I think I read before that there was supposed to be a scene that he really was crying hard but it was scrapped?…
In Lighter and Princess his acting was excellent throughout. In EverNight his emotional scenes were lacking intensity of feeling, but then his was just 18, and the rest of acting was good enough. I was surprised by how flat he was in the second part of this drama. It was as if he got bored with the role, and was just going through the motions. OTOH, framing in this drama really sucks. He is a subtle actor, his facial expressions need specific focus, so imo camera was not giving him best chances. He is only 25, I can't think of many idol actors who could do a Shakespearean level tragedy convincingly.
omg , i thought i was the only one that felt like this. his acting in lighter and princess was so complex and…
I think maybe that demon role was actually difficult for him . All powerful 500 year old with no emotional range, except his enormous grudge against the world of immortals. He literally knows nothing else. I think AC maybe too young to pull it off, too young , and maybe too shy to convey terrifying, Wagnerian level, hate , of being wronged by everybody and everything , and find a way out of it to loving someone.
Idk what y’all were watching, but I’ll just chalk it up to a difference in taste. I literally didn’t know…
As I said, I know many think he was perfectly fine. But as I have ran a small theater group, auditioned actors, and put on shows, and also have done a lot of voice work, I look at acting with a sort of professional eye. And to my eye it was lacking. The popularity is not a measure of anything - a lot of very popular dramas suck big time, and many excellent dramas are not popular. .. People often like dramas because they like chemistry between leads, which is great, but it is not the same as great acting. Also I think the drama has poor framing. His facial expressions are very subtle, and the way his scenes were shot was not the best to showcase any actor.
I know people like Arthur Chen in this drama, but I just rewatched Lighter and Princess, and the difference is startling. In it he was just superb , fascinating and authentic, he made a very trite story work. But something seems to have gone wrong in this drama. He was great for the first 12-15 eps and then it all went flat, like he lost interest in his role, and was just walking through it. Miscasted? poorly directed? limited acting range? he was sick? I can't get over the difference.
I literally can't recall a drama couple that looked so connected, and delightful from the get go! No silly nonsense, no fake cute, just pure joy to watch. What a treat!
Why is it a SCANDAL? Other than MDL is a rag that likes to spread "sandals" and every piece of dirt it can find ? How do these low life become 'editors' on this board?
did I join mydramalist just so I can talk about this drama? maybe. I didnt like the female lead. the writers showed…
I agree, I think the way the role is written makes her unattractive, I found her annoying, irrational, superficial, and too full of herself. I also think FML acting doesn't compensate for the writing, personally I didn't like her at all.

Stop being so full of yourself and assume you are the world's authority on acting, you are not. I saw her in other dramas. She is fake and affectatious throughout, modern or costume.

I read what you wrote. But I also had explained twice and at length that the issue was not that she was "drawing from comedic traditions." I called her acting awful because 1. of the WAY she was drawing from them, and 2. the way she was acting the part when she was NOT drawing on anything, but doing a part of a modern day actress. I said it was a useless conversation, because you apparently think that engaging means I need to appreciate your lengthy unsolicited explanations of traditions, and start liking her acting. That is not proper exchange of opinions, and I don't find it useful or productive. Good day to you. Bye.

There is not such thing as misunderstood performance. It either works for a viewer or not. If it requires an explanation, then by definition it doesn't work. Acting is a skill set, and at this time in history it is mostly international, and works across cultures. It is not some folk art. LYN is hysterically funny, but he doesn't act like a lunatic. When she was doing scenes parodying fake cute it was funny, I am talking about the rest, which is not even remotely. Chang Long is doing more traditional comedy and he is hilarious. Her maids are doing the same style of acting but they are not grotesque. She is doing what we in the West call “chewing the scenery”. I happen to be familiar with genre, cliches, tropes, and Chinese comedic traditions, and even a bit of history of its development. and even a little bit with history of China. I really love asian drama, for the story telling, traditional beauty, the way it handles good and evil, the relationships, and many other qualities and details, but I still have my personal taste and standards. To me her acting is awful.
FML acting is driving me crazy. I saw her in other drama and she is always fake. I know it is a satire,/parody, whatever but it is overdone. All these grimaces, pouting mouth, baby talk, squeaking, squealing, wiggling shoulders, mincing steps, flailing arms, cartoon, off key reactions that are just wrong, and that is when she presumably is not even in the script but being a modern time actress. I absolutely love Liu Yu Ning, if not for him I would drop this drama, still might. She is awful. He is exceptionally good.
