes rape is worse than getting your hair cut off. Do you not agree? This is my issue. You put it on a level playing field, which you shouldn't have done from the beginning.
Well that's an important subject to bring up! I do think each and every topic you brought up deserve an article…
Are you telling me that a woman with short hair or is bald has no femininity or strength? (Tell that to a chemo patient.) Let's go one step further, and say a woman with no breasts? Please volunteer in a rape crisis center. Put forward this question to them. I'm sure they'll give you the answer you are seeking (although you may not like it.) You've written such a brilliant article, all about spotting signs of abuse, but I'm staggered you don't know the difference between getting your hair cut off with force and rape.
Well that's an important subject to bring up! I do think each and every topic you brought up deserve an article…
@Ceki91....if it is not "real rape" then don't use the word "rape"
Period.
(And no, cutting someone's hair doesn't come close to it. No matter how long the girl takes to grow her hair. Who told you or taught you this? They need a stern word.)
I'm not familiar with non-korean dramas, but I'm really disturbed by the wrist grab, and the forceful kisses.…
Yes, I agree. The only thing Ceki91 misjudged in the article, is comparing a forcible haircut to rape. Bad call in my opinion. Rape is in a different ballpark of it's own, and is not something to be used for comparison sake lightly.
This is a very important article. Some people don't even realize this about dramas. The only thing I feel like…
"Males and females tend to slap each other around equally in dramas, and most of the time it's pretty excusable to me." Someday you'll reread that statement and cringe. Or if you don't, then there's no words.
However, I do think there is something critical about showing someone about to do something heinous, but pulling back for whatever reason. Or, they go ahead and do it anyway. Because it's only when things like happen, you know the true depth a character can go and most characters go through life, without really ever being tested. But these acts shouldn't be romanticized.
Brilliant article. Best I've read in ages. Wrist-grabs are awful to witness, unless you're being pulled from the path of a oncoming car and need saving. If I wanted to go in a particular direction, I'd walk, not stand there secretly hoping "someone will come along, and drag me." And either the victim mindlessly follows, or pulls and resists, I don't know which is worse. Mindlessly follows = complete submission to the aggressor. Pulls and resists = whatever, I'm still forcing you into submission. I'm actually worried some people think things like that are ok.
With that logic, I'm done.
