(As per the novel) He was not in a comma. While rescuing her he was pushed off a rooftop and hit his back going down, cracking his spine.
He needed a surgical repair and they implanted a piece that JX personally printed for him at her company.
They weren't 100% officially back together before this happened to him. They'd spoken prior to the attack and made a decision to meet and resolve their differences. Before that meeting could take place, the kidnapping happened and HT went to rescue her and was injured.
In the hospital, JX took very good care of him up to and after the surgery. They also ended up talking while he was there and working out their differences and officially got back together again.
