Every new trailer makes me fear the worst for JCW and KYJ. The tone of the drama looks so silly the writing should better be great or this will be an industrial catastrophy for these two as their latest drama was not so good.

Protocol Additional to the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949, and relating to the Protection of Victims of International Armed Conflicts (Protocol I), 8 June 1977. Safeguard of an enemy hors de combat
You can rationalize all you want regarding the romance. Truth is what was disclosed. And what was disclosed was too few to look credible.
I guess I'm set to be disappointed with this series. No problem with the main lead but Li Yi Tong is a meh. She…
I think she is a good actress. She has more two than facial expressions and she can portray different characters like in Legend of Condor Hero, Blood Romance or Sword Dynasty. I have to say I was quite disappointed by her lastest dramas Sword Dynasty, Royal Nirvana and Blossom in Heart. She was very different from her cheerful role in Legend of the Condor Hero. She has talent but looks like she is playing more and more quiet characters. Maybe because she is aging? I suspect this role is another quiet one too. Anyway, I'll be waiting for it to release. The filming is completed since some time already. I wonder why it takes so long.
You argument about the King does not stand. Even in the case of a declared war, what the King did, in our world, it would be in breach of Article 41 of the Convention of Geneva on War. It is warcrime. Now you can imagine in his world, there is no conventions of Geneva and no Warcrimes. But even if this is the case, the bottomline is he abused his power as a human being (or is he not one) and he is a tyrant King empowered with a right he should not have. This side of him is in total contradiction with his nice side but it explains why he is not credible as a character. Too nice when he is nice, too perfect when he knows, too wicked when he is bad. Just too much.
As for the romance, I get that you and your husband are not from two different worlds but I am sure you lived enough experiences and challenges together to know your respective qualities and nature. It is good you can see how LG's and JTE's regard for each other is deep but these are only your own eyes. In the eyes of most viewers, this romance is based on nothing deep. I suggest you the article " Romance in the TKEM feels weird and forced - an analysis" on Jazminemedia. If viewers like you and me and many others are arguing if the romance is credible or not then it means the writer failed already.
We need to judge on what is presented. So I do not think he is a good king because the KOC is a Kingdom with Laws and a Parliament and a Prime Minister. He is rogue as a King. He is not able to work with his PM and he only does things the way he wants. The King does not have power of life and death upon the people. What he did in the bookstore was murder of unarmed citizens even if they are vilains they have the right to be defended in a trial. The way this King is described people cannot have sympathy for him because he has no flaws and he is extreme and unilateral in every ways. In the way he works, he commands, he decides, he alledgely "love" ... because he is a genius and perfect king. No. This is unrealistic and viewers can't have sympathy for such a King.
Same for the romance. Tae Eul and the King never shared adversities, challenges together to create bounds between their personnalities and values and view of life. To develop emotional connections which lead them to care and worry and love. She called him a nutcase in her world, she traveled to his world, they kissed, she traveled back to her world and then she suddently was missing him and ran to hug him. That's it. Any discourse on her acceptation of his qualities intelligence or nature is pure speculation. Both of them never took the time to live the experiences necessary to make sure of each opther's qualities and nature. I have the feeling you are saying "How can't see love him he is so perfect". That's a fan opinion based on the projection of a fan's own assessment of the character after what she sees. But there is a difference between what a viewer thinks of him throughout the drama and what Tae Eul learns about him in the drama.
This is what the writer led the audience to do: She portayed a so called perfect King on his white horse and the girl has to fall in Love with him. But no... the audience generally did not buy it. If you look carefully, there are too many shortcuts and contradictions. Let's think about it. If Tae Eul should learn that the King had the people of the bookstore slaughtered when they were running out unarmed, do you think she would accept that? as a person? as a cop? as a Law officer, would she accept an act which totally contradicts her own police regulation which forbids her to shoot and kill unarmed people? Which contradicts her own ambition and value in life to uphold the Law and bring Justice? The inability to present a natural, deep and consistent connexion explains why this romance looks so rushed, unrealistic and out of place.
