That’s what I wonder. Will he step up for his family or walk away? What will he do when/if FL, not ML, becomes the direct, clear opponent of his family?

I believe it was an ancient tradition that this right was reserved for the first wife, which grandma was not - she was just a concubine. As far as I understand it, that really happened. Just as it is rooted in history that the current emperor’s father impregnated many in his harem, but the favorite concubine killed all offspring off. Only one boy was raised in secrecy up to the age of 5. The then emperor caught wind of it and was overjoyed. Grandma took in the child to protect him from the murderous concubine, who was never punished (not even by the kid who then became emperor and is the foil for this drama’s emperor). That is why the emperor is so devoted to grandma. I like that the drama weaves in history. And boy, that history is apparently wilder than any c-drama plot could possibly be.

That’s the thing. He basically hedged out the plan alone and persuaded her by dangling a love marriage prospect, where she would additionally decisively marry up, in front of her. He is the last person who should hold that decision - that he made - against her.

I was under the impression that Yake switched from narcissus to orchids, because she found them more noble - or maybe because Lady Yu said her son preferred them? But I never heard her husband say that, on the contrary. Now Yake says she always preferred narcissus but changed it for her husband. So, was this a ploy by Lady Yu, or do I misunderstand or misremember something?

I don’t quite get Yake’s remarks (EP 26).

I’m actually not sure it is just a c-drama thing. The slowest approach to a kiss I have ever seen was in the BBC drama persuasion (a Jane Austen Adaption, it is on prime, not the godaful Netflix adaption). It is otherwise a great adaption, but the super slow approach kiss (in the streets of Bath, in public, in the early 1800s, no less) was too much, and on several levels.

Particularly as she was a willing participant but not the orchestrator of FL’s “fall”. The main villains still have no care in the world and don’t suffer at all. (And no, YJX’s pining for FL does not count, at all.)

Will Ep 27 air today? I made the mistake of watching the preview at the end of Ep 26. Now I’m stressed out.

True. And he most certainly uses ML as his ruthless blade that he can disavow at any time if strategically advantageous. It is truly ironic that his insistence on recruiting ML for the army, which his advisor could only bring about by instrumentalizing FL, led to our main couple staying together with FL proposing marriage, instead of parting ways as planned…

Ep 25: So, YJX will reject mums idea of a concubine, because only being childless over forty would make such a choice morally acceptable. But back in Ganlin he had no qualms trying to steal himself another man’s woman to make her his concubine… because…?!?

One thing that became clear to me during the wedding was that they feel happiest among their Northwestern military friends. It would have been a shame to alienate them and create hardship for those communities only to give the Emperor his silver faster.

I wonder if that is what the Emperor is mad about - he officially scolds ML that the reform is slow in the preview. Or he is annoyed that the couple he bet on and publicly endorsed their marriage repeatedly was not entirely honest. FL back then only said because her family fell on hard times she needs the registry. Now, their situation has created drama even with his Grandma… Maybe he resents that.

I also read something about a ribbon in the hair, for unmarried women. One poster explained FL wearing her hair up also unmarried was ok at a certain age, but she still had that ribbon of an umarried woman. (Not sure how correct this is, but it sounded plausible regarding FLs hairstyle in the capital).

This emperor dragged ML into this whole mess, instrumentalizing FL to do it. If he now gets second thoughts he can pound sand for all I care. ML&FL should retire to the North West or emigrate to the East Indies or whatever. This court is just too toxic. Let the Emperor sort it out, really.
