Yeah, I disagree. The time to pen this artful “end of betrothal” letter could have been used for an informal verbal warning by a trusted aid. Even young ML understood this was a sh*t move.

I truly do not believe FL is such a lowlife that she would lead SML on like that. Even when she went along sitting with SML according to first Madam’s schemes, she was always honest with him. And now that he is super sincere offering marriage without concubines and assistance in revenge, she says “yeah,I’ll marry you!” while secretly thinking “you wish, you’ll get my brat sister instead”? I think more highly of FL and doubt the writers would destroy her character like that. As SML’s father said when his wife complained FL does not love her son: “She’ll always treat him sincerely.” I’ll go with that.

The Lins, however, didn’t even warn the Shens about what was brewing (as ML suggested they should), but just broke the engagement, letting the Shens run into the open knife. Earlier foreknowledge by the Shens and a concerted reaction by both families might have prevented the worst. (Or maybe not, if Old Shen had been stubborn, but they would have had more time to prepare.) Sending the betrothal revocation without any explanation and a minute before all hell broke loose was vile.

Yes, that was the situation before today’s episodes. Now ML has said he can’t help her bring down her father, SML has promised her to help her if they marry, and FL’s priority, actually the whole reason she exists - as she said to Yan Rui - is vengeance. As this is so, marrying SML makes perfect sense for her, and she therefore chooses it actively. Otherwise she could always have been a bit more evasive to SML. She wasn’t.

SML’s mother might be in on it then - ‘repersuaded’ by the Xies, she did have doubts in her discussion with her husband. (And I don’t even criticize FL. She has always said she only exists for revenge.SML offers her that, and is nice, genuine and loves her. ML also has revenge as his priority. FL is not wrong in concluding they are on different paths now.)

Hm. I thought she genuinely saw her marriage to SML as her ticket to revenge, as ML disappointed her deeply and SML promised to help, never to take concubines and all. I still think she’ll regret it in tomorrows episodes and wants an out. But for now, I see it as her wanting to see the marriage to SML through.

She genuinely agrees to marry SML imo. Also SML’s parents are genuine now, we saw the discussion. I’m not sure why some here act like this hadn’t happened in today’s episodes. (Not an accusation, genuinely confused about how different our interpretations are).

Yeah, but in today’s episode SML begs his parents again, they have a serious discussion, and agree and send the betrothal gifts. Also, SML’s dad looks seriously surprised at the switch (preview to tomorrow). One would have to totally ignore today’s episodes to conclude SML’s parents and FL are still fine with a switch-scheme.

I know all that but I still took it as SML’s family genuinely changing their mind, and FL as well after SML vowed to seek justice for her mother. No?

Why would I care whether someone else takes the revenge I want out of my hand and kills the person I want dead?

She overheard it, from what I gather, and it may have been a logical development that she did not reject to. But I do think it was a conscious choice of the writers to not have the parents ask in any scene, cause they just didn’t.

Ok, I’m also going to watch the rest of the episodes as they come out (no express though). Even though it’s kind of torture. But mark my words: Once they’re all out and I have a little extra time I’ll binge them all.

I really enjoy it, and yeah, I’d love for it to be longer, sure. (Unless that means silly fillers.) However, what I do not miss is some structure where you get the whole story of how growing up and how the leads got to where they are now, like most dramas I know. I particularly enjoy not being told everything beforehand and figuring things out from flashbacks (that don’t last a whole episode).

In the novel, ML was *actually* corrupt. And he destroyed her betrothal with 2ML (whom she liked first, though later her feelings got muddled) by making him drunk and planting a woman in his bed, which she then stumbled upon.

But he was still a good fit, ‘cause he was nice to her and he didn’t even raise an eyebrow when FL turned a trap set against her by first Madam around and let her Second Sister be gang-raped by a couple of fake monks, instead.

What reputation does a woman have who was basically unguarded until she entered the household. That’s why I think the Xies also let her move more freely than her sisters. Also, a good relationship with ML helps them more than her reputation (which is why they didn’t even bat an eyelid when they “gifted” her to ML for the night.)

We actually don’t know whether the parents discussed it with her. As it was not shown - which could easily have been done - I have to conclude they didn’t.

Having seen some negative comment in the SOTB section, I started wondering because it felt off and came to this section. (I didn’t know the actress before but like her in SOTB).

Reading some ridiculously over the top hater-comments here I have to say: C-Drama-World is really one hell of a toxic environment. Why don’t you guys stop over identifying with some actors while bashing others and get a life, instead? I mean, your life won’t get even one jota better even if you literally destroy each single actor you hate on. Pathetic.