The King can rule the affairs of the Kingdom, he can lead the navy to war, he can ride horses, he is a Maths genius, he can cook like a chef, he can deduct his uncle is hidding secrets, he can make people commit suicide, he can order the execution of unarmed people, he can slay people with his sword with no mercy when they only have batons, someone gets shot for him and he gives him a Mclaren 720S worth 300 000 USD of course he is generous, he is the only one who understands the situation between the two worlds, the time stopping, he also visited the frontier between these worlds so he will be able to travel back in time, and apparently he can also shoot bad guys like John Wick does and save himself... Truth is his character is allmighty and has no failure and this is what makes him so not endearing.
There is no complexity in his character and his romance with Tae Eul is so artificial. The guy fell in love with a picture and then chased her until her world and made her his gf and queen to be because he is the King. And she fell in love with him because he took her to ride on a white horse and saved her when she was lost and in danger. What a romance. It is not even a matter of international audience or not. It is either good or bad and most comments say the romance is bad: No emotional developments. Fast forced connection and kiss between the two. That first kiss scene after that "dialogue"... lol. OK, let's wait and see how the big finale unfolds. Maybe this drama can still save itself with the 3 last episodes.
- The King is too perfect and never challenged nor put in danger. Can't have sympathy for him as we never fear for him. - Tael Eul is a slacking cop. She is also a damzel in distress - Jo Young is an accessory. There is no development of character for him. - Eun Sub is a comic relief only. Waste of talent and character. - PM : She is divorced? and now she is exposed and evil? Because she was rejected? - Lee Lim is the vilain but he appears so rarely. He is like a caricature of vilain. - Plenty of characters who raise questions but they are not answered. The pregnant woman, the yoyo kid, Young counterpart of the king who disappeared, his mother who was abducted, the mothers of Shin Jae, the Psy of Shin Jae, Court Lady Noh, Luna... - The scar on these people. The King said they are people who killed their counterpart? He did not kill his. Why this appear when it rains? - What's with time stop? - Shin Jae is the only complex and character. The secret around him makes him more interesting than the King.
The writer tried to sell a romance which comes from nowhere with little chemistry between the 2 lovers. The moments they kissed or said "I love you" were just terribly cringeworthy. The writer tries to make the plot look complex and smart by leaving elements along the way in different worlds and at different moments of time. The viewers will supposedly be amazed by how they finally interconnect but it makes the story messy, erractic and confusing.
The big question is just: 13eps now. Was it entertaining so far? Would people rewatch these 13 eps just for the pleasure of crying, cheering and laughing again? For me the only entertaining things were Eun sub and the charge of the KOC mounted police. There are only 3 episodes left and they need to wrap this up and explain everything. Good luck to them. I will watch it to the end just because I want to know the story of Shin Jae and Luna and how it ends for them.
If people need to rewatch it to understand it it means it was badly written.
I liked that anime without the need to rewatch it ;-) I agree sometimes rewatching it will help you notice details which improve your understanding of it. Anyway, you rewatch it because you liked it at first. In the case of TKEM, it is so messy and erratic I believe people hardly try to understand it. They just want to know if it ends well or not. As for me, nice ending or bad ending I already know I will not rewatch this.
If you call Yukee Chen a bad actress then I don't know what your standard of a good actress is, probably high…
Thanks for your feedback. I guess everyone has his own opinion depending on how we enjoy the performance. True I am not convinced at all by her acting skills. But that's only my opinion and everyone is entitled to his own. I can only hope she have good career and portray a wide range of characters and I will adhere to them.
I think you're too harsh on her. She hasn't impressed me as an actress either but her acting is fine. If your…
Maybe you are right. Maybe I had too many expectations from this drama and from her and I am quite disappointed so far. I wish her to meet success with this drama anyway.
