I think the director did create some level of cognitive dissonance given how some viewers are calling it hot and romanticizing it . It shows how easily people can be swayed by beauty while something evil as actually happening and I do think think that happens all the time even in reality when beautiful people get away with some awful stuff. People are more forgiving .

Like someone said there is a lot of stupid noble idiocy going around here . I also don’t get how she alone is oblivious to his identity when there have been enough direct hints. It’s like she is not even suspicious. Regardless of what his fate is going to be he needs to come clean to her .
