I'm not western, moroccan actually and we don't have a big entertainment industry, actors and singers here don't have an agency, the most important ones have a manager and his job is SIMPLE: you bring contracts that the artist will check HIM/HERSELF and if they want it, he'll get his commission. Now if he want such freedom (and he's a free soul who has been patient for too long, I don't believe he has support from his family regarding this career because other brats have more leverage, so he's actually self-made, nothing to do with his background), he needs to enter the system and create an agency.

They wish they can have his soul but all along his career, he has always shown diligence, working hard, being humble, even keeping his head low when he received unnecessary hateful comments, he never got involved in some adulterous affair or got tax issues... and even people who aren't his fans are like "wow, what a loss". Yes, I've heard about one with Luo Yunxi where they put tons of pressure on him because they didn't want it. And I've seen people talk about a new project (but not sure, sometimes translations are wacky lol) and he managed to get through everything but the deal can't be closed because of his agency. So I really don't know, if there's time left, maybe they were pressuring him a lot so that they can be managing him for a longer time (through projects)... and therefore, make it easier for them to renew the contract. But still, I still didn't find anything about the contract, when is it going to end... if it's ending soon, good move Xu Zhengxi, you handsome smart ass! It means he's "retired", and therefore they can't pressure him anymore to reconduct a contract and he'll only have to finish whatever he ALREADY signed => no more bullshit jobs for him... and after the end of the contract, he can make a comeback. If it's the way he thought it through, giiiiiirrrrl, I love it!

What I don't get is the contract is about to finish, which means if there's no agreement, it won't be reconducted... so how can they refuse the contract termination?

You can watch the legend of the Phoenix, Novoland (part 2, where he is acting), the legend of Dugu or the autumn Ballad. There's also a modern drama that looked interesting for me, Trace, he's a forensic doc. Don't bother with Chong Zi, it was trash and they did him reaaaally, really dirty. I watched it on legal channels only to support Jeremy, other than that, I'd have stopped like you at episode 1.
