Well yea when I watched Mandate of Heaven (the one and only korean Sageuk I've seen) I got into reading about the current king of the era and the few ones after him. I really bad for them they live their life knowing they can be betrayed any moment and most don't get to age because they get killed by those around them. Thats a worse fate than being born into extreme poverty

Gou is the one with Ueno Juri. True that about historical objectivity. Historical dramas will never be objective, but they are useful because they do peak our interest in some historical figures and events, and if we wanna find out more we can do our own research. It doesn't work with korean dramas because they turn the character into the typical present day leads, and loose their charm to attract as and gain knowledge.
Even though Gunshi Kanbee is about Kuroda Kanbee, which I think Okada Junichi is going great playing the character, I'm more intrigued by Oda Nobunaga. Its not the first time I hear of him, but his presentation here is going deeper than usual. I think he's an interesting mix of tyrannical and mercy. He has great ambitions that makes him a good leader. I'm really bad at writing essay so I didn't study history but I always found it intriguing.

lool those kind of dealines make us procrastinate even more :P
As for the Taiga it feels like they want to tell us a historical event from a certain point of view in a more dramatized, romantised fashion which I always thought what historical dramas were all about. I heard that older korean dramas were also don this way, but now its more of a "losely based" type of drama, where they change the story to fit what would get more ratings, and that focus is my issue with korean dramas.
Right now I'm trying my first taiga, then I'd like to watch Yae no sakura, and if I enjoy the genre and picks my interest more then I might look into others too ;) How many taigas have you watched?

They subbed the first 7 episodes, I've been watching it whenever I'm in the mood. Its interesting and surprisingly entertaining while I feel that I'm learning more about japanese history. Thats why I decided that whenever I get the chance I'd watch Yae no Sakura cuz it seems like an interesting period ;) But yea.. that exam... I gotta start soon!!

Well if I do its not going to be anytime soon.. I've got a bunch of dramas & movies that i'd prioritize more + I got this exam that need to pass for work purposes so I'll be studying for the next 2 months hence less time for drama watching :'(
I actually want to watch a historical dorama if I get the chance :P Either the current airing one (got a bunch of actors I like) or last year's yae no sakura.

Yup agreed!! Because they will start wanting to appeal to the west more and will loose that "je ne sais quoi" that makes them so special. Kdramas know how to create good chemistry between leads thats why I keep going back to them despite all my disappointments :P But like you said once in a while they do it write and make watching worth it ;)

It was darker than expected. Episode 2 had an interesting ghost. Its using a trope we've seen dozens of time but I think the write has something different to add to it. Only think is I don't like our "female lead" there. Her presence and the way she's presented doesn't make much sense, and the performance from the actrice is boring.

I loved Kimura Shunji from Bridal Mask specially when he became evil. I think his transition to evil is well written and was well performed. Like you said a product of his time. But he was becoming evil, and was aware of how he was loosing himself and wanted to avoid that with all his might. The more the story went on the harder it became. I never saw him boring and found him very human.

I just started Alice's Thorn and Border & they're both interesting, though border surprised me more. I'm looking forward to Odagiri Joe's River’s Edge Okawabata Tanteisha to be subbed aswell ;)

I think they are willing to take a risk of not appealing to the vast public for the sake of saying what they wanna say, let the artist do his art :P Kdramas are too obsessed with ratings & always end up depending on tropes while taiwanese... I'm speechless i feel its teenagers writing most of their idol dramas. Each country has its own charm but japanese speak to me most

It does look at the mystery genre in a unique way as in the suspects are the heros not the detectives. Japan is always willing to take a risk to tell their stories. As for Ayaka a lot of times I thought her mom was showing her weakness which prompted Ayaka to take it out on her. I understood her self loathing but I do think they took it to extremes.

lol yup I did!! I gotta say once I was past the half way point of the story it got me much more interested. It really is a human drama about complicated family relationship but I think they still kept an interesting mystery throughout. The acting on part of kids was well done. Ayaka was troubling most of the time, but I couldn't help but understand her even when I felt like beating her at times. The show make it a point that things start get better in her family once the parents start communicating better. Overall it had a nice message, well executed and acted. Oh and the ending song just rocked :P

I think Ninja Assassin was a joke of a movie. Nothing to do with him but the story, and the dialogs were too cheesy. The best most badass scene of the movie the the first scene, though its no good cuz it gives false expectations. I just couldn't take that movie seriously I was laughing most of the time while watching it at the movies :P
